Title: Would You...
Post by: Cian86 on February 24, 2020, 04:29:15 pm
An almost perfect car has come up for me, and I've been looking for aaaaages.

3 door. Tornado Red. DSG. Heated leather. Xenons. It has 122,000 miles. It's £3,250 which is decent. It's four/five hours away from me. And a flight.

The catch?.......... No service history.

Would you?

Personally - no.  I'd buy a car with no history, but wouldn't take a flight to look at one.

Why not have the seller walk around taking some videos and, if you like it, pay a garage near the seller to do an inspection.

How does a 122k mile car have zero history? Lost in a house move/previous owner said he'd send it on? They are two of the usual excuses.

Has the current owner not even changed the oil?

You can buy xenons and leather seats from Ebay to retrofit.

That just can't be a cared for car.

Yeah from speaking with the garage (small outfit) it sounds like it just wasn't handed in with the car when it was traded in. The leather is in great condition and it looks well minded. But still, no official paper trail.

So hard to say without actually seeing it in person I’ve viewed probably 20 gti’s / edition30s in the last month and they all looked good it the photos but 90% of them where dogs in person.

Have you checked the mot history?

I personally wouldn’t buy a dsg with that many miles and no history of the box being serviced.

Those no history cars are easy to buy and hard to sell. I think for that reason alone it is probably worth waiting for the right car.

Didn’t know I could check the history (I’m in Ireland!) just did it there. Plenty of history there but not enough.

No way I’d be travelling from Ireland to here for a 3k car with no history, someone from Ireland was selling one on here not long ago he asked if I wanted to buy it

Looking at the state of the buttons on the radio and the DSG surround -the previous owner must have been Edward Scissor Hands!

Shown Rear disc has uneven wear - caliper probably seized
Gti badge - how is it wonky?
Near side wing has a dent
Leather Front of drivers bolster looks odd - more going on here

Ignoring the spec & lack of service, that’s a strong price even for the mileage
has it been sitting there for a while?
It would be worth a punt at the right price - highlight the problems above and Low ball them £2.5k cash on collection.

Looking at the photos, even if it had a service history I wouldn't go to see it.  Interior is in a poor condition for the price asked for.

Leave well alone. Service history is, to me the most important thing on these cars, and certainly with 122k
Albeit I got mine through my son as he took in PX (works for Audi) for £1800 with one owner from new and 128k, I wouldn’t have touched it if it didn’t come with a FVWSH and the pile of receipts together with stamped service book.

Conclusive enough opinions, thanks.

I was getting drawn in by the spec, rear bumper, 18"s and leather. But more rational thoughts are now telling me otherwise!

Thanks everyone. The search continues!

I’ve bought cars with no history in the past but always because they were a good price.

I recently bought a 58 plate 1.9tdi match mk5 for my mum that had done 140k with no history. From looking at the car i could tell it had been looked after (new tyres, brakes, clean oil, new battery) after buying it I called the vw dealer that was on the reg plates to then find out it had near full history from them

Exactly.  Mine at 140K has an A4 box file full of invoices and a VW service book that's maxxed out. Need a new service book, which VW charge for, so sod that.

This is the tricky thing with private vs trade.  The trader will want shot of it asap and clearly made zero effort to acquire any kind of history on it, or produce a decent representation of the car.  Whereas a private seller who is clearly diligent in the car's upkeep is immediately obvious, just in his/her demeanour and attitude....receipts aside.

Looking at the pics, it's a total shed.  Sizeable supermarket carpark dent in the passenger door, peeling interior trims, shredded driver's seat bolster.....etc.  The pics are low res on purpose. It'll be a lot worse in the flesh.
