Title: Time for a change? Audi or keep to VW.
Post by: cossy on February 12, 2010, 09:17:44 am
ED30 coming up to three years old, looking at either a Golf R or S3.

Cant get my head around paying that sort of money for a VW Golf when the Audi is cheaper and does the same thing?

Thinking about transferring to the Audi side.

It's got to be a decision based on which car you like best and which fits your budget.

Be warned you may find some Audi Dealerships come across as being a little rude, especially where the S3 is concerned as they don't really struggle to sell them.

Having just gone through the process of selling my S3 and ordering a new one I have spoken to many dealers.  Some will offer no discount at all and others will eventually offer some.  I have been lucky and found two dealers willing to offer well above what others have so I've made quite a saving.

I can also say that depending on what age of used car you are looking at you'll likely find it a much better buy to go for new if you have the funds.  My 2 year old 3 door is currently at the dealership for £25k!!  :stupid:

We all "might as well not have it" on hundreds of things, Bought it because I like it & enjoy it at weekends. Doesnt mean I need to be doing 20k a year to enjoy it!

Cant enjoy it going to work as its 50 limit all the way with the usual lorries everywhere, which is why i use a diesel for work & leave the golf at home. :P

audi feel more 'upmarket' and quality but Im not sure the 'actual' quality is any different VW to Audi in many repects.
More importanly finding a good dealer is worth its weight in gold.
Try R and S3 and go from there, also try DSG.
I assume security isnt an issue ?

I think you need to do a few track days to enjoy what you have more thats all  :signLOL:

Without a doubt the Audi feels more special. The quality of the interior is second to none, everything feels so solid. Apart from that there isn't a great deal. As you mentioned the handling and traction is the biggest difference which makes it much easier to live with day to day than my old ED30  :happy2:

There's only one way to decide between a S3 and an Ed30:

Long test drives in each, ideally back-to-back on exactly the same route to include various kinds of roads.

Forget how it looks on paper, follow your heart! Life's not a rehearsal.

Why does everyone always only ever consider VW or Audi, at times blindly so?! There are several other good brands out there that make really decent cars aka BMW that for some reason, people here never consider!? Very odd!

oh, im getting a new car, but its VAG without even questioning it. aside from the golf GTI/R the other VW cars are naff, the S3 is dated and dull, and the other audi cars are generally inferior to their BMW counterparts!

anyone care to enlighten me as to the reason for this? id be interested to know!

Well (take cover Neil) I went to an even darker side this morning, BMW. Delivery end of March.

I've had the edition 30 for almost 3 yrs and 51k miles. Its done (cough) a few track days (cough) 1/4 mile sprints, 30-130's and a Gti shootout @ Bruntingthorpe and I have enjoyed every minute of driving it, apart from perhaps getting my arse kicked by Ben at the Pod and the gravel rash at Donnington.

I'm going to be gutted if I have to let her go but I'm planning to try and keep it as a road legal track car,  :happy2:

just seems that VAG is what people consider and never anything else, bar NeilM apparently! just wondered what the fascination was!

Gaz, maybe i need a run out in one, coz they've never really appealed and all the write ups seem to give the same conclusion!  be interesting to find out!

std I understand where you are coming from pal, the S3 is more of a relaxed ride than the GTI, but with a few choice mods you really need that extra traction

You have a nice choice between the 2 cars... but as you already have a 'normal' car (by the sounds of things) and you are only going to drive the new one as a 2nd car, at the weekends, in the dry.... why not gets something a bit more special ?  An Exige or Caterham for example ?

each to their own... but interested in your thoughts !!

Cheers

Just worked out, if you factor the depreciation of your car since new, and the mileage you have done, you have paid approx £3 for every mile driven, then add in Tax and petrol, and you may as well get a taxi to take you places.

Boring Money Wasters those BMW's.

Strat, like you say with the GTI and R the only decent BMW's are the M3 and the M5. My mate has had several of them, but even he says the dealers are as bad as Audi/VW et al!

Until the RS3 comes out there isn't really anything I fancy....in the same class of car as the ED30.

I'll most likely have changed too before the end of the year and I still get drawn by the lure of the GT-R :chicken:

Perhaps that used to be the case, but I think you'll find that they are on par with Audi etc now in terms of standard specification.

A lot of people are very loyal to their car brands. There are millions of people who will always stick with BMW and not consider anything else, likewise with Audi/VAG.

Your quote above suggests to me that you've immediately discounted BMW without even doing some basic research and even giving them the light of day! .....which, of course, is entirely up to you, i just find it a shame that's all. My father for example was always loyal to Jaguar...i love Jaguar blah blah blah. It took me the best part of 5 years to even convince him to just look at the alternatives. BMW was one of them. Now he has  BMW and can't believe that he spent all those years in Jags. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting VAG on par with Jag because they are completely different manufacturers with different brand values and target audiences, and also I'm not suggesting that you are so brand loyal as that, but it was just an example.

