I know its not a mk5 but we all have to start somewhere and as far as it goes its a good foundation!
Got my Polo GTI about this time last year and have so far had a Revo remap, fitted a BMC panel filter, Forge strut brace and a Bailey DV

enjoying it alot, shes split a boost hose somewhere but once its back on form il be enjoying these rare sunny days!
-
Looking good. Must say i like the wee polo and with that power it must be a fast wee beast!
-
Its my stepping stone to an edition 30! but i must say its a cracking motor. power to weight ratio is what makes it. great on the roads. bad weather - not so good ha
-
Very nice motor especially when your get it running some h&r springs.
Wouldn't suprise me if yours could give a few standard cars on here a run for their money
-
Nice car. I had a Polo GTI 1.8T with Revo before my mk5 Golf GTI and it was fantastic to drive. Really strong mid range and I reckon it'd have given my mk5 a good run for its money even when I had that mapped too.
-
Does the polo have the 1.8 20vt lump or is it a TFSi?
-
Lovely
I wanted one of these in white, must be so much fun being soo small and with all that power :driver:
-
I love the polo gti's, great little car you have there pal :happy2:
-
Does the polo have the 1.8 20vt lump or is it a TFSi?
It has the 1.8 20vt.
I've had 3 versions of this engine, Golf GTI 1.8t, Leon Cupra 1.8t and the Polo GTI. The Polo's is definately the most polished version of the engine out of the box, you can feel where the years of behind the scenes development by VAG went as it's far more responsive than some of the earlier efforts, and Revo said to me when I first enquired about getting mine done that it mapped well. They weren't wrong!
Very lively little cars, much sharper steering than the Golf.
-
Thanks guys, really is a beast on the road (especially if you let your rears get abit low! :driver:) love playing with people that dont realise what it is. Mid range is fantastic and the pull in 5th is superb.
It taken to the remap very well and as of saturday i hope to have a better pic or two its in thursday for this split hose and friday for full clean and wax at Ultimate Car Care in lincoln.
Only drama to note is shell have no v-power!
-
had it fully pressure tested today, only found tiny leaks on a couple of 'o' rings so they were whipped off and replaced but this didnt solve the fluttering noise coming from my engine. Upon a full acoustics session it appears my diverter valve isnt holding under pressure anymore. This is uncool.
But it feels better than it did and the garage that supplied me with the DV is more than happy to replace it if i pop over.
fustrating!! :sad1:
-
Dropped the car at Ultimate Car Care in lincoln on friday and Matt there did a fantastic job. Id let it slip and she'd got dirty. He touched a stone chip or two up for me and a good clean. He uses quality products and gave it three layers of wax. Looks great!

Wednesday getting my DV sorted. Might go forge, as i wanted forge initially but was persuaded on to the bailey and with it giving up the fight so soon im not overally impressed!
-
.....my saga continues. Its not my DV thats packed up apparently, its not the turbo either, its not any hoses to or from anything in the engine.
So after 4 road tests and 3.5hours of constant investigation with, i must add, some mechanics who were spot on guys, they decide its either a gasket between the turbo and the exhaust OR a hairline fracture of the exhaust pipe.
So why not just go further and sort it. Because it maybe be covered under warranty. BUT vw can only fit me in on my busiest days.
However this issue has caused a 30bhp drop from peak but my turbo is point for point the same as my 225 rolling road run so thats healthy........................
I hope.
Just want it fixed!! :sad1:  :sad1: :indifferent:
-
nice motor mate :happy2:
will vw do the warrenty work with it being mapped??
-
apparently they wont be able to see the code. and i wont be telling them about it haha
-
Ello there! Loving the polo. 225bhp? Nice
-
Its not at the moment!! :sad1: but yeah when its healthy again it pulls 225! so much fun. im tempted to lower it and do a few bits and bobs. Buuuuuuut this time next year i can change it and i REALLY like the rolling road print outs from chipped ed30's!
But theres alot of cars out on the market in that price bracket....do like the new impreza's but do i risk rap build quality? i duno long time to think it over! and thanks for your kind words
-
........bring on the battle with vw over warranty
-
Looks good - next time ya see me gimmie a flash or summit
When it's running well does it go as well as i would think ?? :D
-
its certainly does. its alot of fun cant wait to get it back up to scratch!
-
right dropped into grimsby vw and they were a 1000 times more helpful than my local stealership. Basically they have to drop the turbo and exhaust system down to investigate where this noise is coming from. It should be covered under warranty and if not they are gona try and get it on warranty failing that you have to go down the good will path.
Bit nervous bout em dropping the guts out of her! :sad1:
-
just heard (finally, only a week on) that a lose bolt had caused the turbo manifold to move and crack a gasket, or something along those lines so with the dealership having it from tuesday of last week till today (although im yet to pick it up) they still have to put it back together....oh and warranty will cover it !result!
just gutted i missed a nice weekends weather! but with not driving... :drinking:
-
SHES BACK!! all sorted not dropping all the back pressure on the road anymore, but having been in a 1.2 loan car for over a week im over over paranoid about everything now.
has the ecu been updated and the revo removed? i dont think so....but having not driven it for ages im not 100%
getting quite alot of exhaust "barble" and noticed alot of soot on exhaust tips.
What do you guys think? maybe new gasket etc could just take abit of bedding in?? i duno ideas needed!
thanks

