Whilst browsing the forum I am coming across a lot of topics on people who's clutches have been failing. I have noticed it is mainly on edition 30 gti's and Audi s3's. Just want to know if anyone with a mk5 gti (200ps) has had this problem with a stage 1 remap? I am starting to reconsider getting mine done if this is the case.

Mine is slipping but im on STG2, I wouldnt let it put you off! :driver:
-
what are you running on stage 2 on a gti?
jst intrigued as to what figures
-
My GTI has only been on the Superchips RR and they dyno'd it at 276BHP
-
good figures mate

Cheers, maybe a little optimistic though!

Did you run it on stage 1 for long or did you go straight ahead with stage 2? It is off putting though because once you have spend £400 to £500 on a map then sooner or later you will need to spend £700 - £900 replacing a clutch?
-
I went straight to Stage 2, I think VWR will do the clutch for about £550-£600 fitted, but yeah its a big pill to swallow if you need it doing straight away. Mine started slipping after about 4-5k miles of use.

This not good at all, I wonder why clutches in the 1.8t golfs and audi's didn't fail when remaped. Surely there can't be a big difference? Anyone else having bother?

I'm the same. I wanted to remap myn Ed30 thinking it was a lot of return for relatively little outlay , approx 500 for a good remap. However clearly the standard clutch isn't up to it and from trawling through the threads it appears you're looking at about £900 fitted for an uprated clutch. Not to mention whether the DMF is up to the job - there are lot's of threads saying it isn't.
So the remap plus clutch plus possible DMF takes things past the £1500 mark and unfortunately I don't have that sort of spare cash to throw at my car.
Shame the standard manual clutch wasn't as resilient as the DSG.

Yeah it sucks big time this! I'm happy to keep me car with the standard power but just feel a bit let down by this.
-
Yea mine went at stage 1 taking the flywheel with it. The day this clutch starts slipping is the day i trade it in for something else

Because i dont want to pay near £700 every 12 months! I've had it fixed incase i wasn't clear but if it goes again after 6k then the car will be gone. Remap off the car feels awful and would rather drive the other halfs cooper s

every 12months change  mines been in for over 30k now its awesome vwr clutch

yes, I considered an upgrade but I like the oem feel and was told I was most likely unlucky? In theory I should have swapped the car 2.5 years ago, I've never kept one more than 19 months and I've had it 4 years Now lol. Shows how hard these cars are to beat. I should change it but there is nothing I want to replace it with !! If the clutch starts slipping I'll probably buy a 3 series coupe with a diesel
-
Trade it in and buy an r32 Strapper :happy2:  Or buy my "Slip free Ed30" :fighting:

Just had a thought, surely a stage 1 mk5 gti wilth 240-250bhp is just the same as a leon cupra? Therefore a stage 1 map should be ok or am I just being nieve?

It's more the torque that is the issue and stage one gti's deliver more torque, lower down in the rev range than the bigger k04 brothers. Mine delivers 308 lb at 2000rpm and it's this low down torque that destroys the clutches

sorry if this seems daft but just joined the forum last night and tonight my clutch has gone! :sad1: well i think its well on its way. I started the car this evening after work and would not go into any gear, turned it off and it went in. i ended up jumping it off and then i could get gears after this. however it hasn't felt the same since.
sorry for jacking the thread by the way, just thought i'd see if anyboy could recommend a decent clutch that aint gunna go after a stage1 remap that I'm thinking of doing, and rough cost of parts. i never realised clutches were an issue, i knew a dsg box was a better idea :(
can any body help?!
