Title: Funny air con noise
Post by: Boothy on March 04, 2010, 06:19:18 pm
Put my aircon on for the first time for a while as we managed to get up to a warm 11 degrees c. For some reason though the aircon is now making a funny metalic sort of rasp. Its not a constant noise, more like a pulsing sort of sound which seems to get slightly more frequent when you give it a bit of gas and if I turn the aircon off it stops straight away?

Could this be connected to having the cambelt changed maybe or is it just on its last legs? Does anyone know if they can be refurbished/serviced etc and where I'd go to have that sort of thing done?

Could someone tell where the air con unit is located in the engine bay? I'm convinced that the unit is causing something to vibrate which is transmitting to behind the dash but I have no idea what it looks like or where its located. Help.

Ta.

You better check the exact location of the noise. It could be an ordinary noise but after a longer time it could be a serious problem with your unit. Don't just ignore these things for it might give you more serious problems.

Did you get to the bottom of this problem? I turned the aircon on the other day I got a similar sort of sound. It is only there when the aircon is turned on and goes off straight away when the econ button is pressed. The noise is more noticeable inside the car.
The aircon does blow cold but not especially so.

My aircon has been re gassed just over 18 months ago as the pressure was low enough for the aircon not to work. VW wouldn't investigate if there was a leak as it was a warrenty claim and the aircon stayed up to pressure for the two weeks between tests.!!! :congrats:

Like Boothy I have also had my cam belt & tensioner changed.

Any ideas folks???

Any help would be appreciated.

Tagnut.

I never really resolved the issue however a few months later the whole system just packed up and wouldn't engage at all. It ended up being the Compressor and the pressure sensor that were at fault. I have already replied to your PM but thought I would post this for anyone else who looks at the thread in the future.

This definitely sounds like the compressor, had the same issue with mine a few weeks ago and had no issues getting it claimed under warranty. Do you get a gravelly whirring noise that is linked to engine speed - i.e. pitch changes but is worst when a few 100 rpm over tick over. If it is still under warranty get it booked in - they used UV dye to establish the leak, which was actually on the compressor in my case and put it through under warranty without any probs.

Thanks for the replies. Going to call the dealer today to see when they have a look at it.
Unfortunately the car is now out of warrenty!

IF it is the compressor I will be going APE at the service department as there had been a problem before which they wouldn't investigate further, even though they had put UV dye in the system they wouldn't look for a leak.

Searching on the internet it looks like the compressor is a weak component and seems to fail easily.

Has anybody had to pay to get theirs replaced?

Well the car is booked in.

They think it is the compressor, the end pulley on the compressor is still turning. They think that the shaft may have broken inside.

I paid......I paid a lot! THe compressor and fitting was £600 for me and that was with 5% of parts and 20% of labour. You can get cheaper on the web but the cheaper ones I looked at wouldn't honour a guarantee unless most of the other parts were replaced at the same time. By the time I'd totalled all that up is more beneficial to go to the dealer and get the 2 year warranty.

Well probably you need to bring your car to the air con specialist to have it checked if that noise you heard whenever you turn your air con is not destructive for your car. Having it checked will let you determine your car's safety too. picture jewelry (http://www.hollymariejewelry.com/) mom jewelry (http://www.hollymariejewelry.com/necklaces-c-9)

I totally agree to some other bloggers out there , you must do to check-up to the air con specialist as to repair the noisy sounds.I have just an opinion to it.

I have a similar annoying metalicy noise from inside the car it sounds as if its coming from behind the dashboard! Could this be my compressor on its way out?

I had the metallic whirring sound linked to engine speed and apparently its down to metal fragments shearing and causing havoc packing in the compressor slowly. Got mine done under warranty.

After having that done my condenser decided to fail and system kept losing pressure in 24-36hrs which is when they pumped in the UV tracer. Didnt use UV for the compressor issue as i think i described it well enough.

My car has just ticked over 30k miles so its certainly not wear and tear. All mine done under warranty after many trips to the dealers and calls to VW care esp for the condenser!

I think there must be an issue with compressors fitted from factory. mines 57 plate september 07 manufacture.
