Title: Check your boot handle for rust
Post by: shail on April 20, 2020, 11:59:30 am
I had the tinyest bit of bubbling on the boot by the handle.

Took handle off to find quite a bit of corrosion inside the lip.

Glad I caught it when I did.  Paint job isn't going to be the best but when you are looking at the badge, you hopefully won't be able to see the new paint line.  I chose not to blend as the panel is so big and I'm not great at it!

I’ve been thinking about this recently after I washed my car the other day I see a good amount of water sitting in the boot handle, not sure if it’s possible to drill a hole and add a drain plug/tube or maybe seal the area some how to prevent the rust setting in.

I always made sure I dried any water sitting inside the boot handle and it still rusted. It starts from the inside I think.
Was it difficult to remove the boot handle / badge?

No not hard.  Just a couple of screws holding the boot trim, then pull it off (takes quite a bit of force) then 3 bolts holding the handle in.  I had to undo wiper motor and pull it out a bit to get to one of the bolts.   Handle then comes out after a quarter turn.  Took about 10 mins.

If anyone is planning on keeping their cars long term its probably worth popping the handle out cleaning the area of the bootlid that the handle sits in and putting a coat of underseal in there, while you are at it maybe do the same for the same for the front wings as that is the other common rust area in MK5s. They are both easy jobs and great preventative maintenance.

Painted.  Accidently smeared the lacquer onto the boot which was annoying.  Hopefully it will buff out! Other than that I'm happy with the results.
