Title: 60,000 mile service

Evening all, I've heard and read before that at 60k I should be having the water pump and belt replaced. Can anyone confirm this as I've got my service booked with a Volkswagen specialist and been told there is no 60k milestone Service??

True...60k miles is timing belt and water pump. I do not believe the belt-tension roller, nor the accessory belt is noted, but you should do them.

Must do's...in my opinion:
Timing belt
Accessory drive belt
Water pump

Other bits you may consider doing:
Tensioner Roller
Upper & Lower Idler rollers
Camshaft seal

He's talking miles not killometers.
Timing belt and water pump should have been done at 40,000.
Spark plugs need replaced at 60,000 along with oil and filter.

Yes...yes he is. And, my service intervals in my maintenance booklet section shows the timing belt for the first time at 60,000 miles (96,000) kilometers and states "Inspect the timing belt".  :thinking:

But, of course, I replace it. They should include a number of years to do so as well because I drive it less than 5k miles/year these days and would take 12 or more years to reach 60k miles on a new belt. I assume one could assume they believe it will take 4 to 6 years to reach 60k miles and so it would be wise to replace every 5 years or 60k miles.

Could it be different there than it is here?

My dealer said 40k, or 4 years too.

You'd think they would last a bit longer these days. I only did 2500 miles last year, but it's big bucks, if it snaps, doh.....

I remember it being 40k for DSG, 60k or 4 years for Cambelt. That’s what I’ve been following anyway. Water pump is recommended because you’ve everything off and makes sense to replace.

Personally I replace all filters, oil, sparks, cam follower every year regardless of how many miles I’ve done (couple k a year normally). Little price to pay to keep her happy.

Yes, my DSG is at 40k miles as well. I heard timing belts should be swapped at 4 years and that was no problem when I put 15k+ miles/year not long ago. So yeah, I'm on the year interval rather then miles for the belt now...but it is in my manual for 60k miles. I'm only doing 2500 miles/year on it now...and I change the oil and filter twice per year. Been thinking of changing that to once/year due to the reduction of miles. My CF lasts over 15k miles these days after switching to LiquiMoly from Castrol.

I have never done a service or anything like a cam follower in my life before but i am currently getting parts ready for me to do it at the end of the month.

I am far from a mechanic but after a few hours checking how2s on the tubez i am very confidant i can get it done safely myself.

The only special tools you will need is a torque wrench and spark plug 16 socket.

I am happy to send you a message with all the how2 vids i am looking at to give me the confidence to do it myself just let me know and i will get it all together for you.


the dealers will want around 80/100 to do it depending on the thief scale they work on :evilgrin:

Oh yes i have a Forge TWINtake so dont need this one almost forgot.

Air Filter -




I hope this gives you the confidence to do it yourself.

A major service at the dealer is £356 You can do all that yourself for about £200 depending on deals. and dont forget they wouldn't be doing your cam follower so their cost would be more like £400-£450.

Here's a Cam Follower DIY for those with the Banjo bolt on the low pressure hookup;
