Changed my oil and filter yesterday and I reackon I put in 4.5 litres through the oil cap, however when I checked the dipstick it seemed a little over the max line after a few engine cycles.
I check the levels today when cold from sitting overnight on flat ground and the oil is right at the max line, but not over, so I guess I overfilled a little. My worry is how much I put in the oil filter housing before screwing it back underneath the car. Does anyone know the capacity of that on its own?
4.6litres is the capacity total, so Im guessing I may have put in around 4.7-4.8litres total

I'm sure I read somewhere dry capacity is 4.7 litres. There will always be pockets of oil in the head, corners of the sump, in the oil pump etc that remain......but either way, 100ml over is nothing to worry about.

Ive never bothered to fill the oil filter when doing oil changes. I would imagine its about 100-200ml.. the filter takes up a lot of space in the housing.

Yeah cheers, boys I could calculate volume if I knew the dimensions but new filters on ebay only show package dimensions so it would be way off. By dry capacity, you mean like an engine with not a drop put in? Would you ever get a CEL for too much oil? it would make sense since low levels you do
-
Yeah as in a brand new engine. I never measure out my oil. I just chuck most of a 5 litre tub in, perhaps an inch or so left at the bottom. Seems to put it a few mm above max which is fine.
You won't get a CEL from over filling it. The under fill light isn't a CEL, it's just a reminder like the low screen wash light.
Even if you over fill it by a litre, the worst that will happen is some of it will get forced into the PCV system. I've accidentally put half a litre too much in before and nothing happened. You're over thinking it :happy2:

Beauty cheers mate
I definitely am ahah :happy2:

About 4.8 total capacityl I’ve found on both a 2006 Gti and 2008 Edition 30.

Cheers for that bud! I guess the manual advised capacity wouldn't be the absolute limit for idiots like me ahah
I re-checked my levels yesterday a week after the change, 20 minutes after a warm run and the level is right at the max line, not longer over it :happy2: :happy2:
