Ok well here we go
i bought this car back 2003 from the very first issue of ultra vw magazine, i was on the look out for another bug and this one i liked the look of :rolleye: Its a 1956 RHD oval beetle
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2Ffamily_0044.jpg&hash=a242ac61c2495c24c6a501383784b85ff0b39205)
as soon as i saw the for sale add i was on the phone to the seller (2 0clock in the aft) and said if its still for sale i will come down now to look :rolleye: so a quick trip to bank to get the ££££ out and me and a mate set off down there to see it and got there around 11 oclock at night :stupid: and i fell in love with it from the sec i looked at it :ashamed:, the deal was done and we set off home and i got as far as sheffield and the gearbox went bang locking up the rear end at 70mph :scared: (oh they have no seatbelts) and i just missed a lamp post :driver: :scared:.I got on the phone to the AA and had the car took home to find out the box had gone bang and snapped a drive shaft in half :rolleye: to say i was lucky is a bit true. The gearbox was pulled out and another crap one fitted that had a whine but it got the car moving to its first dub show.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2FDSCF0014-vi.jpg&hash=bd4f0d096da6d57263a765841138da366cd67412)
I was lucky that we were moving to a new house that had a big garage :rolleye: ie i can get 3 cars in there  and so the strip down started :rolleye:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0313.jpg&hash=1b1ee09a22c7e9f753011301eba42ef3ee89612c)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0317.jpg&hash=e4ced319dd2dbce3ac81b4728b42b42787a761bc)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0325.jpg&hash=9af624e4e6e7004c6eeb87756c052911fd5c851c)
and new part part bought
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0332.jpg&hash=d3f15e95a603609be255093eb96b89bdb27b2d5d)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0330.jpg&hash=a2d76cd48a125e5187f3c1867b051e85e91e9bba)
and i also bought an engine from the states but will get in to that later :rolleye: and while i was on holiday in the states i picked up a new pro street gearbox for the car and then had to wait some time for the new race/short axles to be made
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0403.jpg&hash=70314ca879d735e8a753d4c907a85e38cef55a0b)
on solid mounts
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0404.jpg&hash=6f9483e9eec839ea1ce455dfd39ceef2858f6db8)
i got the car back to a rolling car that i could move about :rolleye: and got the engine in and a few other bits on the car to get it to this
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0438.jpg&hash=e15059b274b0f5397e718906d481730b2cfd4396)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0433.jpg&hash=65002400bf0f107601e5356e700a3e9c0595778b)
and thats about all i did as we had our first child so it got put on hold for a while :rolleye: so after a few years of waiting i heard a mate of mine had opened up his own grg again doing aircooled stuff so i asked him if would like to do it? he said yes bring it up and i will start on it :rolleye:, so me and jhtrophy took the car up on a mates flat bed truck :scared:. The car was stripped back down of everything to make sure all was well with the car and the parts to find out the engine that i had bought years ago 2332cc
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F100_0411.jpg&hash=386c3208a0ec69da8318e6cbd84063b54092170e)
was not the best of thing :ashamed: ie heads were crap and would never flow like i needed
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2FP1030039.jpg&hash=c5da7795315842464b72dbdee3f8fe7ee941a291)

u get the idea :rolleye:
the cam was not very wild at all but there was some good stuff in there like a forged crank and a few other bits :rolleye: and so after a good chat with my good mate Mat at vw racing who knows these engines inside out as thats what he did for a living ie built em we got these bits in last week for the new 2332cc mtr

there is lots and lots more to come with this car and i will add pics when i next go up to see it ie when we get to fire the engine up in the car as it will be run on a test bench first and have the 48 dell carbs set up and then we can set all the electric ignition on the car when the mtr is in

