The other day I decided to finally pull my figure out and change my headlight housing. There are hundreds of lights on the market and some very modestly priced, yet just lack that BAM!!! that I was looking for. Upon wading through the vast quantities of these, I stumbled on hella’s OEM XENON look headlamps (hella actually supply vw’s factory fitted lights so the quality will be equal to that of the factory, which is always a plus).
These are identical to the ones offered by VW but are for standard H7 bulbsNOTxenon and at £500ish they are not cheap. I put the idea on the back burner until I found a RHD set on ebay for £320 (from a company called tuning fanatics), and lapped them up straight away!
They are “plug and play†(although removing the bumper and about a million screws is required), this is the first time I have tampered with a car, so if I can do it anyone can!
I don't know how to get photos on here, so if someone could lend a hand that would be nice

Hey Guys, thanks for the welcome
Yeah the bottom ones are lights I got hold of. I'll try and sort a pic out at home. They came standard with Orsam Night breakers, but fitted ABD ice blue 6500k bulbs lastnight (they look hot ).
-
Can you put some pics up please? And let us know if you noticed much difference using the same bulb on stanard unit vs the Hella unit thanks.
-
I'll be honest, still having problems uploading photos on here lol. The night breaker bulbs were about a million times brighter and White then the ones that came with the car. The 6500k abd's thAt I have n at the moment are an ice blue composite and don't look tacky. However they're not as bright As the night breakers.
I have only had these bulbs in the new houseing, and can therefore not foment on how these will look in the standard housing from the factory. Yet I would imagine the night breakers will look fine and the abd's a bit sh*te as there will far to much blue all over the place (which I don't personaly like).
I will try to get photos on :happy2:
-
You just need to upload your pictures to PhotoBucket then copy the IMG code and paste it into your reply. :happy2:
-
Would it not have cost only a little bit more to buy some S/H xenons?

Before the lamps (notice the yellowish tinge in the fogs, thats what the main beam were like)

After replacing the main headlight housing (note the lights arn't on)

On the left is the Orsam Night Breakers, and the right ABT 6500k's ice blue. (this was taken on my phone, so is a bit crappy so i'll get another couple of photos later). The abt's are much bluer than the night breakers (although this isn't entirely obvious from the photo)

-
S/H xenons are like £500 arn't they? and also I heard they are very fiddley to put into non xenon cars???
I may be wrong however.
This is one of the reasons i started this thread as there is next to no information out there on this issue :sad1:
-
The search button is your friend dude! :happy2:
There are dozens of threads on here about the various headlight options. However, yours do look very good!
-
and legal too
-
Legal Schmegal! :booty:
-
Lol, yeah maybe should done some more thorough research.
They are totally legal, fit the purpose, so am a happy bunny
what would you guys advise in terms of remaps? And do you know how badly they impact the insurance in the uk? :drinking:
-

nice one on the pics dude.
You got any pics with it shining against a wall? How is the output?
-
I can grab a few pics later on the wall (however they will only be the ABD's Not the night breakers, as they are now out of my car).
Output, - night breakers white light at night and yellowish during the day but VERY bright (whiter and brighter than factory standard).
- ABD's Blueish tint (very similar to xenon) during the night, and a whiteish blue during the day (again very similar to Xenon). These are Not as bright as the night breakers, but similar/better than the ones factory fitted.
Suppose it boyles down to what you want from them, style or vision lol. Hope that answers your question.
-
Thanks.
Just wanted to know if there was a much bigger difference or not.

Nice one dude, thanks for the pics.
Looks like the same as my nightbreakers on the standard headlight set
-
They look very similar to the xenons. But they're not illegal like those fake HIDs?
-
Lol, yeah am impressed with the out come. The bulbs were only £12 lol, so will probably last two mins (I'll post when they go out). Aparently they has xenon gas in there and hence shine at 6500k, but don't know how much truth is behind that
-
Could be very missleading when buying a car - thinking it has Xenon's when it doesnt - not a complaint to you, just a comment as some people search after a GTI with Xenon's.
-
True. But not planning of selling her any time soon
Does anyone have suggestions for fogs to match?
-
It wasnt a dig at you - just more as options like this become available as a buyer you have check out these things.
-
Don't worry buddy, knew it wasn't a dig :happy2:. I couldn't agree more, I try and steer clear of s/h modded cars (never know how they have been driven or how well the instilation is etc)
-
Hi there, with regards to the fitting of these headlights, is there any extra work to be done apart from popping the bumper out, and removing the headlights in situ? I ask because i have found an ad on e-bay from the same vendor- tuning fanatics, and it states the headlights come with bulbs (helpful) and actuators. I am wondering what the actuators do, and if they require any power source independant from the bulbs, and if they need to be attached/connected to anything else in or on the car?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200579708297?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
This is the link (hopefully) to the ad.
Any help gratefully received
Steve :happy2:
-
At a guess I would say the acutators are for the leveling which should be connected when you plug the headlight in, if further wiring is required I wouldn't touch them.
-
Interesting.. didnt realise you could get copies that were so close to the oem look
My guess is the actuators are to flip up the mirror to make them bixenon (ie when you pull the main beam on my oem xenons the mirror flips up to give full beam xenon along with the main beam lamps also firing)
-
has anyone used these? they do look very OEM, although not sure of the quality! Would be nice to see some pics of them on!
-

Well I doubt there would be a quality issue with them being hella lights. Hella stuff is regularly used as OEM anyway. They probably just had loads left over and decided to sell them on their own :)
I'm trying to convince my mate (oxygen) to get them and then we will see what they are like but I wouldnt have thought they are any worse quality than the oem vw ones and infact they are better because you dont HAVE to use the OEM xenon bulb (which isnt actually as bright as the HID kit i had on my old car)

I'm not so sure, as they are only 'xenon look' with a halogen bulb fitted in the projector unit.
-
I've got a set here that I'm going to fit soon.. Quality is top notch - absolutely OEM. If you do buy a set make sure you get RHD versions. Most sellers are stocking LHD versions.
They look just like the Xenons, but have an H7 halogen bulb behind the projector. I reckon a set of HID bulbs would go in there should you fancy some?

They look totally OEM...
Im very tempted to get them and sell my oem ones and then I can run my own HID kit which will be brighter.
-
oh how i wish they made a set of these for the 8P
-
they do look really good but for 320quid are you better not just actually buying xenon headlights from the for sale section in here for an extra 100pound? they are genaraly around the 400 mark. just my opinion
-
I paid under £300 from my supplier, and these are brand new, which is a bonus for me. I did consider S/H Xenons, but then the idea of mucking about with looms, fitting washers and levelers etc made the job a lot bigger and more complex. These Hellas are plug and play and with some decent bulbs as the OP stated, are a big upgrade it would seem.. Almost as good as Xenons!
In some way's these are cheats way to having that Xenon look.. I guess as the name suggests! :innocent:
-
Ive had this kit on a couple of cars and its been flawless and actually brighter than then oem xenon

Where did you get yours from? I'd be interested in these, seems to save on the hidden extra costs you get with fitting OEM xenons and having to sort out levelling etc soon adds up!
-
Me too, where can you get them for less than £300 please?
Does nobody in the UK stock these?
-

I might just become another guinea pig!
I like the look of these and although they're not OEM, they've gotta be worth a punt to save the hassle of fitting S/H OEM ones. :happy2:
-
I'll speak to my contact folks.. He's in Germany, but can post almost next day. Maybe we can look at a group buy?
-

Yes please! I'd be up for a set, don't know if he can sort something decent bulbs too?
-
All I want to know is weather they look like xenons both on and off!!
-
They look JUST like Xenons off.. if you put in Xenon bulbs, they'll look like them on too! They come complete with a full set of decent Philips bulbs and full fitting instructions. They are completely plug and play.
I'll do an install guide when I fit mine, but trust me, it'll be easy peasy. Just waiting on prices for a GB, and I'll update the GB thread when I know more.
If anyone wants to come and look at mine once done, I'm happy to show them off? Especially you Baldwined30 as i think you're pretty local?
-
Where are you based?

Essex :star:
-
You should be able to sell 10 sets easily enough I'd imagine!
Group buy, group buy! :jumpmove:
-
Do you know yet if they are bi xenon (ie the mirror flips up inside the fish eye when you are on main beam)
-
Are the pictures on first picture with the abd xenon ice blue bulbs?
-
Where in Essex? I'm Chelmsford

Ive got genuine Xenons and i cannot tell the difference by just looking at them. Very impressive but @ £320 i guess they should be!
Imo its definately worth paying that little bit extra to get the real deal - mine cost me £375 + £50 for the Kufatec adaptors.
Best mod ive done, you can beat the oem Xenon crisp brightness
But i guess its just down to personal preference
-
True, but unless you have levelling and washers, will they not fail an MOT this time next year?
-
I think you may be right! I would be very unhappy if I'd spent the best part of 400 and they didn't look right! I shall wait! As we all know, we want the OEM look and the bulbs on these just won't look right! I may be wrong!
-
True, but unless you have levelling and washers, will they not fail an MOT this time next year?
Not you dont need them to pass an M.O.T - mine passed last month.
You can alter them manually on the headlight itself, which is what i did.
Its a fair point about the Washers and levelling though - ideally you'd want to have them but ive not got them on mine and ive had them in 18 months now with no problems, never been flashed by other drivers even with 5 passengers and luggage.
Im not knocking the Hella ones because i think they're excellent, something i considered myself but im glad i did go down the genuine xenon route.
:happy2:

The changes aren't happening until Jan '12:
There are to be some changes to the MOT test from 1st January 2012 which are being introduced in response to European Commission Directive 2010/48/EU of the 5th July 2010 and which will effect those with aftermarket HID headlights and remapped ECUs:
4.1.4 Compliance with requirements:
(a) Lamp, emitted colour, position or intensity not in accordance with the requirements
(b) Products on lens or light source which obviously reduce light intensity or change emitted colour
(c) Light source and lamp not compatible
4.1.5. Levelling devices (where mandatory):
(a) Device not operating.
(b) Manual device cannot be operated from driver’s seat.
4.1.6 Headlamp cleaning device (where mandatory):
Device not operating.
For anyone with a remap, section 6.1.9 may be relevant.
6.1.9 Engine performance:
(a) Control unit illegal modified.
(b) Illegal engine modification.
(by 'illegal', it is assumed that they mean changed/programmed differently from OEM specifications)
There will also be a new check on the general condition of the wiring:
4.11. Electrical wiring
(a) Wiring insecure or not adequately secured.
(b) Wiring deteriorated.
(c) Damaged or deteriorated insulation
and on the function of airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner systems:
7.1.4. Safety belt Pre-tensioners:
Pre-tensioner obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.
7.1.5. Airbag:
(a) Airbags obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.
(b) Airbag obviously non-operative.
7.1.6. SRS Systems:
SRS MIL indicates any kind of failure of the system.
Some of the above won't be popular with some around here I know, but VOSA have confirmed that the necessary changes to the MOT test schedule will be introduced and from 1st January 2012 vehicles that fall foul of the new requirements will fail the test.
I think the biggest change is that they will now be able to detect re-maps and car will fail the MOT if this is the case.
I assume that this has been brought in because a lot of people who re-map their cars don't inform their insurance company
-
Im not sure why everyone is getting so hung up on the 'genuine' oem ones.
I bet the oem ones were made by hella anyway so they already had all the tooling set up so they made some after market ones with regular bulb holders too.
As I said... im half thinking about getting some of these in replacement for my oem ones as then i can run my own hid kit rather than relying on the OEM xenon bulbs which arent as bright as the HID kits ive previously used.

What the.... when did this get announced...
so any car with a remap with be an automatic mot fail?
-
Ive read a lot on this and the general consensus is that this applies to Factory fitted Xenons i.e the regulations for new cars
Retrofitted ones still dont need auto levelling & washers - apparently!
I think this is to try and stop the HID kits that dont have the projector beams and dazzle people.
I guess only time will tell - theres been many a debate on that subject on various forums!!!
As for the remap thing, i think thats a load of cobblers. It would mean that all mot test centres would have to ECU reading equiptment for all the makes of cars & i dont see why a remap makes a car unroad worthy!!! And imagine all the companies like revo, Bluefin, Superchips, Shark etc etc - can you really see the goverment putting companies like that out of business :scared:
-
Big dicussions regarding aftermarket HIDs on Briskoda, I have them fitted in my vRS (which have projector units as standard) but as of January next year mine will be an MOT failure because I don't have self leveling or headlight washers. There was also some piece of legisaltion found by another member which further stated that OE xenons fitted after market, even if the levelers/washers were included would be a failure, so based on that only factory fit is allowed. I'd like to see an MOTer that could tell the difference or actually be asred to check.
Me, I will simply swap my HIDs for halogen at MOT time then refit the HIDs after it passes - not that I endorse that sort of activity......... :innocent:
The most infuriating part is they are introducing all these ridiculous new rules but at the same time looking to make the test bi-annual!! :stupid:
-
Do they ping on like xenons
-
Do they ping on like xenons
The pinging on is due to the bulbs. If you fit HID bulbs, they will, if you leave the Halogens in, they won't.
UPDATE on potential GB - I have a price for 3 sets (under £300 delivered) Just waiting on a price for 10 sets, should we get enough interest.
Also, my contact tells me the original OEM Xenons are made my Hella, so these are exactly the same as the OEM Xenons in construction, just with Halogen bulbs.
Also, regarding them having a shutter (being bi-halogen/xenon). I'm not sure from looking at them, sorry. I will only know once i've fitted them and can hear the click on switching to main beam. Sorry :ashamed:
-
This is getting interesting!!!!
-
Yeah, good work!
£275 sounds good, lol!
-
If they are xenon look, I would very much doubt they would have a bi-xenon shutter. Hella are one of the main OE light manufacturers for quite a few vehicles. When they make a lamp that is intended for sale as a patent part they change something insignificant for example, on the standard halogen lights the dipped beam shrowd is a VW logo, when the part is produced as a copy, they fit a lattice design to give the VW effect....does that make sense? I had both a copy and an OE lamp, both made by Hella and apart from the logo, they were identical.
If a group buy comes up for these at a competitive price I may be forced to raid my bank - again! :surprised:
-
I would love to see these against the OEM factory version!!
-
I have found these ones for £128, Hella ones too!!

That says set!! Not for GTI though, they have chrome surround

Hi HKP can you keep the forum updated on your gb please as i would defo be interested in a pair of these lights, seems to me that they will soon overtake the demand for oem xenon lights specialy as they are a lot less hassel to fit and legal from the start. well done on your work in finding them

Very interested in these if the group buy goes ahead.

Good spot that. Other members have these and paid £180+, although they are not a copy of an OE light they seem a good choice if you want projector units and the helis bar (can be used as a DRL) tbh I like them with black inners so would not bother.
-
Sweets2 has these on his Jetta
When they are off, next to my bros edition 30 lights, you can't tell. I mean, I can't tell, and Simon can't tell.
When they are on you notice because the temp of my hid kit is a lot more blue than the factory xenons, and my lights don't self-level. You'd only notice that if you had a set next to you tho - there is only a subtle difference in colour.
The kit i installed is a basic kit, not a bi-xenon kit...
-

I do..
I figure you guys will want some pics then? I gotta sort my headlamp aim out, i got it completely wrong on the drivers side so its pretty low (fortunately).
Will get some pics and post em for ya.
Totally oem look imo.
-
You would think they could just make them with the black innards and the chrome domes, charge another £20 and make a killing.
You are right they don't look as good but £400 is a lot of cash.
-
Interested!!!!!!!

UPDATE:
I popped over to Strictly Dubs in St Lawrence, Essex today to get the Hella Xenon Looks fitted.
You are all familiar with these horrible Halogen, reflector based, 1990's tech stock lights. At least they are darkened I spose.. :congrats:
The Hella manual suggests removing the bumper to fit, but Paul said it just needed unclipping at the sides and the grill removed to allow access. He was right - these boys don't waste time!

One light out! (4 bolts and a plug)

..and one new super cool Hella Xenon look light being fitted in!!

Repeat on the other side, put the car back together, and job done. Total time to do the whole job was less than an hour, but like I said, these guys know Golfs, so can work around them very quickly. I lent a hand where I could, and reckon I could do it myself now easily, now I've seen how to do it.
Oh, and you don't need to take the fog grills out, that was done so we could get a trapped bug out of my offside front fog lens!!
-
haha looks exactly like mine now with the plate off and the plate holes showing.
So what are they like? did you fit a HID kit or just normal bulbs?
Do they have a mirror that flips up to allow main beam on the xenon unit?
-
Deffo need to get a set of these bad boys! Have we got any more word on a group buy and when we can place the order? I probably can't afford a set until next month unless I put them on a credit card.....
-
Looking good HKP :congrats:
-
Hkp how much did you pay for your lights and where did you source them from they look awesome on the car you really couldnt tell the difference from oem xenon lights fab job
-
I got them from a mate in Germany, I'm trying to sort out a GB, but I'm waiting back to hear on a firm price. I paid about £280 delivered for mine (mates rates!). I'm also working on a supplier here in the UK who is trying to source them. Apparently they are not easy to buy due to some licensing requirement from VW, not sure exactly the details though.
Regarding a mirror for the main beams - no I don't think so. I put some of the + 80% brighter/whiter bulbs in mine and they are very very bright. The difference is like night and day (excuse the pun). The cut off it much sharper, the beam more directed, and further down the road, and you get that kind of bluey/rainbow effect as you catch the top of the beam. So glad I did this mod, not just for the cosmetic nature, but for the effect on my night vision too!
-
I've got these too.
Very pleased with them, as said by someone else above, if you put brighter bulbs in them they are brilliant.

I also want to change my o.e.m. halogen headlights with o.e.m. xenon headlights or maybe the 'xenon-look' hella's, discussed in this topic (looking at the price).
But another question, not discussed yet:
If you put o.e.m. Xenon headlights in an o.e.m. halogen mk5, you need 10 to 12 pin adapter connectors (from kufatec).
This is because the Xenon headlights have a 12 pin connector and Halogen headlights have a 10 pin connector.
The extra pin(s) is used for the xenon shutter (activated when using the high beam).
If you connect the extra wire (provided in the kufatec adapter) you can use bi-xenon, otherwise you only have the h7 halogen's next to the xenons for high-beam.
What about the Hella 'xenonlook' headlights?
Are the 10 pins?
So plug and play on a o.e.m. halogen mk5?
No option to control a shutter for bi-xenon when you install an aftermarket xenon ballast/h7 bulb in the hella's?
-
They are 10 pin connectors mate (i.e. plug and play)
-
They are 10 pin connectors mate (i.e. plug and play)
Thanks!
And what about the bi-xenon mode? Possible to control shutters? (Or are there no shutters in the Hella's?)
Read about some sort of 'atuators' included with the Hella's???
-
No shutters I can see mate. The actuators control the height from inside the cabin I guess?
-
Do you need extra actuators for that?
Isn't it possible to control the height manual, with the standard height-adjustment-button in the car? (In halogen spec mk5's)
Going to look for a good hella seller/price in The Netherlands.
Suggestions?
-
Yep, nothing on the height adjustment changes from the standard Halogens. What I meant was that 'actuators' might be the little height adjustment motors in the headlights, that was all...
-
Thanks 'HKP'!
What H7's would be the most stock xenon look in the Hella's? -> Osram Nightbreakers or things like ABD Ice blue 6500k's or GP Thunder Xenon look 5800k?
Ebay Netherlands don't show the Hella's.
What's best for me? Germany?
-
Hi hkp, any news on the group buy? I might be interested in a set for my GT Sport
-
+1 very interested in the gb update to m8
-
definately interested in these aswel!! :happy2:
-
My UK supplier is being slack! I'll poke him again. :fighting:
I can get them from Germany (RHD versions - not the ebay ones), but the GB would be harder to organise (and more $).
-
Any update on this please mate?
-
Hi Russ. Yeah I'm gonna give up on he UK supplier for a gb. I'll talk with the guy in Germany again, let he mods know here, then post details in the gb forum.
-
+1 very interested :happy2:
-
very nice mate!
-
Okey dokey. I'll drop the mods a message explaining what is what and then hopefully we can get the GB going..
-
Any luck with this group buy? If it works out I will buy a set. :happy2:
-
Bumped +1 here
-
I'm looking for a pair ATM so I would be interested
-
Hi guys, unfortunately the GB cannot go ahead as the supplier is not based in the UK thus is contrary to forum rules. Sorry! HKP

Is there any significant performance gains with the projector types, whilst still using H7's?
Anyone got a side by side night time picture, for example?

Are these the same lights as the OP? One of my headlights actuators seems to have broken, so could be the ideal time to get some of these

Nice pics WT. Im sure with a bit of tweaking that beam could be improved upon.
-
I can only see two white plastic adjusters one up and down and one left and right. does any one who has these know how to make these better?
-
If you take to an MOT place i'm sure they would set them up the best way, I've just ordered a set of these hoping that they set up ok :surprised:
-
They look excellent mate, +1 on the alignment, HID bulbs require slight adjustment over halogens, iirc it's something like 1.2 degrees!
-
These are the finished result after being setup by a garage
-
um that beam patterns hideously wrong...
kickups on the far right and far left shouldnt really be that high...
open up the back cover of the headlight and look around where the bulb goes in and you should see some levers which adjust the shield so you can flatten the cut off better...
-

Me too. Fitting them and then appointment with MOT man :happy2:
I nearly bought the LHD ones :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: That would have been expensive.
-
hugh jass would you be so kind to take a pic of your beam pattern when there set up and post it pls :happy2:
-
For you anything :happy2:

here's a easy video to follow if anyone is thinking of doing it DIY
note: I might have to buy some hella lights they look great..

If you look at the back of the case below the bulb cover for the main beam, you will see a small hex bolt sticking out slightly. I think it is a 4mm hex (from memory)You use the white side to side adjuster to align the beams to straight ahead, and then the up/down one to level both main and dip beam. The hex adjuster is used to adjust the main beam (i think) up and down independantly.Basically you do both beams simultaneously for height, and when the dip is correct, then the main can be adjusted to suit via the hex adjuster. I hope this makes sense and helps.
Pagey, the lights i saw were for a LHD golf- sorry mate. Tuning fanatics are still the cheapest i have found....

Lights have arrived in one piece or should that be two pieces. Car goes into the bodyshop

-
Are these genuine lights, or a copy ? Who are Hella ? I may have to research!
They are good for the price compare to real oem ones.
