Post by: fuscobal on March 08, 2010, 09:09:06 pm
I will start :

Best time was 9min20sec in lap 5 out of 5 laps. I only did 5 laps in april 2009 and this year between 28th apr and 2nd may it will be my second event. I'll come back with the results !

i never timed myself around there as i saw it as a recipe for disaster doing that.  i just looked at the trip computer and id say i was consistantly around the low 9 minute very high 8 minute region afer alot of laps there.  was just starting to get to know the track well as i left.

Not me, but my car and previous owner did an 8.51. Dont know if its any good or not?
I personally have no interest in taking my car there, but it was the only candy white edition 30 i could find at the time i was hunting for so had no choice but to accept its past! lol.  :driver: I would think there a pretty good car round the nurburgring.

Is this bridge to gantry?

If so tom did an 9.27 in October
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here

I did two 9'10" in October - BtoG

One was my first ever lap on the 'ring and was in the damp and the second was in the wet......on R888's :driver:

Going again in April (19th), but the lap times will be longer as the lap includes the full 'ring lap plus the GP sprint circuit.

If I set up the Racelogic Performance Box correctly I can do lap times to 0.1 seconds and add up to 6 section times.

That would mean ...

Lap start/finish on the s/f line
section 1 end on joining the 'ring
section 2 end at the gantry
section 3 end at the bridge
section 4 end on joining the sprint circuit

The only sections that I'd miss would be a 3 second gap of the ring and a 3 second gap on the sprint circuit, but getting on and off the sprint circuit/'ring have their own bends, so the difference in reality is probably zero.

These sections should allow me to calculate the GP sprint circuit times, the full 'ring times and the bridge to gantry times. :happy2:

9'10'' on a FWD and with semislicks on wet ??? This seems close to impossible to me ! Mayebe the measurements have been made at different positions. I've measured from the first bridge (last year it had a commercial with Bilstein on it) to the commercial with Audi RS6 quattro. This sin't a full lap (it exclude the longest straight line as you have to go out of the track each lap and enter again using your card !

Ask Greenouse, he was in the car with me, hanging on like his life depended on it

It was bridge to gantry. (see sig pic below for how wet!)

Also did a 10 minute lap in the wet with me and three 16 stone men in

Damn, that is a very good time. Mine was on dry but after seing what you wrote I've just watched my HD video and I've seen I drove really slow because of traffic. I stayed there for 2 days wich were saturday and sunday. Unfortunately, saturday it was a local race and we only had 2 hours on that day + one accident. Imagine the circuit opened at 6PM and about 200 cars + 50 bikes entering at once ! It was chaos. Thsi year we will be staying 4 days and hopefully the 2 of them that are not weekend the traffic will be much lighter. Anyone can remember when did the track have the least traffic ? (morning, noon, evening)

Imagine what a proper trackday time will be (if it is dry!). No bikers, vans buses etc, just 150 cars on the day and probably less than half that at any one time on track :happy2:  150 cars may sound a lot, but it only works out at around 10 cars per mile!! I also have the Quaife diff fitted now, so the times should drop anyway. Speed around corners generally is no 10-20mph faster than before the diff and that is what should make the difference :driver: Take off a good 60+kilos of weight from my car too and it should be a little more nimble.

Weekdays in the evening, from around 5-6:30 are the golden times to get on track. All the heros have gone home from the weekend and it's quiet, save for the locals as they know this time's best too.

I've never timed myself and never will.
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: Hurdy on March 10, 2010, 10:43:09 am
I've never timed myself and never will.

You don't have to go for the fast lap time, just make a note of them. You don't even have to do that if you video it as the video does it for you and then you can get your lap times when you download the video. Mike, you have the recent video at Rockingham and I'd like to bet that you have made notes of the lap times from the video haven't you?

I cannot understand why people DON'T note their laptimes. Afterall, how can you tell if you are improving or not unless you compare your times?

Yes, there are people who will try and go just that little bit too far and bin it into the Armco, but surely consistent laptimes show you are doing the lap right, repeatable and hitting those apexes and exit lines.

I'm not worried about being quick or not, a good ring lap for me is nailing every apex and line - I know how quick I'm driving purely from this and you get the "that was a seriously good one" feeling.

