Hi guys,
Got some bad news after putting my GTI through an interval service (oil, all filters and sparks) last night. I also had 2 new tyres with me as the fronts looked fairly worn.
Basically I got a report back as follows:
- Needs rear wishbone bushes - €160
- Front shocks need to be replaced as left one is leaking - €335
- 4 new tyres - rear are unevenly worn
- Front and rear left wheels are buckled (I'm going to need to get these looked at by a specialist before they go back to the garage)
-Tyres were supplied but not fitted due to back wishbone bushes being worn and front shocks needed so tracking will need to be done afterwards regardless.
How much do the parts I need cost??
The money quoted above is parts and labour included I believe.
This was a nasty surprise for me, so I'm obviously looking at limiting the damage so maybe I could get my indy to put new parts on? Or is this work something people here would be more inclined to leave with VW?

I would replace all the parts with aftermarket gear, it will probably work out cheaper than the steelers and invariably you will be getting a better product :happy2: :wink:

How old is the car, what mileage has it done and how much stick do you give it? :confused:

Thanks for replies lads. I only bought the car 4 weeks ago, and I can't say i've driven the arse out of it in that time.
Mods would be down my list of priorities right now as I have just bought new tyres and I am still trying to sell my old Golf, so money won't be thrown at mods for quite a while.
Now since my post this morning, the car passed the NCT!!!! I'm very confused right now to say the least! Think I may have to go for a second opinion!

How many miles has your car done?
I've got a complete set of shocks and springs for a GTi ready for a new home if you're interested?

It's a 2006 reg and only has 42k miles on it (69k kms). I may go for that second opinion, and if it looks as if I have to go the route of those new parts, I may get back to you!

Unless its seen heavy track use, that list sounds like crap to me, mine has done 88k miles is a 55 plate and on original suspension which is all fine.

Thanks for the replies lads. I'm going to bring it to my indy mechanic over the next day or so. He asked me to bring the NCT report out too along with the garages printed report, so he can see what kind of imbalance stats showed up during the test and see whether or not they are blowing things out of proportion.
As far as I'm aware, the car has never seen a track. I can't fault the ride either, and there are no rattles or external noises of note.

I took a spin out to my indy mechanic an hour ago to collect something from him, but I got a chance to show him the NCT report as well as the garage report. He reckons their trying to squeeze a few quid out of me. NCT report shows that front axel suspension has an imbalance of 8%, with the rear on 3%. This would seem to point to the fact that the front shocks are far from finished. Also bear in mind that a car classed as unroadworthy needs to be above 30% imbalance. Add to that the fact that I can't really fault the ride quality.
I'm bringing the car out to him on Saturday morning for him to put on the lift, so he can fully inspect shocks, bushes and alloys.
