Looked at February's Golf+ magazine and there was a piece about a MKII R36 conversion.
This got me thinking - the conversion is £10k and a MKV R32 about £17k, so £27k and I could have a 338bhp, 300lbft, R36 golf with 4WD
A supercharger conversion and I'm laughing
Any thoughts?

crazy, crazy man!!

^ This little number was regularly cracking out under 3 secs 0-60 (750 bhp) - It's why you see quite a few highly modified Mk1 & 2's on the dragstrip.
She's waiting for ya, Hurdy! : -

It'd surely be cheaper still on a MKV, as it won't need a loom/management/custom mounts/subframe etc etc...? No matter what you fit it to though, it's still a honking great lump of pig iron swinging around on the nose.
I wonder if you can put an S3 motor in a MKV R32??

Now theres another thought john!
-
i would not waste my money on i would do this
http://www.r32oc.com/forced-induction/6565-mk5-turbo-kit.html
i bet its fooking mad as i badger
-
Would rather turbo an R32 than put in the 3.6. The r32 is nose heavy enough as it is.
-
The 3.6 litre engine is actually lighter by 10 kg then the 3.2 unit luca .
-
^^^^
Which begs the question whether anyone knows the engine weight difference between the GTI and R32. Also weight difference between GTI and Ed30 - Negligable?
-
My mistake, didnt know that phil
Would still rather turbo the existing R32 engine or even supercharge it for nice linear power, and you cant beat a screaming supercharger at full chat :driver:
-

i only knew that cus hurdy told me over the phone :signLOL: :signLOL:
-
Hmmm, thoughts are pouring into my head now.
R32 - supercharged = lowdown grunt and no turbo lag and cheaper than a Turbo conversion but not generally as reliable as one
R36 = More n/a power, stock engine and the delicious V6 howl. Uprated rods and pistons would allow a higher redline and even more power. Also would be a "halfway house" to the HPA/HGP twin turbo conversion with 640bhp :innocent:
Edition 30 engined R32 = Could be a winner with a Garrett GT30 or 35 turbo and 500bhp with a lighter front than the R series engines.
Someone stop me from thinking these things - pleeeaaaaase :signLOL: :signIWS:
-
Hmmmmmmm save up for the GTR Hurdy.......!!

john my friend......you have finaly lost it

i think hurdy went hardcore a while back

My car account that I save into monthly has dropped by £8.5k due to buying the missis a new car from it. My xmas pressie to her.
This now means that I can't quite reach my GT-R target fund for this year and so may be looking elsewhere if I change. Alternatively it means I have an Edition 30 superfund :rolleye:
This is why thoughts are running rampant in my head at the minute. :jumping:
-
LOL - I reckon the leftover slush fund could easily convert yours to AWD
-
y not just just get yours 4mo ie all the running gear from the r32 as i know a ford guy that did it to his rs focus, he raised the boot floor and had a propshaft made for it.
-

that would be insane!!! hurdy, do this!!
-
^^ Great minds think alike.
Cut the boot floor out and panel it over with CF (or weld in an R32 boot, if you prefer) and get the running gear and stuff off the 'bay.
-
just go get an r32 floor panel it will save messing about and would be cheaper
-
Hmm, interesting one this. Could possibly even get the running gear off a front end R32 write off. JBS would probably be up for this too. Interesting :happy2:
I'll get back to you later.

i am having a look at the mo to see if i can find anything cheap
-
You're going to need some front end stuff too I suspect, oh and a 'box.