-
Nice bus mate  mine was a 1960 small window, small back lights and its living near to me now and has had a full resto
Is it painful having it so close and seeing what has been done to it?
-
No i made a grand on it with it just sitting in my grg
-
Haha, I can appreciate that! I sold mine for £2500 and made a thumping loss, really should have held onto it but I wanted to move out! Even as a real shed it would be worth a hell of a lot more now!!
-
yeah about 6k up now easy :sad1:
-
Very nice mate, got a good looking frame to start on.
Though I would like to see it being restored to an original look. I had a 72 bug that was Cal look, the wife had a 76 model Superbeetle, and the father in law recently sold his 69 Karmann Cabrio that was restored too.
But really do think that with the oval rears being quite rare that these should be done the way they came out of the factory (of cause that is just my opinion, but could eaily buy a cheap nice model if you just wanted to soup it up for the tracks)
-
I get what u say mate and it one reason i will never mess with the body as its just how it should be and if this car was all stock when i bought it i would never have messed with it and have driven it every once in a while and taken it to shows, but i was messed with when i bought it so now its getting the best i can give it
-
Thanks guys  and John its called character
Matt - gorgeous car!
I've always dreamed of owning a black Oval. My dad bought a white 1970 1500 that had it a lamppost - I was 7 at at the time and I was small enoigh to fit in the front bonnet to help align the lock mechanism!
If you know black is the best colour for a duc whay did you buy a white one :signLOL:
-
Looks awesome Mat, never been into them but can see why you would be
-
same here not really into the old beetles but that look s pretty cool mate :happy2:
i like the new ones , would love an RSi kitted one ! am i sad ?
-
Well the engine is done  just need some new rocker cover(the black covers on the left and right of the heads) as the ratio rockers are too big for the stock rocker covers :rolleye:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2Fb22b4ea5.jpg&hash=296667b8efcf97ee5a5586f1daff45dac6999c03)
this is just the bottom end of the engine and the rest has now been built up on the bench and the oil cooler on top is just for testing and so is the distributor as its got a massive one going in .Getting there now :rolleye:
-
with that sump dude are you not running a brace bar under the block now or are you just having intermediate? I though you were full flowing too, seeing that cooler top mounted and no take offs on the current rocker covers that youre not then? And wheres the welded and balanced fan?
questions question questions
-

defo running a brace bar and those rocker covers are just on to keep crap out of the heads as i have new rocker covers now that are flowed and that goes to an oil cooler under the car + they go into a breather tower too once all the top part of the mtr is built up with the carbs and the fan shroud with the welded fan
-
so when does it live?
-
Ace.
It's been a long time since I played with a flat-4, has the trend for using Porsche fans gone then?? I thought they were the shiznit?
All this sun shining and my Dad's GP buggy is begging to be hooned. Anyone know where I can get some Banana Splits costumes?
-
so when does it live?
this week or next i hope :popcornsoda: :rolleye: it needs running at 2500rpm for 20min at first to bed the cam in and then he oil will be dropped and new stuff put in and then its off for its mot :scared: it should pass its all new :rolleye: then once its home i need to drive it for 100miles and then drop the oil again to get rid of any of the engine build up gunk and then its done
to say i am a little excited is an understatement
-
i can smell the excitement from here
very envious, i remember when mine started to reach the final build stages... happy days
-
Completely missed this thread Mat. :ashamed:
Your enthusiasm for all things cars is amazing, your like i was age 7. :drinking:
I loved this car when i was up at yours, the paint is really old school, its a really dark black.
More updates please mad man. :popcornsoda:
-
Indeed, engine must be ready by now? :popcornsoda:
-
Thanks TC yeah I am mad and yes the engine is in and everything is ready to be run this week :jumpmove: and once it's up and running it's mot time :scared: but then again it's all new from the front to the back now. But I get told it's running you guys will be the first to know and you know VC u will get a giddy text :P
-

-
oh hell yeah
-
best thing is the guy who has done all the work has said he has enjoyed doing it so much and the engine guy said the same about the engine so thats the main thing for me as that says its been done with lots of  and enjoyment but i cant wait :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :jumpmove:

-
Well its mot was done and it failed :sad1: on headlights needed setting :P so it past after that job was done and it now has Tax in the window :jumpmove: but the little git will not idle correctly  so its been a few days of thinking and after doing a few things my mate thinks its the carbs that are just dumping fuel into the engine ie under 10mpg :scared: :rolleye: so after checking the jettings on the carbs he thinks its down to the floats inside the carbs not opening correctly ie just dumping the fuel in ie number 12 on this link
http://www.dellorto.co.uk/editor/uploads/images/DRLADIAG2.PDF
so as he is so busy this week and he will not be happy to let the car go as he wants it spot on for me  so its looking like the weekend to get it back maybe :sad1: oh well :sad1: but then again i dont want it back unless he is happy first

Are you gonna have time to clean it, surely it needs a damn good drive now!! :driver:
-
yeah just need to bed the mtr in over the next few days and keep my foot off the pedal :rolleye: but its cool as we have set the revs limiter to 4500rpm for now untill we have some miles on it and then once its done the miles its back in for an engine tune up and service and then its Line lock and burnouts time
-

^ This is the pic which floats my boat. Faultless.. Absolutely faultless.
If I saw this car on the road I'd be flashing my lights and waving appreciation. I hope I'll see it in the flesh one day. Don't get bored and sell it, Mat!
You almost expect the rear window to be split. It looks so.. German!