I actually know how fast I can get around, as a passenger timed me without me knowing and told me, but I try and put it out of my mind and not even think about it. It's not so much not wanting to know, It's just I'm best not knowing as I've got a competitive streak a mile wide and it'll only lead to me trying to beat it at some stage.

Circuit driving, yes, I know what I can do and analyse it. I haven't looked at Rockingham in terms of times, as I didn't get chance for a lesson and that's what I would have compared, before and after. Oulton I know inside out and focus on my consistency and times in depth (afterwards, I won't look at times on the day)

I'm not against others timing, it's interesting to see.  :happy2:

On a normal touristfarten (sp?) at the 'ring all timing and videoing is forbidden. On the trackday I'm going on they actually promote fixed video cameras and timing is okay as long as it is handsfree, which my Racelogic box is

....My attitude is very much like yours. I never bother to time myself - I just drive within my limits/comfort zone and feel safe in the knowledge that it's not pushing my car to its absolute limits, but I still really enjoy myself and feel I'm possibly a little faster as I learn.

There's always going to be both faster cars and faster drivers in 'lesser' cars. Trackdays and Nordschleife Touristenfahrten days are not competitions, they're opportunities to enjoy some spirited driving and soak up the atmosphere.

....I do see your point, John, and in fact I look forward to possibly borrowing your gizmo and looking at the times etc later. But I'd say that you are very competitive by nature, though not in an irresponsible or aggressive way at all. You definitely like to compete against yourself!

Risks are part of feeling alive. I was an adrenaline junkie in my formative years, abseiling, white water canoeing, skydiving, bungeeeee etc and I guess that will always stay with me, but I know my limits and that is the main factor. When I see people doing things that even I wouldn't attempt, then it invariably ends up in a bad way for them, with me on the sidelines thinking "I knew that would happen!"

I know my limits and the cars. It is just that I personally like the extra buzz of knowing how fast I went as I'm a little geeky that way :ashamed:

Yes! :happy2: Reach your limit under control is a great feeling.

Time your laps around the Ring or not is always the big question.

It depend on people. Some will feel under pressure, others won't.

Anyway, if you go on the Ring to have fun, taking time to learn it, driving properly, then you may be fast.

If you go there to make a fast lap, you will crash.

I thought the FWD record for the full lap was 8'16.9" by an R26R.

yeah mate, the full lap is about 30 sec longer , so on paper, both the rs and meg would be in late 7s. my target is still 8 min 30, but 12 sec off last time there :sad1: may try with 888s, but not sure if will get there this year.

times just fall with puttin in the laps mate, you just hit a point where you stop enjoying it as you chase the times, people dont get out of way so your lap feels spoilt, you end up forgeting your there to have fun!!! would not bother with stopwatch and just enjoy driving it, i never did until my girlfriend timed it without telling me, was a 9min 5sec i think, and i thought i would be in 10s, so ended up trying.

Thanks danishmkvgti

As I wrote here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,16370.msg242964.html#msg242964 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,16370.msg242964.html#msg242964)

My car has been aligned in France at these values:

Front:

Caster     L 7°35'    R 7°41'
Camber   L -2°17'   R -2°04'
Toe         L +0°10'    R +0°10'

Rear:

Camber   L -1°56'   R -1°51'
Toe         L +0°05'    R +0°05'
The car is stable enough at high speed and when you jump on the brakes while cornering.
But still, the rear and turns nicely around corner.

I will go the next time for a tiny less front Toe in for a little bit more aggressive turn-in.
The turn-in seems a little bit sticky right now
As said Tony_danza,  about 0°07' each side.

I will also again reduce rear and camber to around -1°40' instead off -1°50'
Parallel Toe at the rear is too alive and loose for me,  I prefer a little bit more stability.
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: fuscobal on July 27, 2010, 07:21:26 am
How could you set the front camber to such high values since it can't be done with the OEM setup ?
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: laurent.d on July 27, 2010, 08:03:56 am
Hi Fuscobal!

Because I have got 10mm extended Morego wishbones which give 20mm wider track and 1°30' more négative camber. That is why I have got 2°10' of negativ camber.

