Title: Do I Need To Re-Programme After Fitting Xenons?!?
Post by: Jono76 on February 19, 2010, 09:41:24 pm
I've managed to get my hands on an immaculate set of OEM xenons and will be fitting them once me Kufatec wiring adapter arrives.

My question is that i'm sure i've read somewhere that I will need to re-programme the car once they're fitted, is that true??

Also can the lights be fitted and the car used for a few days before i get it re-progammed if required??

Cheers for the help  :happy2: :happy2:

Think you may just need to do a quick recode using VCDS mate, you need to enable the 'xenon equipped' tick box although iirc there is something to do with having the 'with or without shutter' option depending on whether you have run the wire to the central convenience module to enable the xenon high beam or not

Now i'm REALLY confused  :ashamed:

Xenon high beam sounds interesting but what exactly is involved, i'm getting the normal Kufatec adapter but i have a horrible suspicion there's more involved?!?!?

as said above you need to run a wire from each xenon to the CM to enable xenon high beam, otherwise you'll ust have the H7 highbeams active  :happy2:

My understanding (limited lol) of the xenon retro fit is that using the adapters alone will allow the xenon dipped beam to work 100% as normal and will also allow the standard halogen high beam to work too, but...
In order to activate the functionality of the xenon high beam to come on alongside the halogen one you need to run an extra wire to the CCM, depending on whether or not you run this wire determines whether or not to activate the 'with/without shutter' option in VCDS,
The above is due to the MK5 having 'Bi-xenons' as standard which activates a mirrored shutter within the dipped projector beam to give a xenon high beam, the system should work 100% fine without this feature though iirc

Doh Too late........................... cheers Beddie.

Jono,

The Xenon light includes a shutter across the xenon bulb.  There are 2 scenarios with this.

1.  If you don't run the wires to the Con Module, then the shutters will not be active, by active i mean they will not have any power running to them.  The shutter moves when main beam is selected and you get a Xenon main beam.

2.  if you don't run the wires, the shutter will be inactive and all you will have is the Xenon dipped beam, and when you switch mains on, the shutter will not move and the halogen will be the only main beam, with a dipped xenon back up.

Coding, if you have not run the wires to the con module, then code them as xenons without shutters fitted, and you will not get any fault codes, if you have run the wires, then code xenons with shutters fitted.

Cheers for that, at least I understand now :ashamed:

How easy is it to run the wire and whereabouts is the con module???

Not too difficult, once you kn ow where the bulkhead grommet is, and the C/Mod is below the fuse box, it has lots of relays on it.

I'll be doing it with one of the technicians from our workshop so I hope he will have some idea!!!

Take it you just need to identify the correct relay?!? Where on the cluster do you need to run the wire from??