I'm a DSG 'box so it maybe a little more. Still looking JBS phone is busy atm.
-
Just got off the phone with JBS. They basically said to get my car converted to 4WD would be "a lot". They didn't give a figure, but said it would be much easier and cheaper to buy an R32 and drop in the Edition 30 engine and even cheaper to buy an R32 and have a turbo conversion. Back to square one for some more thoughts. :innocent:
Thanks for the searches though guys. :happy2:
-
Just turbo a dirtytwo and put it on a serious front end diet, Battery in the boot etc...
-
yeah I reckon R32 + turbo is the way to go...
however.... Audi have just added the quattro system to the 2.0TFSI TT 8) so thats another donor for parts (if you could find one!)
-
And here in sa we also get the quattro system on the audi a3 fsi. Is that not an exact plug and play? time to start searching for parts i think. Your car is gonna be pretty exclusive then.
-
the quattro system is actually the vw haldex system, quattro in the true sense rather than the brand was used on the longitudinal engined audis
-
Only thing is, I love the ED30 and don't really want to swap, so I may have to do an "illyun" :signLOL:
2 cars to mod may get a little expensive though, so would I then have to think about something else! :rolleye:

You had to go and mention me didn't you Hurdy... brought me out of incognito mode due to my vanity     I'll now have to submit some long overdue posts regarding the mods on my Ed30 and visits to JKM and pics of the new R32... plus I have bought ANOTHER car after the R32 :signIWS: So much for financial prudence during the recession. :driver:
-
OK, here's a preview of the R32... not very good photo as it was taken with my mobile phone. Thats my 4 year old daughter in the passenger seat probably thinking 'I've got a nice new clean car to make a lot of mess in' (the Ed30 still hasn't recovered from her vandalism )

You're just trying to tempt me now aren't you

Thats incorrect.
Quattro is quattro. Its a Audi developed system known as the Torsion system (Not sure about spelling) and it delivers the same amount of power and torque to all four wheels irrespective of the driving situation.
All Audi's that fall under the quattro brand use the torsion system. It is not the Haldex system. Quattro is permanent 4 wheel drive. Have you ever tried wheel spinning a Audi A4 3.0 litre quattro? Its literally impossible.
Haldex is as far as I understand a bit like traction control. It sends power to the wheels that need power. In effect it is as some consider "all wheel drive". It is not permanent and is not 50/50.
Mike
-
a3s have haldex badged quattro (they are based on the golf floorplan), as per my point a4s have longitudinal engines
-
Quattro is a premium brand though. They cant call a car a quattro if its not a quattro.
Let me take a look at a few info sheets I have on the A3's. I may be incorrect.
Mike
-
My apologies...
I did some looking and in essence it seems we are both somewhat confused...
1. The Audi A3 Range uses quattro. Permanent 4 wheel drive according to the specs and pricing on the official Audi webpage:
Select the S3 Quattro in manual and go down to drivetrain.
http://www.audi.co.za/a3/
2. This link however suggests the opposite:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haldex
Scroll down to "vehicles with haldex".
Clearly Audi is fooling its consumer. I sure as hell would not buy a car branded as quattro if it is not. Talk about false advertising
Mike
**Sorry hurdy for the major thread hijack**

I dont wanna be tempting you Hurdy but I just found this for sale http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=198870
For those that cannot see what it is, here is the description:
HALDEX 4X4 FULL SET UP!, mk5 R32 haldex system
a mate of mine is selling the haldex system from a mk5 r32 and asked me if i could put the word out
this is the full system and would be perfect for some1 wanting a 4x4 conversion
it consists of..
6 speed box
transfer box
full alloy rear cradle
rear diff ect ect
full prop
and the haldex ecu
he's lookin for around £500 but make him an offer
-
^^ Hmm, the more I think about it, the more I think it won't work..
It may all just bolt on, but will an ED30 ECU know what to do with Hadlex, or all the other new sensors it's found? I'd love to be proved wrong, but there must be a good reason why I've never seen a conversion.
I think I just applied too much simplicity with comparisons to the likes of MKII's running Rallye 4WD, it's not that easy any more.
-
I'm edging back towards a Quaife LSD to try it out before deciding. I may have to
nick borrow Neil's car for a quick comparison. :happy2:
Otherwise I'll go 4WD in some form. :rolleye:

....All the Quaife diff will do is greatly speed up reaction to loss of traction on the appropriate drive wheel. It reduces wheelspin but doesn't stop it happening completely - That's up to your right foot! It's greatest benefit is in cornering, imo.
Your best bet is to have a go up the dragstrip in someone's GTI with a Quaife (not mine!).
