Driver's side damper has given up, and need a replacement (tailgate tried to close on my head - and the lock bit is bl**dy sharp!).... Neither VW parts, or TPS have called me back, so I'm thinking e bay - can see a pair for about £14, but is this too cheap and nasty? Any suggestions appreciated, please...
Cheers

you could try Euro car parts?

These should fit yours - just double check with the reg checker. Normally cost £21.99 but use discount Code "love51" and brings it down to £15.17
Hope this helps.

I bought some Magnetti Marelli branded ones for my MK4, £20 odd for the pair. Didn't have any problems with them. Easy to fit, so even if they don't last it's cheap and easy enough to re-do. Better than over £100!

I bought some from these guys for my Citroen C4. Very good and they even knew the difference between tailgate with or without spoiler.

I've also bought a low entry jack from them and was impressed with the quality of that as well.

Those ones rust and wear out a lot quicker than the oem ones.

UPDATE>>>>>
Thanks for all of the comments.
I took a chance on the ebay ones - £14 for a pair - it's not like it's a structural part. Comparing the replacement with the OEM, when I opened the box, I thought 'these don't look the same at all', with a much slimmer damping tube, so I just replaced the one that had failed, and crikey, the tailgate virtually opens itself, ha ha. It's early days, so we'll have to see how it goes. It does look a bit strange with one very slim, against the chunkier VW original on the other side, but who the heck looks at that when opening up the boot - and I've got the other one to put on if it bothers me that much. Been on a couple of days now, and I'm a bit nervous when getting stuff in / out of the boot, in case the tailgate crashes down on my head, but that's probably a bit paranoid, ha ha
Very easy to install too - a doddle. These were from Struts Depot - see how it goes.....
