Hello, I swear forums make you paranoid, but the more I read, the more maintenance I want to do before I get stuck in.
I have a 2007 GTI on 96k. Service history was excellent from 2007-2015, it had a lot of money spent and was serviced very regularly, and had a new cambelt apparently!
Fast forward to now, Its now mine, Ive not got much in terms of history other than MOTs. So Im starting fresh.
It has an after market intake so air filter isnt needed.
Ive got to do/done:
Oil, Oil Filter, new pick up
Pollen filter
Spark Plugs
Fuel Filter
Cam Belt Kit, Water Pump Aux belt
Discs + Pads
Top Mounts as I believe theyre knocking
Ive changed to the latest R Part Number PCV and I also have the Rev G DV to fit
That I thought would give it a nice clean bill of health, and I could start to modify/tidy, but Im reading I should also look at two more things...
Cam Chain - I believe this is around £400?
Cam Follower - Ive read this can cause Havoc, so want to get it changed/looked at. I believe this isnt an expensive part? But can someone confirm what Id be looking at to get it supplied/fitted?
Thanks

Hi Kpowell, see the following links for the cam follower
https://www.akstuning.co.uk/service-items/1203-genuine-20tfsi-fuel-pump-cam-follower-replacement-kit.html?search_query=cam+follower&results=57
https://www.akstuning.co.uk/genuine-oem-parts/1-0tfsi-fuel-pump-cam-follower.html?search_query=cam+follower&results=57
Depending where or who you get to replace it; it should be more than one hours labour.

Thanks for the reply, do you mean ‘SHOULDN’T’ be more than an hours labour?
Mine being a 2007 should be the harder one hopefully, will still get it checked out

Interesting re the Cam Follower. My GTi had covered 128k when I got it in Feb 19 (for a silly price) via my son. He works for Audi and took the car in as a PX. One owner from new, FVWSH, immaculate car......but despite all this never had cam follower changed. I did this myself as its piss easy and was surprised that it actually lasted that long. Wasnt in bad nick, and no pitting or evidence that it was about to let go. Pot luck i guess, but i will nw be replacing every 12k miles :-)

I paid £45 for cam follower and new O-seal from VW, DIY job takes around 20-30 minutes if you're handy with tools. I've also just bought a Cam chain kit as I keep hearing horror stories about them ect so I think it's best I get it mine fitted and done for peace of mind.

Id love to have a go myself, part of the reason I went with an older model is cause I wanted something I could work on myself, but reality hit when I struggled with the rear brake, just couldnt get the M14 Spline tool off.
Looking at the guide for the cam follower, getting the engine at TDC looks a nightmare

There is a YouTube video on how to change the cam follower, that's how I learned to do mine.

Getting the engine to tdc isn't strictly necessary, I've never bothered when I've changed mine.

Hello, I swear forums make you paranoid,
I must admit the more I read forums and the Facebook groups the less I feel confident in driving mine! :driver:

The rear brake is bloody awkward (That M14 Spline) to do for such a simple job, don't let it put you off as many of the maintenance items you speak of are fairly simple to do yourself
Oil, Oil Filter, new pick up - Oil and filter as simple - get an oil filter socket. Pick up again is simple, just get a good quality sealant
Pollen filter - easy
Spark Plugs - easy
Fuel Filter - easy
Cam Belt Kit, Water Pump Aux belt - again straight forward as far as cam belts go, nothing awkward about it
Discs + Pads - straight forward
Top Mounts as I believe theyre knocking - There are MANY things that cause knocking on these cars, Steering racks are prone to causing issues
Rev G - straight forward just a pain to access. I go through the drivers side wheel area and use lots of extensions
Cam Chain - This isn't a service item and people change them when the tensioners start to fail and make the car sound like a rattly old diesel when warm. It's rare for them to fail/snap unless there are underlying issue with oil pressure, usually caused by the pickup, although pump failure is not uncommon
Cam Follower - very important, very easy DIY. You don't need TDC - that's only so the pump can be fitted without compressing the piston. You can fit the pump at any engine position but you may need to apply a reasonable amount of pressure to hold the pump in place while you tighten the bolts. DO NOT USE THE BOLTS to pull the pump into position or you will likely strip the threads in the chain cover/housing

What an excellent post! Thank you so much!
Great news about the Cam Chain, ill pay attention but move it from the top of my list.
Also, interesting note on the steering, it does knock when going full lock to lock, ie reversing onto drive

I needed rear discs and pads doing and I Had a friend recommend me his mechanic who works on his cars. The mechanic in question has an R-Tech Stage 2+ S3 so knew his stuff. We agreed fair price for him to complete all the work I need doing....
He is going to change my Cam Follower when he does my belts/Service next month so Ive picked up a kit :)
SHOULD be ready for cosmetic and performance mods then.

The previous owner of mine replaced a 'Diverter Valve'...?

Facebook also makes people feel paranoid about bowel cancer
You can always rely on the internet to completely over blow a small thing into a wallet bursting 'common problem', when the reality is very different
If people understand how cars and engines work, and have even a modest tool selection, nothing on these cars is unsurmountable or THAT expensive.......unless you blow the engine from too much boost.

I just read on Facebook that my car will be down on MPG as I’ve got a bigger turbo injectors and de cat. OH NO I’m now not gonna sleep and will fall in to deep depression

I got an extra long spline tool on e bay so with a long extention and power bar made it easier to undo caliper splines a pit made it easier
