Quick question, are all the DSG boxes the same or are the GTI version different?

There are three fundamentally different types of DSG gearbox, but to refer to the 6-speed dual wet clutch version fitted to the Mk5 Golf - there are probably more than a hundred different versions.  Gear ratios, final drive ratios, 2-wheel drive or 4, even differing software.

The DSG gave up the other weekend garage has sourced another but wanted to understand what the differences may be

The best way is to get a like for like.  That is determined by the three letter id code.
