Hi, had an on gojng issue with loss of power turbo not kicking in etc. Anyway I bought vag scanner and it showed up a fault. It was a 01089 code and apparently it's related to the charcoal canister / purge valve.
I rang the vw dealer Mansfield for prices as they seem straight forward to fit. He gave a price of £88 for the canister, £35 for the breather pipe - wtf!!!! and said he couldn't find the purge valve. He asked a mechanic passing by who said it is part of the canister and not a separate part!!!! Err no, it is a separate part you numpty.
My question is where can I buy these parts other than the stealers? Could these things be the power loss issues? Noticed some on eBay from Hong Kong lol.

have you ever tried buying from a TPS? I hear some stick firmtly to the no selling to public rule, but my local one has never had issue with me phoning orders through for collection.
This code can also be caused by the purge valve (N80) i think. This is a bit of a rip i believe (~£35) but Bosch non-vw branded ones aren't too pricey.
Might be useful:

I got a new bosch n75 for £23 from ebay. It tens minutes max to fit. You can get a creation motorsports silicone pipe for £25 which may prove durable than the OE one.
I use TPS in Manchester all the time and they know I'm not trade.
Have you tried clearing the code and seeing it goes and stays away?

I have phoned TPS and they can do the canister, pipe and purge valve for £130.
Maybe I should clear the codes first before spending that? But it have power loss too?

Is the n75 the purge valve? Is there a you tube vid on how to fit lol

Just take the engine cover off, if you have one, and you can see the valve about six inches behind the crash bar right in the middle of the car. Cut the hose clamps off, pull hoses off, fit new value and either crimp on new hose clamps or tighten jubilee clips.

The evap purge valve is the N80
-
N75 is boost pressure control nothing to do with evap system!
N80 is the purge valve. (N115 mentioned in previous post incorrect - ill edit!)
-
Ignore it.. mine had both canister and purge n80.fault code. I replaced both of them and cleared the code with my Vag-com and guess what, the fault code came back. Didn't notice any difference in performance at all.
-
Hmmmm I did wonder. But what can you do....... I want the car as it should be. It has no other codes and I'm out of ideas why it is not right?

Charcoal canister is about the right price from the dealer. Takes a couple of minutes to fit, that's all. I gave up on mine recently and swapped it. the light would come on once every few tanks, then, after a few clear runs go away again. Swapped it out and lights out and stayed out. No performance advantage but nice to have eliminated the problem.
Appreciate the issue is moving on but just adding in case anyone really is looking at the charcoal canister as a problem.

Its could be as simple as a blockage in one of the little pipes. You can test and rule out the charcoal cannister before buying a new one.
Hell, you can do what I've done and just vent to atmosphere, if you do it a certain way you get no EML and runs perfectly

Can you enlighten us how?

Well had the Charcoal canister and pipe changed at Sunset Derby £158. It's made no difference. He said it pulls strongly so maybe it's just me? I think us Gti ers are more in tune with our cars though as a lot of VW specialists are just used to seeing non gti models day in , day out? I liken it to medical stuff. You know your own body best and know when something is not right even though they are telling you it is fine lol. Well I cant afford anymore money on this issue so calling it a day and just accepting it. Going to have it remapped at some point so maybe that might sort it?
Cheers

did you have the N80 Evap Purge Valve changed too or not?
-
The charcoal filter can be bypassed by basically, bypassing it. Allow the tank vent from the bulkhead to breath to atmosphere - run a pipe to vent it in the inner wing, and leave the pipe running to the N80 open so that it can still take in air. It's a very simple system that can be tested before shelling out hundreds of pounds on parts you don't need
-
That's just drawing air in from atmosphere - i.e. a big air leak. The evap circuit is a sealed system and the fuel vapours are accounted for in the tune.
And if MOT testers can smell the make shift tank vent dangling in the wing, instant fail.

I didn't fit the evP purge valve as he said he could hear it clicking on and off. I asked him to check the dv that I had fitted last year. He said he has never heard of a diverted valve and it doesn't have one :surprised:
Eventually he said they called it something else when I explained what it was. Somebody recommended Sunset Derby on here. I am sure they are good but I want a garage who knows the mk5 5 gti like the back of their hand etc. I was hoping for a little more suggestions of what it could be. I could have changed the canister my self. He didn't fill me with confidence while he was talking to me. I felt I had a better understanding from knowledge off here and personal experience. I thought Midlands VW were better who changed my tensioner a while back. Just my opinion
He tried taking the oil cap off and pulling the dipstick out while the engine was running. He said it shouldn't have a lot of resistance and when it did, he said that wasn't right but didn't say what was wrong? I always thought that it was a good sign that the engine laboured when you opened the oil cap or dipstick? Have I got this wrong? I'm confused?
I am still looking for someone near me to drive it and tell me I'm not going mad lol

Its not a big leak - it's a tiny intake of air that is regulated by the N80 valve, just not rich with petrol fumes as it would be if it were from the tank. Doesn't mess up fuel trims and the car will run perfectly
A whiff of petrol without locating a leak is not grounds to fail it
-
Well, it kind of is, hence the "incorrect flow" fault code. It's sensitive enough to know there is too much air. It's common sense. 2 pipes open to atmosphere isn't exactly a sealed circuit. Any issues with the evap circuit and you don't get any adaptations, so I don't believe it will 'run perfectly' when doing that all.
-
The incorrect flow fault code is caused when there's no flow.... not too much. It's only too much if the N80 valve has failed open.... If the N80 is working correctly, you get adaptions and it has no effect on fuel trims. I've run mine like it for 3 years or so and my fuel trims sit inside 1% for both on generic Revo software
