Title: Mk5 gti bwa engine swap help please :)
Post by: Lowpow94 on June 01, 2020, 08:20:49 pm
I have a 2008 mk5 gti with bwa engine, basically it’s gone bang.
I’m going to pick up another bwa engine on Wednesday, The engine is complete everything straight swap over, but will it run ok? Will it need to be tuned in or anything or just good to go?
Thanks

Providing there’s no other issues which as caused your engine to blow up. It’ll be fine to fit.

Does cost of a used BWA engine of unknown running outweight the cost of rebuilding your blown engine knowing your engine and using stronger components?

When you say "bang" how dramatic was this?
If it destroyed pistons, thrown a rod, smashed valves or simply wore out bearings you need to be very careful using anything taken over from old to the new engine that could be contaminated with debris.

Keep all the sensors from your existing engine together as they are known to be working.

It should just swap out, but its a good time to do housekeeping - Vital to clean out oil pick up, nice to de-carbon inlets, optional but good moral building to paint the block.

Lastly, afraid its more expense, but worth doing with engine out: new timing belt, new water pump, possibly crank seals, assuming its a manual look into clutch wear and also check the dual mass flywheel condition.
