Title: Test drove a MkV GTI today finally
Post by: Nickyboy on February 09, 2010, 09:07:33 pm
A 55 plate red GTI, just for testing purposes. I had just come from the Honda dealer across the road, drove a 58 Civic Tyoe R, I was like meh.

So I loved the Golf, but I havearound 16k to spend, and I want a silver/white/grey 3 door ED30. The rarest of all 3 colour/body/editions by the looks of things  :scared:

i say budget for a car for £15500, then use your change to get yourself a REVO stage 1 map, because the standard cars are just plain slow :P

I'd agree with that, certainly not slow after stage 1

Would you buy a higher miled R32 for the same monies e.g 06/39k or a 57 ED30 with 22k?
Title: Re: Test drove a MkV GTI today finally
Post by: Janner_Sy on February 09, 2010, 10:10:05 pm
no to thre R32 for me. love the interior love the look, 4wd is a bonus, but big heavy engine that is expensive to tune. in the dry i think a stage 1 GTI will be equal to if not have the legs over the R32

Congrats on driving a GTI. You have now been converted.

Hope you find the car you want.

Don't blame you for not getting the Type R mate, my brother has just had serious serious problems with his. He has taken it down to Honda 3 times saying there is something not right with the clutch etc and every time they have come back saying they cannot find anything, now he has taken it down this time and they have stripped his clutch saying it's completely destroyed and it's his fault so they won't pay out for it under warranty. The car is an 08 plate and done like 18k miles. They are trying to get him to cough up £750 for it! Apparently he isn't the only one having problems with there clutch!.

Sorry to go off track

I have had my Gti for around 5 months now and love it, It just feels so solid, my next step is to go Revo also. I don't think you would be disappointed mate.

I've stripped most of the aftermarket parts off the Civic, then off to DVLA on Monday to get the private plate off etc, so i'll have a few weeks to get my car ready and sell it before I take hold of a GTI.

Found this on Autotrader http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201006351967096/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/14000/price-to/18000/model/golf/make/volkswagen/postcode/iv125eb/page/1/keywords/30/radius/200?previous=%2Fsearch%2Fused%2Fcars%2Fvolkswagen%2Fgolf%2Fpostcode%2Fiv125eb%2Fradius%2F200%2Fkeywords%2F30%2Fprice-from%2F14000%2Fprice-to%2F18000%2Fpage%2F1%2Fsort%2Fpriceasc&logcode=p

Most 30AEs are at least 200 miles away, let alone Grey 3 door ones. Does that seem a good buy? Ideally i'd prefer a 57 with lower miles but I don't want to drive for maybe 5 hours to see a car that has unmentioned issues.

I haven't driven a 30AE yet, sounds ideal though, bit firmer and nippier than the standard GTI.

Cheers guys

Ed30's suspension is identical so no firmer than a normal gti

Wait for the right car is my advice.

I bought a 1000mile 3 month old Ed30 2 years ago (today in fact!). for just over 18K.  It was poverty spec though, wish i had waited for one with xenons/highline satnav etc.  Done something about that lot in the last 2 years..............................

Great car, and Steel Grey FTW!

In the real world the suspension is not the same. I have a black ed30 and a red GTI both std. (mine is ed30, wifes is GTI) The ed30 is noticably harsher than the GTI which I would describe as "softer" by comparison, not a problem but a harder ride. Is probably more to do with the much lower profile tyres on the ed30. Otherwise both fantastic cars and the ed30 with a stage 1 map is soooooo quick, it really is one of the best cars I have driven.

If you're looking for an edition 30, don't type in 'gti 30' on autotrader. You'll get more results if you simply put 'edition 30' :happy2:

winyra exactly dunlop's on 17" on wifes std GTI, the ed 30 is whatever brand tyre it came with on std 18", (think they are michelin) tho ride qualitywill depend on the tyres as well. I recently switched from Mitchelin Cup Sports 18" on my 993 track car to Toyo R888's and the difference is very noticeable in terms of ride quality (toyo softer ride than cups) handling the cups grip for ever never let go (but when they do, it ops hello armco), whereas the toyo's start to slide <controllably> when near limit and cost toyos' about 2/3 cost of cups and 80% of performance.

Shouldn't it have buttons on the steering wheel?

Looks like it's been spec'd without  the MFSW and paddles, what a bummer.

Although it does have DSG, should really have added the paddles and MFSW with this option.. :pomppomp:  and the nice RNS510  :star: otherwise it appears pretty basic (Sorry... :innocent:)

It should have paddles on the steering wheel as they were standard from MY06 onwards. Not a biggie but the RNS 510 is retro-fitted as if it was factory it would come with highline.

Going to look at one tomorrow, I mentioned it earlier http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1434575.htm

The owner is a mature owner that has taken care of it, and it comes with GIAC switchable remap. 305bhp FTW

2300 is the official ( less write offs).

Still a superb car whether theres "loads" in your town or not.

They are still a rarer sight then GTi's on the road as a whole.

as you say, 3 door manuals seem to be most common available.

Oh, and Im not too far away from you either mate!

I DID NOT SAY THE ED 3O IS NOT A GREAT CAR  what i said is they are far more popular than vw would have us believe , i do a fair few miles up and down the country every day and i see at least 2 a day , i for 1 dont believe a word vw customer services say (must be worst c/s around ) and then the ed 30 was allowed to be imported , i went to a certain retailer in derby once and there must have been 50 ed30 there at £19.995 THE ED30 IS A BRILLIANT CAR BUT NOT AS RARE AS VW LED US TO BELIEVE WHEN THE ORDER BOOK FIRST OPENED , which for me made the car more desirable back then than it is today

To be honest, I have NEVER seen another ED30 on the road while I have owned mine.
I have seen 1 pirelli - but not another ED30.
Im just outside of London, by the way.

Makes it pretty rare in my book.

It all depends on the area you live in.
