Title: Rear Brakes M14 Spline

Hello, attempted to change the rear discs and pads on my 2007 GTI today. I watched a video and needed to pick up an M14 Spline to remove the caliper  so off I went to my local tool place and picked on up. Cracked on with the job, but couldnt for the life of me get the leverage to loosen the two M14 bolts? My M14 bit is quite long (longer than the one in the video I watched) is this why I am struggling? Any other tips for what I was hoping was some routine maintenance?

It's a massive ball ache!  I had the same issue. Solved it by buying a swivel head extending ratchet off Amazon.  Allows you just enough room to angle the head so that the ratchet handle clears the wheel arch and you can push/pull it from above.

I did manage to get one off before I bought it, by lying on the floor and using my feet to push the spanner. Others wouldn't come out like this - too tight.

Sealey AK6682 1/2"Sq Drive Extendable Flexi is what its called..

Couldn't have done it without it.

In a word yes. You really need a stubby spline bit. I also find an extendable ratchet with a swivel head helps get the extra leverage at the awkward angles you need to get them undone, they can be on very tight. It's not too bad when it's suspended on a lift but it can be a sod when lying on the ground as you need a bit of swinging room.

Thanks for the replies, what a nightmare! Ill leave it to the pro’s I think, the ratchet is £30-40, and Ive already spent £11 on the m14

I used a short sledgehammer on the end of the bar to crack them loose.

I use a long jack handle on a breaker bar but do have the advantage of a rwmp

Don't blame you!  One of those jobs you try/do once but send it to the mechanic the second time.

Once they have been off once they come off easy after that.

I've got uptown M12 and the M14 I've got is too long. By the time I've bought a new bar ill have spent more than the brakes cost haha
