Title: Worth Repairing my GTI?
Post by: waqasr on September 18, 2018, 12:17:18 am
So this just happened at 4am. From what I can tell i need a new quarter panel, rear bumper and rear axle as the wheel is closer to the front of the arch, rear light, that at the very least. Other driver admits liability so no issues there.

The car is an AXX with almost 160k on the clock. Mechanically its very well maintained, wants for nothing, all polybushed, AP coilovers, anti lift kit, rtech custom map. Drives, well drove perfectly, pulled like a train.

The main cost I can see is cutting out the rear panel and welding in the new one and painting the side. I can paint the rear bumper and r32 trim piece so save abit there.

What would you guys do in this situation?

It depends how comfortable you are about having it repaired, personally if it were me, I would move on to the next car.

This is gutting. The rest of the car looks clean AF, can tell you’ve looked after her.

Yea i just had the wheels diamond cut again with extra clear coat on them and then gtechniq C5'd them too, Uniroyal RS3s, rears were abit low tbh but yea the car was very clean especially for the mileage, ive just finished painting an Ed30 front splitter and its sitting in my bedroom :sad1:. So the insurance approved bodyshop has picked it up and taken it away and I didnt know the rear was a control arm setup so im sure I could just change the nearside and sort out the wonky wheel so thats better than expected. If this engine can last me till 200k miles and I can fix the car for £1500-2k, that'l do me ok.

The real issue is the rear quarter. Anyone have any recommendations for bodyshops in East London? Thanks

Before the damage.

Nice looking car, wheels look great, does your insurance know about the modifications? If they dont you could be in sh*t.

Reckon it's had it. Any insurance company will write that off. If you have the means to buy it back & repair, then it could be worth it if you are happy with the CAT rating. Depends if you have the time & space - I certainly didn't on my mkiv, but I should have bought it back if I had space...

I’m currently fixing a 06 GTI which I brought salvage as a cat s. Mine is a frontal though and all panels are bolt on.

I’m not a expert, but whilst I was looking for my project, I had my eye on a rs5 with similar damage to yours. My mate who used to own a body shop, said its possible, different places will either pull it out or cut and replace. The labour cost is high as most of the interior needs to be removed to be able to do the welding, etc.

If it was my car, I would do, but as said, you need the space/time.

Same thing happnened to my GTI, even had new tyres. Driver was at fault but didn’t admit liability initially. Eventually car was written off..

That is a definite write off  but could you have the option of buying back the salvage value and putting it back on the road if you just cant bear to part with it. So, if its worth say £4000.00 and the salvage value is £400.00 you could still get a cheque for £3600.00, less xs and keep the car too.

Yep its been written off, they've offered 2800 and buy back for 2400. Its low due to the mileage they said. Im thinking buy it back and get another one, swap over all the good stuff like coilovers, induction, bi xenons etc.

Edit: Buy back for £400 not 2400.

Yeah that's what I'd do, shame as you've obviously looked after it.

Huh, 2800 sounds quite low, and 2400 to buy back seems too high, 400 difference to get repaired - sounds like an opening offer to me.....

I agree. Offering 2800nand wanting 2400 to buy it back is rediculus.
I rolled my old Defender years ago on  an oil spill. Got a payout of 15k...bought it back for 2. Swapped everything onto a new one I picked up for 3k and has 10k in my pocket :)

I'd expect to have it bought back for max 800 quid really if they're only offering less than 3k for the write off.

Granted, the bits on it are worth more than 800 but the insurance company don't know or probably don't care about that.

I was in a similar position. My 05 Gti got written off last year, Cat D. Insurance offered £4k after some haggling and £400 to buy back.

Was left with £3600 + my Gti which I sold for £1700.

Spent £4K on a new Gti and was left with £1300.

I agree with everyone £2400 is way too much to it buy back. Demand a lesser amount if it’s written off as a Cat S.

Sorry folks thats a typo, buy back for £400, not 2400 lol. So yea just on the hunt for one now, will 2400 in my pocket im still going to be out of pocket when it comes to  buying one.

Also think that seems low and its a first offer so push for another if you are unable to buy similar - saying that looking at Mk5's they are not exactly dear to buy today...
I got more for my high miler 07 plate motorbike which was written off last year - £400 buy back, £3600 offer - so I bought it back and did the repairs myself out of the 3200 quid change, only needed a new front shock and a front fender.
Problem is that they price the repairs on bikes at the main dealers and want to repair every single scratch caused (there was a single scuff on the passenger footpeg - that equalled a complete rear subframe in their eyes as its part of the frame) - the parts alone from BMW before labour rendered it a write off.
The whole claim cost them considerably more though, they "lost" my claim somehow and I ended up with a hire bike at £170 a day for 3 solid months over the summer while they sorted out the cheque - think that cost them over £10k in hire charges, the hired MT10 I had would have only cost them about that to buy for me instead LOL.