It doesn't look High-tech but gives more camber than TT arms and works very welll.
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: danishmkvgti on July 27, 2010, 10:31:26 am
As i have had the TT mk2 arms fitted the following settings are on mine:

Old rear hubs are back on, and the car has had it's first wheel alignment. Forgot the pc at home and couldn't remember Laurent D's numbers, so on the top of my head we set it for:

Front:
                   L              R
Caster:     8,38'        8,34'
Camber:  -2,15'        -2,19'
Toe:          0,06'        0,06'

Rear:
                   L              R
Camber    -2,14'        -2,16'
Toe            0,07'         0,07'

The front Camber is to high for the miserable danish roads so i plan on lowering it to 1,3 - 2,0', the steering is very lively, a bit to much for my taste

How can you get -2°2' of front camber and 8°36' of caster withe TT arms???!!!

Normaly you should only get about -1°30' and 7°30'!!!
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: Janner_Sy on July 27, 2010, 07:20:12 pm
standard camber is 10.  add the TT arms and you can run 1.50 negative camber.

that is on a stndard car with no lowering springs.  once you lower the car you gain even more negative camber so i say that his camber is easily achievable with the TT arms.

also ref castor, iirc he is also running the anti lift kit which increases the castor.  its entirely possible that the TT arms themselves could have more castor built into them that stock to make the TT more involving

Ok, but my car was more like -30' as standard and -1° lowered.

And VWR found out that Morego wishbones gives more camber than TT arms, that is why I'm asking the question...

As Vrsy writes i have Walk, and a pretty lowered car which helps on both camber and caster. no doubt you can get a higher camber with the Morego kit,
combined with how much you lower your car. post a picture of your stance and i'll post one of the stance of mine  :happy2:

I'm very surprised that you can get so much camber with TT arms as, if I'm right, at the maximum lenght, they are only 5mm longer than OEM arms, and Morego are 10mm longer.

Maybe Walk kit push more outward the arms compare to SuperPro bushings.

I'll take some pics ant post it.

Hey Laurent, are the Morego wishbones reffered to as "Power Grip Suspension Kit" on their website ? (Price > 495GBP)
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: Janner_Sy on August 04, 2010, 07:55:21 am
yes they are.  essentially they are a normal lower control arm with a welded extension on them to give them the additional camber.

very rudimentary design,  but works none the less.  it is however not adjustable once fitted.

I personaly thing the TT lower control arms would be a better option.  they are lighter, fully adjustable, Oem and considerably lighter(unsprung weight as well which is even better).  The TT lower control arms would be cheaper as well i think :happy2:

the power grip lower arms run a higher camber than the TT arms and if you find your tyre wear is not acceptable, you are stuck with it or will have to swap back to stock.

Hey Laurent, are the Morego wishbones reffered to as "Power Grip Suspension Kit" on their website ? (Price > 495GBP)

Hi fuscobal;

vRSyhas answered your question.

I would only say that for me TT arms don't give enough camber excepted if you add adustable top mount. Then it's the best solution.

I don't have any tyre wear issue with Morego arms and 2°1' of negative camber, I could even go further up to 2°30' for an even tyre wear.

But to be honnest, I am looking for a solution to use TT arms and S3 hubs with Ohlins Coilover and a custom adustable top mount. It woulb be perfect  :jumping:

otherwise, increase front and  of negative camber to about 2° is the best modification on our car. :happy2:

My TT arms are here and will install them next week along with Kumho V70a semislicks on 225/45/17 for the next Hungaroring track day. Will make detailed photos of the work and post them here along with my impressions !

There may have been some miss-information kicking around about the TT arms for some time now.

All the feedback i have read on the forums from people who have had them fitted and reported back on them have achieved over 2 Deg negative camber.

They have a shade over 6mm adjustment on them
If the morego arms are 10mm longer and give 1.3 Deg more camber, then the TT arms will give 0.8 Deg adjustment on the same car.

I have a set of s3 arms in the garage and they are longer than Mk5 GTI arms and give more negative camber(not adjustable)
BMX had some of these fitted and gained nearly 1 Deg from the S3 arms alone.
Also have a set of TT bottom arms and when set to their shortest length they are the same length as the s3 arms to within 1mm or so. Measured from balljoint to bolthole.

