Title: Tyre compound
Post by: Aparoon on February 11, 2010, 08:17:53 pm
I see there are soft, medium and hard... I understand that soft will be stickier but for everyday road use will hard still be beneficial, and hopefully last a little longer...  :happy2:

That's the idea mate. Every tyre has a compound rating. Typically an alrounder tyre will have a treadwear index of about 280-300

contisportcontact 3 is 280

toyo r888 is 100. The lower the softer

Hard will still be way softer and stickier than road tyres, plus we're a big old heavy sledge, so you'll race through mediums and softs in no time.

I'd go for hard.

Purely for the fact they're assymetric, so you can fully rotate them, I'd get the Kumhos.

The M3 boys love them.

....Friend Hurdy had R888's on his highly modded Ed30 on our trip to Nurburgring last Autumn. It was very wet at times and he managed extremely well. Sounded like an army lorry inside his car though - But I love all that! The only tricky times he had were keeping up with me through water at 90 mph on the road back through Europe. I had Goodyear F1 Assymetrics and they were excellent - Did a track day in the wet at Spa too.

P.S. - Kumhos sound the biz, Mike.

....I've been trying to find out via Google but no luck so far. The tyre really has had some excellent reviews. It's not a track tyre but I'm now on my second set and I've yet to have any problem whatever the surface conditions (excluding snow).

I have been using nothing but eagle f1 gsd3 and assys for years now too, im a true convert as they are great, just the R1R has now plugged a gap in the market imo  :happy2:

Post by: tony_danza on February 12, 2010, 09:23:17 am
I had some F1 assyms last time and they were an excellent tyre, they did everything well road/track/ring. They did have a tendancy to wobble the blocks when hot, but I think that could be cured, as I'll describe below.

My only criticism of them is the sidewall isn't as stiff as a PS2, so they don't feel as direct - but as a contrast, they're comfier to travel on.

I'm also an absolute convert to nitrogen inflation. My last 3 events at Oulton have been on the PS2s because of the weather, The pressure hasn't changed and they're running much cooler. On similar days before they'd be increasing by 6-7PSI and getting greasy. I think this would keep F1s cool enough to stabilise the blocks.

The treadwear rating will be on the sidewall somewhere. A PS2 is 220.

....I'll go and check my GY Assym treadwear rating after I've had a bath and breakfast (might turn into brunch!) and post what I see.

Interesting what you say about the sidewall stiffness. The sidewall stiffness of the F1 Assym is much greater than their F1 Directional - It's something I know from my discussions with Goodyear Technical when I had the problem mixing the two tyres (different axles). Is the PS2 a directional or assymetric?

Are you running a tyre temp/pressure monitor? As you may recall I'm running a TyreSure and find that on cold startup my pressures will be around 34 psi and then rise and stay around their inflated 37 norm, even on very spiritedly driven road twisties and fast sweepers too. However, I get the impression that you tend to drive near the limit on track and my style is different. Is slow in and fast out possibly kinder to tyres?

My temp fluctuations (I view Centigrade) tend to be influenced as much by the ambient weather as by my driving and only increase with extended periods of fast road driving. Unfortunately I haven't been on track yet since installing my TyreSure. Hurdy would have more info.

Title: Re: Tyre compound

Robin.

PS2s are assym. I agree on the F1's assyms being much better than their directionals, I bought the car on a part worn set of those and they were utterly terrible.

Not running a pressure/temp system, just a good old analogue guage and my hands. You can feel when a tyre is overheating both in and out of the car.

Like you on the road no matter how I'm driving, the temps and pressures will be the same as yours. There's only so much heat you can build up. Obviously ambient effects it too, but I'm more talking about the stability of CO2 - because of its water content it has greater scope for fluctuation.

Track wise, I'm often complimented on being very smooth even though I drive 10/10ths. I'm hardly a tyre screaming loon, if they're making noise, you're doing it wrong! So I don't think my style will get the tyres hotter than anyone else's.

Don't forget race grade tarmac is a hell of a lot more grippy than road stuff and you're doing 15-20 minutes a time with no respite for the tyres, so physics dictates increased temps are to be expected, you just manage them accordingly.

Im very impatient but that said if i put them on around May time I'll get the summer out of them! I think I am going to look for another but I wanna keep them for the front and get twice as long out of them, I know people are scepticle about it but for how I drive I think it'll be ideal!

I'd think so, besides a slick's carcass is was stiffer than a normal tyre anyway, so it'd not be an issue.

I'm sure VWR's demo car was running on these. I've got the copy of VW Driver somewhere, but I seem to remember them getting a lot of praise.

----------------------------------------edit:------------------

toyo t1R that are on the rear have a tread rating of 230

Wow! Vredestein @ 280 is pretty impressive. The higher the number the longer lasting, right?

I might try Vredesteins next time. I had Vredestein road race tyres when I raced bicycles. IIRC they were only about 15 mm wide and inflated to over 150 psi. Hedge will know - He used to race as well - We were in rival clubs. The point is that the rubber was excellent.

230 for the Toyo seems pretty impressive too. I'd love a tyre which I can use whatever I'm doing in my car.

of the 50 or so laps i have done at the ring i had the toyo on for the first two trips there, and thought they were ok but really were sh!te compared with the vreds which i had fitted the morning i was leaving for an outing at the ring. they had 90 mile to scrub in, and by that time they were outgripping the toyos.  i havent had much mileage out of the vreds, only about 4k but saying that they have done alot of ring time(prob 20+ laps as well as my daily abuse) and i still reckon i have another 4k in them.

ill definately be buying them again. although i do like the look of the toyo R1Rs

Well, after ringing every single trye place I could find, I spoke with Demon Tweeks who in turn spoke with Hankook, I was asked if I had purchased the tyres from camskill, to which I replied 'yesss' I was then told that the 3 I have are the only 3 ever inported into the o****ry and as such I would not be able to get a 4th...  :rolleye:

Very odd, why would camskill have ever baught 3 and not 4

Don't care too much as I only ever wanted 2 for the front and got the discount and a free one for spare...

I also bought a tyre paint pen, I painted the Hankook on the outer edge, it looks great, I really like the look, don't know if i'll do it to the 2 I am going to use thought, can see myself getting a lot of stick  :P
