Hi all looking to replace my Timing chain and tensioner on my Gti, my local garage refused to do it and have been quoted £900 plus by another garage which seems very high. I'm pretty sure they are thinking of a different Timing chain set up for that quote and have suggested to bring my car so they can view my engine to give another quote, I will be getting the parts myself from VW but wanted to know roughly how many hours labour is it and what sort of prices have people paid?
Thanks in advance.

If youre doing the chain and tension you’ll want to change the adjuster (which is the part which normally causes the rattling sounds) too, Volkswagen quoted me 900 for just chain and tensioner, where as a local specialist quoted me 1300 for chain, tensioner and adjuster.

Hi mate I haven’t had mine done yet, but I think the price is in the region of £4-500 with parts and labour.
Where about are you based

So theres a chain AND a belt?
Well, technically 2 chains and a belt but only one of them suffers with wear Over time so the other never gets mentioned.

Hi mate, that's sounds more like a better price as Aks sell a genuine Timing chain kit for around £200 so I've been told. I'm based in Bristol

Refused to do it? They have one job.....to fix cars  Still, if they can turn down work, I'm in the wrong business!
A lot of people do this job themselves because it's not difficult, and there's a comprehensive guide on here.

Pfff... I did mine on the drive :signLOL:

There’s a number of things I’ll do myself, but this isn’t one of them!!!
£395 all in from AKS, IMO is a good price and it’s not as if it has to be done on a regular basis

Baaaah, it's only a lump of metal :P If you can put a Lego Technik model together, you can do this. Engines are expensive Lego sure, but it's still just little pieces put together in a specific order to make one big, oil burning, fuel guzzling, rattly old bag of bolts
Did mine on the drive as well, first attempt, no problems

LOL - Lego!!!!
I'll settle on paying £150 Labour for a professional to do it!!!
-
any decent garage should be able to check Autodata gives times methods etc.,
-
I’ll settle for AKS, as seen their work and come highly recommended