Interestingly that happened to my Leon Cupra all three bolts were loose and the manifold was hanging off. Called the roadside recovery and they sorted it at the house.
-
was your cupra remapped? at the house!! haha vw had mine in for a few hours shy of a week! i would feel sorry for the roadside repair guy that had to do that for a week!
-
No that one wasnt mapped
This one was tho

-
ah i just wondered if there were any reasons why this could have been induced...its all good its fixed now.
that a 1.8t?
-
Yep 1.8t APR remapped to 197 bhp - was pretty quick. Along the same lines as you polo i would imagine!
Used to surprise a few folk with it.
-
yeah, cant beat that power to weight ratio! they are cracking lil motors. im chuffed to bits with mine.
this is my first car of any notable stature (the last two being a 1.2 and a 1.4) onwards and upwards! :jumping:
you still got your ibiza?
-
no mate that was replaced by a 54 plate Leon Cupra, Which was replaced by 57 plate mk2 Leon FR TDI, Which was replaced by my current Edition 30!
If you look at the rear quarter panel you can almost make out the reflection of my mates 25th Anniversary GTi!
-
haha vaguely!
Nice! ed30 your favorite? or you got another personal favorite?
theres so much choice when you get to a certain price bracket in hot hatches!

I do like the Ed30 its very very nice!
The wee ibiza was a good toy tho. Had that for over three years which is the longest ive ever kept any car had to sell it when me and my wife bought our first house. She had a brand new Saxo VTR that we couldnt sell (autotrader for weeks and not one single caller) so i ended up trading both in for the first Leon. The plan had been to keep the ibiza as i also had a company car at the time.
I looked at various options before i bought the Ed30 but the golf tickes all the boxes! Especially after its been remapped! Was at crail last sunday and it was getting a fair bit of attention!
-
brilliant stuff. i think, and it is think il look start to look around about this time next year. i really like the mk5 shape so ed30 is a likely contender or something like an s3 but as they are same engine give or take it will probly be a hard choice.
plenty of time to plan and to plot my own downfall! haha and change my mind. always been a vag fan. i mean i am a big car fan in general but cant commit myself to something like an evo or impreza....just think i might be a lil dissapointed in quality on the inside!
-
My shortlist was at the time
Focus ST3 with mountune kit
S3
Scirocco GT
Leon Cupra K1
R32
Ed30
looked at an S3 but ive got a 2 year old and it had the Recaro buckets - there was no way the car seat would have got in the back as it was only a 3 door. Was a very nice motor and in the end my mate bought it for his wife!
Sciroccos were still a bit pricey at the time as there wasnt many used ones about
The K1 was very tempting but i already had the mk2 FR Leon so wanted a change and a better interior.
Focus was nice but couldnt find one in the spec i wanted - White/Black ST3 5 door with Climate and bluetooth!
Toyed with the idea of an R32 loved the sound of that V6 (Mate had two) but the £400 road tax and piss poor economy put me off.
looked at three edition 30's. A black 3 door which was minted but too pricey and had no options, A silver DSG 3 door - Rough s a bag of nails so walked away. Then Mine - 5 door silver, MFSW, RCD500, Highline, Armrest 12k on it. Saw it drove it and thought "Im bloody having this!!" SOLD!
-
i think you made the right choice. focus st's are alright but its not vag quality is it. s3's are the business never been in a leon so i cant comment really but they look pretty sweet. Seeming as uv owned a few you'll know better than me. But as for the r32 if i had more money id do it. Id just have to, to get the kick out of the exhaust tone! Seen kits that take em to 300 odd bhp somewhere (maybe pvw)
but looks like you got yourself a mint deal! I also dont think the day of the deal is dead yet either. seen a couple of good looking cars on web recently, low milage - competitive prices kicking around...hope it stays like that til next year haha!
-
So finally got the car round the having a rolling road as i was CONVINCED it wasnt like it used to be. So after checking that the revo code is still on the ecu it went on the rollers. It only made 160bhp. which is better than standard but not the 225bhp i loved.
After a little fishing around they found that the actuator has spanner marks all over it which would indicate that the dealship having no way of turning the boost down resorted to this.
But the good news is once its re-adjusted everything should be back to full working order...hopefully! :sad1:
-
have you still got this mate? looks sweet ive been looking into these what do you reckon of it? love it?
-
Nice little motor there mate... You from Lincoln I take it?
-
Not seen ya about much Jim, keep lookin
:happy2: :P