I believe the TT arms will deffinately give more than 0.5 Deg more negative camber  :happy2:

Interesting :happy2:

But unfortunatly, almost every body claim differents camber angle.
So we need fact.

I mean aligment data otherwise it is an endless discution. :popcornsoda:

1. 9.24 on my 17'th ever lap (I have it on film). The car had less mods than it has now. So, hopefully I will get a better time next time.

2. video is not allowed but I wonder how TopGear filmed their trip to Nurburring. They had footage from the car! In 2009 there was a big sign that video and taking pictures was not allowed, but in 2010 that sign was removed. There is still a reference of this in the instruction videos shown at the entrance.
It seems that we will be allowed to film our laps during the public session from 2011: "Moreover, every customer will get a 10 % discount off the price of hiring the new onboard camera which, from 2011 on, will allow every fan to capture and take home a bit of Nordschleife feeling." (http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/angebote/driving-experiences/tourist-rides-nordschleife.html)

3. I don't worry about the time. But I use the time as an indicator of how I am progressing. I think that anybody who is only interested in the time will not get to far.

Not my fastest lap by a long margin, but the clearest video of the 'ring.

This lap worked out at 8:21 Bridge to Gantry and 8:47 for the full 'ring circuit.

My fastest is in the very low 8's somewhere.

This lap was done with the spark plugs failing (found out later at Statllers) and a 14 stone bloke in the passenger seat.

Enjoy.

I forgot to post it here, but my best lap time, with road tyres, is 8'19''5 after 2 laps and 6 months far from the track ...and just before my car crash.
I can't prouve it, but I think that with more practice and with better grip later in the season I could be around 8'10'' and even faster.
I think that a sub 8' is manageable with semi slicks tyres.
Maybe the future we'll allow me to experience it.

I don't know anyone with a sub 8 min B to G. However the times below are for standard powered cars for a full lap (not B to G) so you can take off at least 26 seconds fro the time it would take to do the 1.05 miles between the gantry and the bridge. :happy2:

8'23" Golf R = 7'57" B to G by Hans Joachim Stuck
8'30" Scirocco R = 8'04" B to G by Hans Joachim Stuck
8'34" GTI MKVI = 8'08" B to G by alVolante.it
8'37" MKIV R32 = 8'11" B to G by Sport Auto
8'46".4 Scirocco 2.0Tsi = 8'20.4" by Sport Auto
8'49" MKV R32 = 8'23" by Sport Auto

So I'd say a sub 8' B to G is definitely doable.

In my humble opinion you braked to hard for some bends (I am not judging, I am just saying).
Anyway I was a mind blowing lap. Congratulations!

Just seen this. Good video Hurdy, looks like you have a well set up car. It looked like there way barely any body roll and you could really lean on the car. The commitment you took some of the bends by listening to the full throttle made for heart in the mouth viewing, e.g. The very first part of Hatzenbach and Kesselchen.

I unconsciously time myself with an out of site PerformanceBox and then review at the end of the weekend. I haven't got much faster over the last few years but come away equally satisfied as I know when I nail a certain bend because it feels just right.

I once drove a lap trying to chase a time, within the first few minutes I had a mini moment when I slightly overlooked it into a bend and had to edge the car round it. From that point I decided that for me, no more active timing :) I'm happy in the knowledge I have a reasonable pace there.

I think it is better to look at the time only after the lap. I think it is very dangerous not to do this.

I forgot to tell you that I improved my personal best around the Green Hell:

After pretty much a whole day of traffic and bad weather the miracle happened  :driver:. I managed to have a very, very low traffic lap with excellent weather. The track was not quite in the best state because there were a lot of oil spills so I did not push as hard as I could have on those sections. These things made me have my best lap yet. The time is quite hard to measure exactly (there are no line for BTG) but from my calculations I made a little bit better than 9:01:08. It could have been something like 9:00:80 but I will just round that to 9:01. One of my hidden objectives was to have a 8:XX time. This would have been the icing on the cake but it was not meant to be. No worries, I will try again next year.

So, BTG of 9.01 with a 155bhp Golf. I am really proud of the progress but hope to do better next year.

