Title: Edition 30 wheel alignment
Post by: Stig_gti on April 05, 2019, 10:37:37 am
I’ve just picked up another golf gti it’s an edition 30 and when purchased I noticed the inner rear tyre are worn.
Got my misses to go Kwik Fit to day for an alignment, these are the results

I don’t no anything about wheel alignment but looking at the results would you say this was the cause. Thanks

Your rear camber is on the higher end of the range which could be part of the reason. Are the inners worn on both sides?

The 'current measurements' is a typical sheet from a MK5.   0.5° degree camber on one side, 1° on the other at the front....and pretty uniform across the axle at the back.  Certainly from the current measurements, there should be no uneven rear tyre wear.

Both rear tyres are a lot more worn on the inner side then the rest of the tyre.
I just don’t want to put new tyres on and they start wearing uneven again.

That's because of the toe being off spec on the "Before measurements".   If Kwik fit have adjusted it to the "Current measurements", you should be fine with a new set.

No worries.  You had 13% and 16% more toe out than spec.  No wonder your tyres got chewed up.  All is well now  :happy2:

I doubt it had ever been done, it was one ladie owner from new full Vw service history. Plus I don’t have a clue about alignment, I just look to see if it’s all gone green lol.

what are the ideal measurments or is it best to stay standard ?

There many permutations of ‘ideal’ settings for different situations / tastes, so you will need to have a think what you want to achieve and what you want to use the car for.

Essentially the stock settings cover quite a broad range and only toe & rear camber can be adjusted, so starting in the middle of the ranges would be sensible.  Reducing toe in and rear camber will help turn in / reduce understeer.

my nearside rear tyre is wearing on the inside so i presumed it needs an alignment doing. I thought there might be an optimum setting.

Apologies for not reading the full thread so this may have been covered already -
My touran (said set up) suffered bad with rear innner tyre wear! Eventually after a couple of sets of tyres over the space of a year I got off my butt and got it sorted. The bushes I changed was the inner side of the control arm and some bushes at the very top can’t remember there name but some control bush.
The main issue here is ... the inner bushes wear and thus pull the camber out through weight and then also throws the toe out. The toe adjustment bolt seizes to the bush and you can’t adjust it properly because the bushes are worn too. So cut the bolts out get the black power flex bushes, new eccentric bolts and washers and have a 4 wheel alignment done. I went through all of this.
