Title: Cambelt changed now oil warning light
Post by: bobby_fodge on January 03, 2020, 11:48:49 am
Hi, my cambelt and waterpump were changed by a decent garage on Monday. This was done as the spindle on which the oil pump chain sprocket spins were almost completely sheared off and I needed a new oil pump. The oil, oil filter and pickup pipe were also changed. I got them to fit a VIS free wheeling oil pump sprocket at the same time. This sheared sprocket was found to be the case when I took the car in as the low oil pressure warning message appeared on my dash.

I have since driven 60 miles trouble free but have now seen the red oil can dashboard icon and the warning to shut off the engine message. Car has been back to the garage and they has mechanically measured the oil pressure which is fine. They saw the warning light appear when out in the car themselves. They are going to fit a new oil pressure sensor today, more in hope than in expectation though.

Is it worth me changing the camshaft position and engine speed sensors? I'm thinking in case one or both have somehow started misbehaving since the oil pump and cambelt work?

Any ideas why the warning appears so infrequently?

Hey Bobby, weird one that ennit. Maybe replace the oil sensor and see how it goes. Otherwise just ask them to double check the work.

oil pressure sensor replaced. Drove 15 miles home and no dash warnings.  Have ordered a camshaft position sensor from TPS as well. I know there is no code in VCDS to suggest the camshaft sensor is bad but worth the £40 if it solves the problem.

There is a code for the cam sensor if it dies completely, but not when it gets covered in swarf (common) which degrades the signal a bit.

Oil warning still appearing on dash after 20 ish miles.

So the oil pressure sensor wasn't faulty.

I'm going to fit a couple of dash mounted gauges, oil pressure and oil temp. It'll be interesting to see the oil pressure and temp when the oil warning appears.

Before I purchased my gti Ed30 I was told the oil pressure sensor warning was just a a sensor which I replaced since owning the vehicle I have replaced the oil pump Cambelt water pump, sensor, None of which sorted the issue. I was driving on the motorway and my timing Chain snapped I have replaced the head along with new timing chain and tensioner but the light still appears to come on any ideas what this can be

£1500 for a new oil pump/balancer, probably the same in head work, £200 in cambelt parts, £200 in cam chain parts...... you're dedicated!  Have you had the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge?  Seems strange to have replaced all of the key components and still have low oil pressure.

Need to do some investigating with VCDS.

If you had a new oil pump fitted, were the balance shafts timed correctly? Similarly with the head, was the chain timed correctly?

I would go back to basics to ensure the engine is mechanically timed correctly and go from there.
