Title: What bolts need replacing for new brake discs?
Post by: pandaman on April 28, 2018, 10:58:10 pm
I've got myself some new discs and pads, front and rear, that I'm going to fit this week. I'm just not sure which bolts/screws I should definitely be replacing. The caliper carrier bolts? are they the M14 spline/triple square bolts? and maybe the torx 30 that holds the disc to the hub? Just need confirmation, thanks in advance!

None. You can reuse them all.

might be worth having the screws that hold the discs on handy as a spare. if they come out ok then you can reuse them. but they can be quite easy to mash up

I think the bolts that hold the caliper carriers on are stretch bolts and therefore are meant to be replaced although personally I wouldn't bother as there fairly large and it would take a lot to break them.

The rear carrier bolts are M14 triple squares and are a real pig to get at and are really tight, my advice is to make sure you can loosen these first before you start removing the rear calipers because I failed and ended up taking it to a garage, might save you time dismantling it all only have to put it back together again.

Replacing the bolts that hold the discs on is a good idea as it easy to round the heads on them, I always put some copper slip on the threads of these for easier removal next time.

Front carrier bolts aren’t stretchers  :happy2:

Most people reuse all the bolts on the entire car.  The only bolts I won’t risk reusing are the engine mount and subframe bolts.  Ever since an engine dropped out of a car in Italy recently, VAG have come down hard on dealers where stretch bolts are concerned!