Well its been an age since iv been on here and with my thoughts on replacing my much loved Polo theres been little in the way of mods or news. Just the usual services, tyres and plenty of stone chips.
And with the recent bad weather and subsequent salt spreading iv decided that its time the cleaning of the little german go-kart was stepped up.
After some advice and research iv opted to add the following to the garden shed...

I decided to go with a wax that wasnt aimed at a specific colour vehicle due to any future car i might buy...
Not seen ya about much Jim, keep lookin
:happy2: :P
Im about but been keeping quiet!
Nice little motor there mate... You from Lincoln I take it?
I am mate are you?
-
Giving your Polo abit of a spruce up ?? :D
Yeah, Ben (S G Ron) is from Lincoln too, but he's driving a 135i coupe in Alpine White with black wheels and mirror caps and always exceeding clean !!!
-
It needs it. Starting to show a bit of greying under rub strips and stuff (i bought a clay bar but didnt put an image up)
Ah nice i remember you saying a mate of yours had a 135i
I knew some serious cleaning products demanded serious prices but saw some zymol stuff for like £2k!
-
Zymol products aren't cheap huh, take a gander at this :
http://www.vertar.com/zymol/zymol-royale-glaze/
OUCH !
Yeah, my car needs a good going over tbh, stripping back, buffing, polishing, waxing, sealing ..... As its kinda charcole grey not black at the moment ....
Yours will come up a treat once you've had a good session of cleaning !!
-
Well im abroad next week and theres some bodywork issues im having sorted whilst im away so when im back it will be a mint canvas to get spruced up!

honestly, I would not bother with a Forge DV on the 1.8T. Just get an OEM 710N (225hp Audi S3 DV) no ongoing maintance and ours has held up for almost 100000km's.
As for the fluttering sound.
I only just recently found out these motor's have the trouble of turbo bolts coming loose. I'm guessing you have a 2007 version?
I had a guy over here in NZ with the same issue. Ended up replacing the turbo bolts and gaskets. (manifold to Turbo) will confirm in the next day or two when I see him again.
I can't point to this being the solution, but could be something to look at?
Good luck with this, let us know when a resolution has been found?
-
You'll have to let me know what that poorboys stuff is like bud!?
Definitely going to have to invest in the next month or so when I find my new motor. RIP trusty mk5.
Tom, ben - so your both Beemer boys now??

Hello GLIDN, I've only just started posting after a while off and im happy to say that the bailey DV was infact working fine and the noise was, as you've pointed out the bolts coming loose causing a gasket to slip slightly. This gap was allowing the escape of air and causing this fluttering noise. Sounds like you've got a similar problem, the resolution was to drop the turbo and associated components, locate the leaky seal and replace. Touch wood so far no reoccurances!
Thanks for the heads up on the audi DV tho, useful to know! Where abouts in NZ you based?

remapped tho...would tick my box :happy2:
-
I'm in Auckland,
Yeah will be interesting to see if the two polo's had the same issue about the leaking gasket.
still enjoying the car?

340bhp - 510lbs/ft ...... it certainly does :D

Ah nice I work with a guy from Auckland. Yeah drop me a line when you find out, I know mine was running too much boost after the remap. Unfortunately as it was under warranty still the dealership simply wound in the actuator effectively killing the boost. Took alot of time and effort to get it rebalanced. And yeah love it, like a little go kart. Have started looking for a replacement but il struggle to part with her!

you know what your problem is? your all torque....sorry couldnt resist
