Title: Cambelt/Waterpump recommendation/price southwest
Post by: toerag on August 24, 2020, 05:39:45 pm
My Cambelt+Water pump is due to be done. Just moved into the London/Southeast area had a look round on the forums and people have had it done for as low as 350. My local main dealer has quoted 550 and one independent quoted 660   Does anyone have any recommendations for places to get this done with a rough price of how much it cost you?
Cheers  :drinking:

I can’t help you out in terms of recommendations near you since I got mine done up in northeast but just to give you some idea it cost me about £370 for the cambelt and waterpump service. This was last month so pretty recent.

I had it done at the same time as thermostat and temp sensor changes and other stuff so it’s not exact but will give you some idea of approximate cost.

Sounds pricey.  I had mine done in December at a VW Audi specialist who aren't the cheapest for 395+vat for cambelt and water pump.  When I got quotes at the time the 4 places I tried were all about the same give it take £20

I am also in London and looked the other day to see that VW dealers are now charging £550. Am inclined to get the work done by a specialist out of the city and iirc paid @350 last time it was replaced. Is probably worth having the thermostat changed at the same time on a precautionary basis.

I'm located in South East London and had mine done just after purchasing my 08 GTi earlier this year, think I paid a smidge under £500.

Local specialists I found when researching the area:

VDS Performance, Redhill
TC Garage, West Sussex
Volks Autos, Sutton
VGS, Keston
AD Autotechnik, Newchapel

I've been using VDS in Redhill without issue.  There are closer garages to me on the above list, but VDS is close to a train station which helps when dropping the car off and going to work.

Thanks for the recommendations. l will look into the recommendations posted. I have tried some more independents in my area and 500 seems to be as low as anyone will go.

How much roughly did this cost?

To help narrow down your choice, I got all of the parts from my dealer for £192.  I do the job myself, so free labour, but anything more than £500+ is obviously very steep.  It can be done in 2.5 - 3 hours.

Similarly, a price that's too cheap should raise questions about the quality of the parts used.

Continental now do complete kits with a 60,000 mile guarantee, which is another avenue to explore if price is a factor.

I would also insist on whoever does it replaces all of the stretch bolts where stipulated by VW, which will obviously increase the price as you don't get them in 'kits'.
