Title: Oil pump ??
Post by: Dave Y on March 17, 2019, 05:16:12 pm
Is it a weak link ?
How many miles are they good for?
Are they expensive?
Is it major surgery to fit ?

New you're looking at about £1300 I believe from the quote I got from my garage. Mine failed and ultimately caused an engine failure. But I'm not lucky with cars :D

Was advised by a mechanic, who did some work on my car to get oil pump done as it was high milage, they do fail but when is the game of Russian roulette
Mine was done two weeks ago at 120,000 miles on bkd engine
New fai pump cost me £76.  Had to get tube of sump gasket seal too
Mechanic didn't charge me any extra, as was swapping head and gasket to revision C, my old head B was porus.   Was a long day.  It's a relief to know it's brand new.

The oil pump and balance shaft assembly are one unit, hence the price.

'The internet' says it's a common failure (as it always does about everything) but there isn't enough hard, unequivocal data to back it up.

The only acknowledgement from VW was a recall on VERY VERY early EA113 engines because the balance shaft sprocket liked to fall off.  I think they changed the nut/washer on it or something.

The only community speculation on it is servicing regime (oil change frequency, oil quality, oil level) and tuners extending the rev limit past 7500rpm, which over spins the balance shaft.  I think the shafts just run in plain line bores like the cams, so any excessive heat won't be welcomed.

Take from that what you will, but there's no point replacing a £1000 part just because it might break.
