Title: RCD510
Post by: jamesh72 on February 24, 2010, 03:36:36 pm
OK, I'm thinking about getting a RCD510 to replace the RCD300 in my ED30. There are a few on ebay right now.
What I need to know is what additional bits I need to make it work with my iphone. I'd like playlist and tracklistings.

There seem to be a few things I require, but I'm not 100%-

1. Canbus - haven't a clue what this is.
2. aerial adaptor.
3. MDI

Anything else I need to know?

You need to check the version of your can-gateway if going to a RCD510 otherwise you could end up with a flat battery. What's the age of your car?

To play mp3 tracks from your iphone you will need the MDI, it will also allow you to play mp3s from usb sticks.

Only the MDI will give you track names on the front of the RCD510 any other ipod interface won't. There are two versions of the MDI, one fits in the glovebox, the other in the armrest to replace the cd changer if fitted. If you don't have the cd changer in the armrest then its a lot of work to swap over

Don't think you need an aerial adaptor

Thanks for the info.
My car is an '07, and currently has an rcd300 with ipod lead in the glove box. I'm happy to continue with using the ipod in the glovebox to be honest.

Also, does anyone know if the rcd510 charges the iphone?

As far as I know only the MDI charges the iphone as Apple did away with the firewire charging pins, so older connectors won't have the ability

Just had an RCD510 fitted & it's a fine piece of kit. With an '07 car you will need a Canbus Gateway upgrade. Personally I wouldn't pay for the MDI interface, I'd just put some music on an SD/SDHC card (up to 32gb) and use that.

I bought mine from a forum member who sells on ebay & his service was brilliant, fitted it for me and my Canbus was programmed as well.

Ideally you also need the aerial adaptor 7L6 051 551 at around €25

Apologies for the resurrection, but I didn't want to be accused of not using the search function, did I?  :innocent:

I would also like to fit an RCD510 in place of my 300. My car is a late 2007 and it has an armrest CD changer fitted. So to the questions:

1) Will I need this upgraded CANBUS controller?

2) Is the RCD510 a direct swap with regards to the connections at the rear? (apart from the aerial, which I know about)

3) If I were to swap out the changer for an MDI/iPod dock, would it use the same cable going back to the headunit?

Indeed the MDI does charge the iPhone Inc. the iPhone 4 as I`ve fitted mine and all works well...

Good questions i need to do exactly the same my car is a 07 and i do need to change the CAN gateway. If you get someone nearly by with VCDS cable they can check the version for you.

There are plenty of guides online i think the swap over is quite a simple job. No idea on the cable tbh...

1) I've just done a very similar upgrade putting the RNS510 (sat nav) unit in mine. I think the RCD510 needs a CAN gateway revision of something like L or newer. I believe cars built in 2007 were at about this revision letter so you may be lucky. My car is an early 2006 and was a revision E so had to be changed. You can either use VCDS to find out the revision or alternatively if you don't have access to this and your CAN gateway is located in one of the easier to find locations then you can have a look at the revision letter printed on the unit.

2) I think you will probably need to do the following as the RCD300 is a second generation headunit:
http://www.my-gti.com/1336/cd-changer-audio-sound-quality-problems-after-changing-head-unit (very useful website for this kind of stuff)

3) I think the old iPod dock (not the newer MDI) cable is the same as the CD changer cable but plugged into a iPod controller at the armrest end rather than a CD changer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the tips, folks.  :happy2:

Got another from a fella at work who told me to make sure the airbag switch is plugged back in before turning the ignition on to test the install. You get a warning light on the dash otherwise.

hi, this is my first post and its purely informational as i havent seen anyone ask or answer all my questions...

Will i be able to fit an RCD510 in my '09 mk5 Golf?

Will an aftermarket subwoofer (integrated sub/amp deal) attach directly via phono?

If the answers are no, what equipment am i likely to need as i have a budget of about 200 for the whole lot, which leaves about 50 after the head unit purchase.

The RCD510 will a lot straight into your car. No CAN Gateway upgrade needed. Not sure about the 2nd question. :stupid:

I have an excellent RCD510 for sale in the classifieds.

Mines is a late 2007 golf and by opening the little compartment underneath the light switch to the right of the steering wheel and taking it out , then if you clip out bracket that's right infront of you then look up and to the back you may see something with a red connection. If you can get your hand up there , clip it out and turn it round you should be able to read the part number. It does help that I have skinny hands though!

I've unclipped the compartment under the light switch and I think I can see the gateway up the back but I can't get to it it's doing my head in lol. Is there anything else I can remove to get my hand in there as it's too tight with the relay panel in the way!

Thanks

There is another way of getting to it by going under the bonnet. Better for sausage fingered people!

I have seen that too but I don't think I trust myself taking all those bits off haha and I hear it's a real pain getting the wipers off without the correct tool! If all else fails I'll have to pay someone to do it for me lol!

The other option is to find your local friendly forum member with VCDS and get your car scanned, this will tell you which Gateway you have