Let us know what you decide on  :happy2:

regardless of the miles covered it can also be about the time owned, i have a mate who rarely uses his car (has a company car) but changes every 2-3 years, a case of some new metal to play/clean

if it were me, i'm not so sure i'd be looking at the golf or the audi, with the miles you do i think my money would be thrown at something a little more unique to own.. second hand and carefully bought you could sit down happily into a TVR, Porsche, Ferrari, Aston etc  :innocent:

I've been in more than a few of these and every one smelt like a glue factory/urinal
The sound is great, but the drive isn't. plus the fact that in the 18 months that my mate owned his Cerbera. only 14 of those were when he actually HAD it and it wasn't being repaired

my old ed30 only did 8 k miles was a 56 reg i enjoyed every minute of owning it in the 2 years i had it i only lost £2k (excluding what i spent on mods ) when i traded it in for the S3 , the S3 is a great car but you need to get used to it to fully appreciate it mine gets better the more miles i do , ive not driven a golf R yet but have been a passenger and it feels exactly the same as an S3 (which is what it is ) imo the S3 is a great car to follow an ed30 because all the mods you want for your ed30 , intercooler , brakes , traction etc come as standard

oh, im getting a new car, but its VAG without even questioning it. aside from the golf GTI/R the other VW cars are naff, the S3 is dated and dull, and the other audi cars are generally inferior to their BMW counterparts!

anyone care to enlighten me as to the reason for this? id be interested to know!

agreed, ed30 to s3 is hardly "change", and going from a ed30 with 5k on the clock to a S3 just screams changing for the sake of it.  :stupid:

TBH mate seeing as you hardly do any mileage and you say its a weekend toy, why not get a propper weekend car instead of these hopped up shopping trolleys?

It all depends on circumstances as to what your weekend toy can be.
I bought my GTI new in May 2006. It's just turned 7,000 miles and only comes out (some) dry weekends as I have a company car for a daily driver. I enjoy driving the GTI at weekends and also enjoy detailing it. The thing is, I have a wife and 2 girls (4 & 7 year olds so have to have a car which has a bit of boot space for days out as well as a proper back seat for child seats. 3 doors is fine though. My father in law is in a similar situation and drives an ed30. He has a boat and needs boot space for carrying stuff.

For myself, I would like to have some sort of Porsche but I need some practicality. I have to agree that for £20k to £30k, VW and Audi have some interesting options (Rocco, S3, gti & Golf R, TT).
You need to spend a lot more money to get a decent BMW in my opinion and then you still have 'another BMW'. My company car is a 3 series albeit a poverty spec one. It's a good mile muncher but will never put a smile on my face like the GTI  :happy2:

Nowt wrong with changing a car you hardly use. I would do the same if I could afford it and it would be either a Scirocco R, S3 or R Golf  :happy2:

If you are talking Turbo or GT3RS then yes I'd agree.

The others aren't beefy enough for my liking :P

Carrera S would suit me, and that's penty raw and fast enough for my liking. Plus a nice bit of sideways action to boot. Just no comparrision with a VAG, unless we're talking R8, but I'd still have the Porsche.

If I were to buy a weekend car, it would not be a hothatch. It would be something like a porsche/Tvr etc. Second hand, low mileage and very, very fast.

Out of the S3 and the golf R, id pick the Golf R. I think the looks and the fact it has just been released warrants the exra £££££

like everone has mentioned that certainly wouldnt be my choice for a second car, Ive came from an E46 M3 to the GTI as i thought it was pointless having two cars, a weekend one, and the daily clio run about, especially as i didnt have a garage to keep the m3 in so i was all snug and warm, i felt bad about it lying out side and not getting used for weeks at a time. so i decided that i should just run one car until ive got a garage. The M3 Couldnt be an only car for me as i need a hatchback for transporting my dog and mountain bike so When i changed to the golf, honestly i couldnt of asked for a better car its perfect. I have already started saving for my next car which is going to be a second car along with the GTI that is after ive got my garage Roll on the 997 carrera s or the new generation Turbo M3 !! thats the sort of cars id go for if i was you mate, but its your money and you should spend it as you please, if you like the your golfs then the golf R is what id go for  :happy2:

As Oli said earlier, it's not just about which car has the best performance but more a case of which has the desired performance AND which suits your particular lifestyle. What it costs is simply down to what you either can afford or want to spend - Constantly chasing value-for-money will never buy you happiness regarding cars.

What's great about our GTI's and similar hatchbacks is how practical they are on an everyday basis as well as delivering respectable performance.

The rest is what you fancy, what excites you.

Good scalp by the way, but surely you should be looking for turbo's, and not a humble Carerra

Looked at several cars the weekend, well ones I could!! (No Golf R about)

Just a quick question the vw scirocco r, does it use the same engine as the ED30?

Getting around the £15k mark for a trade in on my car, is this realistic?

Cheers

I don't think 15k is realistic! Audi offered me 13k for mine, 07 with 55k miles...

Yeah the Rocco' R shares the same engine as the ED30  :pomppomp:

£15k sounds a little low to me, you may be better of selling it privately  :happy2:

15k def sounds low tbh for your car which is very low mileage one owner.
on pistonheads I suspect people will bite your hand off for it  :happy2:

I'd love an exige but they're not the most practical cars and a bugger to get in and out.

Depends what your using this weekend car for? Pure driving pleasure, local runs to the shop, outings?

I understand why people stick with VAG as the range of cars are all good looking. Don't rate the 1 series, yes it may be fast but I think its one ugly car.

I'm really coming round the the facelift S3 and that would be my choice. Wish I had the cash to buy your ED30, I'd personally be after around £17k for it.

If I had the choice of either two it would be the S3. I'm sure the R is a cracking car but no way I would spent that much. Just doesn't seem special enough to me.

Saying that bought brand new before and would never do it again as I lost far too much money!

It'd be a porker for me all the way...£34k for the R! They are avin' a tin baff. :stupid:

I am sure it drives way more special than it looks.   :rolleye:

£15k seems very cheap, considering the condition/mileage of your car. If that was from a vw dealer, they'll have that up for £19k ish a few days later.
