Morning peeps, So I have a Golf GTI Pirelli MK5. Of late the engine light has come on and the car is revving up to 2000 revs when idle, sometimes it comes down, other times it doesn't. I was reading up about this and it was suggested it could it be the PCV valve that needs replacing ? or do I need to take it to a garage? it's driving ok at the moment, thanks in advance

Could be an air leak, i.e. it's sucking in too much because there's a hole in a pipe.

Engine running, take oil cap off.
When you remove the cap there should be resistance from vacuum and the engine revs should falter.
if its easy and no change in engine - PCV blown - easy DIY if its this
