Title: SYSTEM LEAN EML - HELP
Post by: BDP on August 26, 2020, 12:26:12 am
Hi Guys,

I have a 2006 GTI which I have owned for a year now. All in all love the car and it has been pretty much reliable (other than a seized caliper).
A few months ago EML light came on whilst cruising on motorway. Garage checked the code and it was 'System too lean at idle.'
Initially cleared the code and it came back a few days later.

I have now had the following done;

-Full major service including new plugs
-Replaced PCV
-Replaced DV

The EML has again come back a few days later and I am running out of ideas! The boost pipe appears fine and the garage checked it and said it was fine when it was in for the service.

Any ideas please????

Thanks

Ben

Might be your charcoal filter or N80 valve.
Replace the N80 valve with a genuine Bosch one and if your happy to wait order the filter from China.

You should get yourself a scan tool, preferably VCDS.  It's an invaluable tool for these cars.

Need to see what the MAF reading at idle is and whether or not plugging the N80 input on the manifold changes that value.   The reason for that test is cost.  A new MAF is £140ish, and an N80 valve is considerably cheaper.  It just avoids firing the parts cannon at the car and hoping for the best.  There is usually a code associated with a faulty N80, usually "Evap system - incorrect flow".

Cheers for the advice. I changed the N80 yesterday and so far all rough idling has completely stopped and car feels much better so fingers crossed that was the solution!
I picked up a Carista OBD which seems pretty good at the moment

Ok, so the anguish continues. Car feels spot on but eml came back on drive to Lake District. Its a System lean code and 2279 leak in intake system code.

Any suggestions on next move?

MAF?
Brake boost pipe?

Thanks in advance