Wow, that is impressive in my book, given the bhp of your car. Really smooth, relaxed driving with good vision looking through the corners. You look like you'd benefit from a CG lock to keep you better planted in the seat, watching you bounce all over the place was funny. I bet that cheap mod alone would knock seconds off your time.
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: rex on December 21, 2011, 07:53:18 pm
I'm sorry but I don't know what CG is  :sad1:...
You are perfectly right... I bounce a lot. The seats have very little lateral support (even if they are Original Sport Seats - like mk5 GTI USA have). And the seatbelt is also not very supportive also... I drove some race prepared cars and I really like the feeling. I sense that I can feel the car better.
I know of these drawbacks and I hope to solve them early next year. That is the plan and I am saving money for that but I'll see how it goes...
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here

The CG lock is this...
http://www.cg-lock.co.uk (http://www.cg-lock.co.uk)
If you have a dig around on the web you can find it for cheaper with group buys on forums etc.

I use one (am not in any way associated with the company) and think they are good, especially when you pull them really tight against you hips, you definitely feel the car more.

I love the way they are considered the GTI sport seats for the Americans (to suit the lardier posteria )

Thanks for the tip! Great tip, BTW... In some of my other video this problem is much bigger especially for the passenger.
But I am planning on installing a full harness in spring so no good for me  :drinking:.
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: Dw1 on December 22, 2011, 09:55:29 pm
A harness is even better, you'll really benefit from that. No need for a CG lock then
I use a four point harness on track, they are fantastic, they clamp you to the seat and you feel hard wired to the car. Worth every penny, a great modification for lower lap times and cheaper than engine mods for the same advantage.

I've just got back from the Ring...

First time in my Golf, not set up for the Ring at all really, only KW V1's, Porsche brakes on the front but crappy pads and old P Zero Pirelli's, the rest of the bushes, drive line is standard. Car is stage 1 ish, 320bhp.

I managed a 8:38 on my 4th lap which I don't think is too shabby, I'm going to do more mods (Roll bars, bushes, tyres etc) and go back to hopefully get faster, with handling mods I think an 8:20 ish is easily possible!

No insurance unless you can afford to pay lots and lots. You have third party insurance if you are in a accident but it is likely that your insurance will be taking you to court for it back.  :happy2:

That was my 4th lap driving around. However I have been 4/5 times and probably done around 20 passenger laps aswell as loads and loads of time on Forza 4. So I know the track a little bit, at least what bend is coming up etc..

Went over with our T5, Scirocco and Q5 a few weeks ago. Didn't time BtoG as we were doing full laps on a DN day. I only did a few laps as we had better drivers than me going out to see what the van could do but in the Scirocco did a full lap - 8.39 and Q5 full lap - 9.12 Loads more in both the cars and me, I'm a bit rusty! My old Ibiza did an 8.03 best BtoG when I had that.

Well, costs may differ because I live in Romania and it is a 1000 mile trip to get to Nurburgring... I have not done the math, but I would say 25 laps of Touristenfarhten + gas + accomodation + trip, would be around 1500 EURO (give or take).
But this trip is well worth it. Even if you may spend this money on mods, I think Nurburgring is a must for all auto enthusiasts so it really is money well spent...

That one I had is the older generation car with 123hp and a 5 speed box, the newer ones have 136hp and 6 speeds.

Neither are fast, it's all about carrying speed, as you know. Bouncing off the limiter at 120mph and barely getting over 100mph up Kesselchen really holds you back!!

Still the most fun I've ever had on the Ring though, you really don't need big power.
Title: Re: Post your Nordschleife lap times here
Post by: rex on October 11, 2013, 06:34:43 am
I also had the older generation but both Rent4Ring and RentRaceCar say they have done an software rewrite and exhaust mod. So they should be about, or over 130hp.
Anyway, 2-3-5 hp don't matter that much. My car doesn't get over 100mph up Kesselchen either

Still the most fun I've ever had on the Ring though, you really don't need big power.
This is what I am telling all my friends who only want M3's or Porsche's or higher hp cars...

Post by: tony_danza on October 11, 2013, 11:36:46 am
Of all the cars I've driven on it, the Swift has been the best, simply because you have to work so hard to find the right line to carry speed. It's amazing how little you have to use the brakes.

It is a lot easier to go fast on a trackday though to be fair, I wouldn't be that committed on TF, so I think you've done well to hover around 9s.
