Hi Folks, got a 2005 GTi, seriously looking into getting the above fitted and have spotted a company on the web called 'Hazzy Dayz Ltd', they apparently can come to me, very handy as i live in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Has anybody had any dealings with these guys? Thus far, i think them to be very good and extremely helpful on the phone. Now, they offer 2 types, NEW and REFURBISHED, the latter being £995 and comes with 2 year warranty, the former, £1250 and 3 year warranty. I am very tempted with the latter, does anyone see any negatives to this?? Also, what's this i hear about it not being able to read full UK post-codes plse? Is this a real con to the system, or does this not make much difference?
Many thanks in advance
Andrew

Hi andrew,
That is very expensive compared to what you can get them for. When you say aftermarket RNS 510 do you mean copy of the RNS or a genuine VW one?
You can get them used for around the £450-£500 mark and fitting is really easy to do yourself with minimal experience. The only thing you will not get is a warranty but I have had mine in for a while no problems as have many others.
I would personally get a spotless used one and fit it yourself. (Tutorials are available to show you what to do.)
Postcodes is not a problem for me as I have the street name and number then it will get you to the exact place anyway.

I would not pay over £600 for any RNS these days, and as above mega easy to fit too
-
thanks for answering folks....
As far as i know, i mean a genuine VW rns 510, just that its refurbished; i have asked them what that means and apparently it's just units that have been returned to the factory for some fault, then fixed and sold on to people like Hazzy Dayz Ltd. I would love to pay £500 or so less, but fear stops me. As it stands i have 3 options:-
1) Get VW to do it, but that will cost in region of £1800 or so, and they are not specialist audio fitters..
2) Get some after-market company to fit said RNS 510 and paid c.£1000, and still get warranty...
3) Buy from likes of e-bay, take possession, not have a bl**dy clue how to fit it, and i mean that believe me, have no warranty, and if ask VW to fit it for me, have it confiscated if said unit fell off back of lorry....
Thus, i am really tempted by Hazzy Dayz, yes i would be paying a fair bit more, but still considerably less than what VW would charge me, and i would have peace of mind that its fitted correctly...
If i had your confidence and know-how, id probably buy off e-bay but i am a nobody when it comes to techical
Am i being really skilly here??

PS make sure you get the correct firmware as some cause battery drain on older GTI's
Welcome to the forum by the way :happy2:

Honestly, fitting is not difficult. I managed to do it. Means anyone can do it!
-
Thanx DPG, i have e-mailed Darren so will wait to see what he says!? I guess its just the fear of losing money if you know what i mean!? Id rather pay more and get it dont correctly than pay less and have to then pay to get it fixed....
On a slightly different theme, is the sound quality much better than the standard stereo you get from new, ie. the crappy one thats factory fitted (I have a 2005 GTi)
Andrew
-
Yep Im sure a monkey could be trained to do the fitting! :happy2:
-
and what about that cam upgrade or whatver its called, the last thing i want is for the battery to drain....!? :scared:

If im honest I didnt really notice that much of a difference. But I had jus connected an amp and sub on my RCD310 so this may be why. :happy2:

You mean the can bus. This is not necessary any more. (If you buy of Darren as it will have the latest firmware which removed the issue)
If you have the firmware which caused the issue you would have to upgrade it or replace the can bus with a later one.
:happy2:

cheers, do you know any real benefit of getting this upgrade anyway, heard somebody say that it's got speed-limits on it, and for my 2005 model, i would need it if i then wanted to do anything else with the sat-nav, eg. reverse-parking cameras, etc? I am in such a qandry, i am still inclined to go with this company, even though i know id be paying more.....i must be :stupid:
-
Just another positive recommndation for Darren - Chief RNS510 supplier of this Parish....

The RNS is an awesome upgrade. Its got loads of things on it DVD, Sd etc etc. Yes you can have speed-cameras as well as other poi's such as shell petrol station and loads more.
Yes you can hook up a rear view camera (PM SteveP on here if you are interested).
If im honest I think you would have to be a little crazy to go with that company! :signLOL:
You would be paying them £800+ to fit it which will take 15 mins! (Obviously it is brandnew but you will not notice any difference with a used one)

point taken, and i shall see what darren comes back to me with. Plse note that the £995 is actually for a refurbished one, its £1250 for a new one, but 2 and 3 years warrranty respectfully. Say i get it from Darren, it goes wrong, what comeback do i have, all due respect to Darren of course. I assume that you are suggesting this can upgrade is worth it then, if i want to add things later on?

Lots of people have bought of Darren including myself and have never had any problems. Obviously not guaranteed but it is a risk you have to take.
The can gateway does not need to be upgraded if you have the latest FW. (it removed the battery drain issue). I am unsure if the Can needs to be updated for the RVC. As I said SteveP is your man for that.
If you do not feel confident at all im sure Darren will fit it for you (think the cost is in his thread but isnt much).
Ultimately it is down to which you want to do.
Hope this helps

cheers Ollie, can i assume therefore that Darren's units are also refurbished?? Do you get a manual with it? (in English, lol??)

Welcome to the forum :happy2:
Can I also suggest that if fitting is a real concern (and by the sounds of it, it is), why not put the feelers out on here for someone local to come and fit it for you (for a nominal fee)....
This is one of THE most helpful forums out on the interweb  No doubt, somebody will gladly help (although it REALLY is very easy to do - a simple swap. The hardest bit being getting the trim off, about a 10 min task if done carefully)
Save yourself £4-500. Put it to one side so that IF something goes wrong (unlikely), you can pay to have it serviced.
HTH

If you buy one and it goes wrong, for the price you could buy another one and it would still be cheaper than hazzy days. And you could probably sell the faulty one.

And another (my brother is very happy with his version C that Darren fitted last week)

Thanks to everyone who has replied, been a great help. To throw another spanner in the works, i have spoken to a company in Bradford called 'Oemretrofits', and they can do all in for £600, so more like it, and that has 3 mth warranty also, not to mention speed-camera database, so very interesting....any of you guys heard of this company??
I have yet to go home, so there might be an e-mail from Darren waiting for me!? Reference the firmware, i think they said B, i have a 2005 Golf GTi, and apparently latest V6 maps 2010....does anyone know if you still cannot enter 7 digit UK post-codes??
Regards
Andrew

I have V6 mapping, and still no full postcode functionality!
:sad1: :booty: :angry015:

ditto! :sad1: :sad1:

cheers, is this price more like it then?? By the way, is the sound quality much better than the bog-standard factory-fitted radio/cd player??

Talk to Darren before you go to them.
