Title: Edition 30 - Black - Manual - No.1994
Post by: Matimcfet on September 03, 2019, 09:10:38 pm
So after having a mk5 gti when I was 19, I have rejoined after buying my first ed30 from @absolute (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8305)

Car really is a pleasure to drive and a credit to previous owners.

Anyway heres a picture after the first proper clean I gave her. Im actually really impressed with the paint, not a dint anywhere on the car, few expected stone chips etc but I think this is the first car I have ever owned without a single dent  :drinking:

Here is a picture of her at Field of Dreams aircooled festival at the weekend after a 6 hour polish and detail.(https://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh635/matimcfet/97C6BEA6-B3B5-4E88-A765-5586BB3F0007_zpsylltxna4.png) (https://s1255.photobucket.com/user/matimcfet/media/97C6BEA6-B3B5-4E88-A765-5586BB3F0007_zpsylltxna4.png.html)

Wasted no time with a few little things, needed a new bolt for the drivers side bumper to line the arch up properly, unfortunately I made the mistake of messing with the indicators in the depo headlights which was a bad move (ended up blowing one) so ordered a few h21 bulbs too. Also transferred my reg over and ordered a 5 digit short plate for the front as well as a us spec smooth grill to keep things tidy, on the rear I went for a slightly shorter plate but not quite as short as the front, unsure how I feel about the look of this as the rear of this car has a clear recess for a full size plate! let me know what you think.

also booked into the trimmers friday for new bolster leather!

It's pictures like this that make me regret selling it! Wow, what a job you've done on that, looks fantastic.

Really looking forward to seeing this evolve.

Always loved black GTI’s almost got one then I remembered how much I hate cleaning cars!

It’s always been a pet peeve when plates don’t fit the size of the recess always looks like they have shrunk in the wash!

Any future plans?

It’s crying out for some open fog grills

Few bits came today, got the smooth grill on and new front plate! Really like how it looks and seems to tidy the front end up nicely. Didnt feel like putting the gti badge back on as I quite like it looking plain with just the red trim. Also managed to scratch the new grill with the old grill, who knows how but very annoying also got open fog grills put on and overall very happy with the front end.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190905/23a7c4e7790a113e8e0386c868159791.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190905/23a7c4e7790a113e8e0386c868159791.jpg)

How would you summarise the main ownership/driving differences between a GTi and an ED30 GTi?

I'm very tempted to swap my GTi for an ED30.  Guess you'd feel that bit more special every time you take it out.

I'm very tempted to swap my GTi for an ED30.  Guess you'd feel that bit more special every time you take it out.

I had a standard GTI stage 1 for 4 years, just upgraded to a ED30 that was standard when I got it.

The standard ED30 felt just as quick as standard GTI on stage 1. You can defo feel that the K04 turbo is bigger and working longer into the revs and more effortlessly than the K03.

But...

Then I got the ED30 Stage 1 mapped to 310bhp and its insanely fast and much much much much faster. I was planning to go to 2+ but I'm spending the money on brakes and running gear instead.

In short I wish I had got the ED30 4 years ago. Amazing machine. On the outside it looks similar to standard GTI but the engine is very different and much better IMO.

Get an unmodified ED30 and stage 1 it and you'll have the most amazing car. Even if you don't Stage 1 it is still a much better engine that standard
