I'm starting to really like my '07 gti now I've driven it for a couple of hundred miles.
Now I've read that they collect muck and leaves in the front of the sills and the rear of the front wheel arches.
I noticed the other day that with the front doors open that the space mentioned above was chock full of muck so I hooked it out.
It was bone dry and there was no evidence of rust at all. Is this the problem area and if so what can be done about it?
I wondered about hoovering it out then spraying some grease or waxoil in there.
What have long term owners done?

Amp her way of cleaning it is to loosen off the arch liner and cleaning behind as it all gets trapped in that space too

Only solution is regular cleaning. A protective coating will help I use Normfest from eurocarparts or carparts4less
Mud flaps dont help as they trap even more dirt. Have you removed the foam inside the wing :happy2:

Thanks terrier, no I havn't removed the foam as it is already rusting in the normal areas. I will probably replace the wings when funds allow.
Is there a 'How to' on loosening the wheel arches?

Yes thanks I was already on it. I realised after posting!

Yeah drop the arch liners, clean it all out and then spray some waxoyl type stuff, but not actual waxoyl as it's crap. I use Würth underbody protection wax. My dealer mate gave me a load of cans years ago as it's what VW use at the factory, or used to at least.
It's more like a thin 'fluid film' and I cake everything underneath with it, especially the rear trailing arms and subframe etc which rust up pretty badly.
You can get thicker, gunkier products from POR15 or Dinitrol if you want high end stuff!
