Pretty much going to depend on the tuning and quality of build and the condition on the MK5 w/K04.
But they should be near equal or 50:50 on wins.

Depends if you put the hammer down in 2nd gear at 20mph, or 4th gear at 40mph.  Any situation that causes the MK5 to wheel spin hands the 7R an immediate advantage.

On the motorway there isn't a lot in it.  At those speeds, you need shed loads more power than your rival to pull away convincingly.  Creeping away gradually doesn't constitute an arse handing in my book.  Weight, gearing and wind resistance can affect that.  What I class as a win is when the leader pulls several car lengths very quickly and the gap keeps growing.   For that, you need +150hp at least.

You dare to contradict the "DOM"?

Then there's those times when I pull on a 5.0 Mustang, Camaro SS, or SRT Dodge, Evo X, STI, BMW, Merc, and others. Most of these guys let off immediately when they know they're beat and I should give them a tie or feel we were even? No way...if they'd stayed with it...there would've been more lengths to count but they'd quit. It's not an A$$ whipping at that point, but still a win when you are still extending the gap when they quit.

I have driven both but hands down prefer the Mk 5 as pudding says if mk5 wheel spins that’s it 🤭

Oh and if you boys comment that I am female and have no idea how to drive I might just have to say a type r is a bit on the sluggish side 😊😘

ESP if you know what’s sat on my drive 😂

Mk7 R with APR badge and loud crackly exhaust in front of me today. It pulled, but not ridiculously. And I'm only on a baby k03 with a couple of tweaks. Although on wet roads that thing would have left me standing. Yep, still happy with my old mk5, still don't covet the mk7 R all that much.

That's what I was saying about needing a bucket load more power than your opponent to pull a meaningful gap.   In the hot hatch arena, tuned MK5s can hold their own against the bigger players for sure, because the P2W ratios are so similar.

To avoid humiliation, I would recommend people do not attempt to race a Tesla Model S P100D   I followed one onto a 1/4 mile slip road last year.  It was already merging onto the DC as I exited the roundabout and slotted in 3rd gear   It was literally like one of the bikes from Tron, sans the light trail.

Gearchanges will be the major downfall I think but will have flat shifting mapped in

Grip is not so much an issue as it’s an s3

Ah well if it's an S3, it's a moot point.   Tuned S3 vs 7R, very evenly matched in rolling starts.  As you say, DSG will have a slight advantage.
