Title: Tailgate gas strut - force rating
Post by: els904 on May 25, 2018, 10:42:29 am
Could some kind person please have a look at their tailgate strut and tell me what the force rating is. I had mine replaced a while ago with non-OEM parts and it's very hard to close. They appear to be 550N and it would be useful to know what the original spec is.

Thanks

Peter

Thanks for this - 535 isn't much less than 550 and VW ones are £50 each! I'll just have to eat more shredded wheat!

I have the hatch pop kit. It has the 600N struts. I know it is only supposed to pop the hatch open...but when warm it opens the hatch completely. So, my thinking is "would a 600+N strut open when not warm" and "has anyone found a 600+N replacement?". I am unaware of which auto the pop kit's struts come off of...but think that an aftermarket replacement may be 600N plus given there's a 550N replacement for the oem 535N strut.

Right, mine only opens all of the way if it were sitting in the sun during the summer time.
Poppers are set correctly and I actually just replaced them due to broken internal springs. But if I could find say a 625N to 650N strut...maybe they'd open more often. I know these use a Cupra strut ball cap but do not know which struts are used. I think I can find out running a rearch for the oem part number. Closing isn't an issue as I can usually close the hatch by grabbing the inner grab with one hand and pull it downward.

I will...going to write down the oem number and search to hopefully find that one aftermarket, Fabi perhaps, makes a replacement strut with just a tad more lift.

My pn; 6Y0-827-550-C-01S is a Febi-Bilstein item no; 31652

All replacements for the above pn:, not limited to Febi, I found so far are 600N...but I will keep looking.

Specs are:
length: 440mm
stroke: 170mm
tube: 19mm
rod: 8mm

I found one for an Audi A6 pn: 4F9-827-552-D, having 650N but was 490mm length and stroke is 184mm. I will be relentless.  :drinking:
