Title: MDI retrotfit questions
Post by: Rob GTI on March 17, 2010, 09:56:57 pm
I've got a A rev RNS510 with updated firmware to B. Can I install the MDI and get it operating correctly (with coding), I see a lot of conflicting info saying that you can't run MDI on an A model even with upgraded FW!

Whats a good price to get one for (the glovebox type)? I see a lot on the bay for £140ish but without the ipod lead which is roughly another £20.

Whats the p/n and RRP for the kit, maybe I could get one from VW with 10% off?

Cheers.

5N0057342 price is around £140 plus VAT from the dealer but requires a RNS B or higher, some sites are saying a firmware upgrade for a A will resolve the issue

VW are saying not compatible with the following;
1T0057680
1T0057680A
7L6057690
7L6057690A

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.my-gti.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fmdi_5n0057342_glovebox.jpg&hash=d0bd62a913de72fd7b289475bf7b700844e36180)

The ipod/usb/mini usb leads are all extras

There is no coding unless you want to add 2E to the can gateway list for completeness

There is also 5N0057342A (£170 plus VAT) which appears to fit in the glovebox  with the included storage shelf but looks like the armrest version (complete with looms but no ipod/usb lead)

However it also says not compatible with

1T0057680
1T0057680A
7L6057690
7L6057690A

I prefer the look of the non-shelf MDI as it takes up less space. So the 6 million dollar question is has anyone installed MDI into a FW updated A revision 510?

Also is the armest version supposed to have the same compatibility issues with the A version of the 510?

I know a member over at vwnavi who has fitted the armrest version to his A upgraded to firmware 1100 without issues, he didn't fit the unit to his armrest but into the cubby hole under the steering wheel with a hdd

http://vwnavi.com/showthread.php/showthread.php?s=4a3bd75482e9a229448645ce3a39e2a0&p=35032#poststop (http://vwnavi.com/showthread.php/showthread.php?s=4a3bd75482e9a229448645ce3a39e2a0&p=35032#poststop)

Don't think the armrest version comes with the cable between the MDI and the RNS, Kufatec sell the cable loom

Well thats good to know at least I can resort to that option if all else fails. Still I would like to to have the glove box version to save space.

Surely though the wiring must be the same on the armrest and glovebox versions with the only differences being the mounting point?

I thought you'd done yours Rob?

If I can do it, you can
Just remember when retrofitting, to put some sort of soft cloth around all the plastic bits cause no matter how careful you are, you'll scratch something and I hope it's not your RNS-510 like it was for me  :sad1: :stupid:

The reason I haven't done it sooner was because I was waiting for you to finish yours, but after your misadventures I thought the glovebox version might be a safer bet.

What version RNS do you have ?

 :signLOL:

I doubt you'll have as much trouble, just bear in mind it's fiddly but then not much isn't with a retrofit.
Glove box is undoubtedly easier I'd say, but your preference will decide whether you go for that.

I've no idea which RNS-510 I have tbh?
How do I find out?

The last letter of the part number printed on the reverse of the unit will let you know, i.e A or B.

or

Is your volume display bar at the bottom or middle of the screen if in the middle it is an A if at the bottom it could be an A with updated FW or a B.

Volume display when called appears dead middle of the screen?...

I won't be able to get to the back on the unit till tomorrow, weather dependent Rob.

The other indicator is if you go to the balance / fader screen you will see an aerial view of the inside of the car, if you don't you've got an A revision model same as me.

I updated mine with files you can get here:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,7154.0.html.

Its a worthwhile update.

I don't think mine has the display of the car in the tone settings? I'll check once more.

Thanks for the link to the files. I'm downloading now.
How do you apply them?

Burn them onto a CD as a data disc, verify then put into your RNS ......simples, full instructions in the thread I linked to.

I have not seen this before. Good find!

I like it a lot. But I'm a little concerned about the storage shelf. Or does this utilise the shelf where the handbook is meant to sit???

No idea, that how it shows it in the VW ETKA accessories catalogue

for golf MK5?

The hand book, shelf isnt that big, from the look of that picture there would already need to be a shelf in place in the glovebox to take it, as the MDI is sitting inside a much larger plastic box, which is where the 6 cd changer would fit in a passat.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dealershipaccessories.com%2Fstores%2Fimages%2Fitems%2Fitem_37085.gif&hash=b008685c76ba68b4cd56769002d866c9963cd356)

So think you would have to do alot of work to fit the full MDI in the golf glovebox.

Think this will need a little more research. Starting with PR numbers.

I'm not a fan of having my iPhone flying round the glovebox though.

Checked with two VW garages and both said that although the (A revision) part is listed on ETKA, they cannot order it on their ordering system. The part number is not found on their ordering system.

So either I'm thinking:

- Not for UK market

OR

- Brand spanking new and not got here yet

Wouldn't a simple fix address that Pazz, like a 20p bit of velcro or similar contraption so it's held firmly in place, but means you can solve the secure problem and don't need to quest for this part that VW won't do?

Pazz if you have the correct arm-rest I would just go for the MDI in that location as you will then be able to secure the ipod in the cubby hole, if not the standard MDI retro for the glove box would involve less work than retro-fitting the shelf and MDI.

My guess is that the part Camel found in ETKA is for cars that didnt have the arm-rest cubby hole before they bought out the MDI only unit.  And for Passat owners who wanted to replace their 6 CD units.

I don't have the two section arm-rest cubby hole. Mines just one big section which is fairly useless to be fair - I believe this is what they fitted to the later models???

Being a fan of doing things first I just though I'd give it a go!
