Just fitted the RNS-510 aerial adaptor lead to solve my speaker problems I was having when using the MDI interface (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,12499.msg187738.html#msg187738).
Now it's fitted, I can't get AM radio, just interference. FM works as before. It's consistently worked up until now.
Any ideas?
Thanks

The AM Aerial lead has come off.
-
check to see if both aerials are connected, oh and what are you listening too an AM

The AM Aerial lead has come off.
But that would suggest the new aerial adaptor doesn't do its job? :sad1:
They both were definitely on as I tested it when the unit was out before refitting, I'll triple check though...

:signLOL: Only comes in handy for FiveLive when I'm in the car after away games/for England games :happy2:

swap the plugs round and try that, 1 cable will work on both but the other will only work on the specific one.

I've only recently got my car and hve no AM radio. How easy is it to check the aerial leads? I have an RCD300 in a 2007 Golf GTI. Thanks.

Checking the lead is easy, getting to it is another matter

I never fixed this in the end Sean!
I think I vaguely remember swapping the culprit wires at the back of the RNS and I had neither working FM nor AM radio as a result.
In the end I've just lived without AM for the last year which admittedly is a bit of a pain when you're driving back from 150 miles away and there's a 5.15pm kickoff on FiveLive after an away game :chicken:
-
If you have VCDS, you can do a diagnostic on the aerials individually to check all is working :happy2:
-
^ That I do mate. I'll check it out but I don't remember there being errors in the scans I ran around the time I discovered the issue...

Did you get any errors during a VCDS scan Drexel?
-
It doesnt show as error. Go into Radio then Measuring Blocks and i think its group 8/9/10 youll see itll say Radio Connection 1 - OK
-
Did you get this sorted?
I have the same issue.
I had to remove one of the plug covers to get the aerials to fit the RNS510, so it's feasible that mine are round the wrong way.
Means I've got to pull the RNS out again and try switching them over.
So, do I remove the plastic clips (that don't fit the RNS510) or buy the adaptor?
-
Id suggest buying the adapter to be fair - it ensures a good connection, and they wont fall off when your driving along.
I bought the adapter and it was defo worth it!
Have you got VCDS lee? If not, I can bring it up when I pick up the downpipe and check its set properly :happy2:
-
Right,
Just ordered the adaptor from ebay then.
Will give that a whirl.
I've got a HEX+CAN USB lead and VCDS Alex, just learning how to use it again! :) It's been sat in the drawer for the last 2years!
-
Ah happy days!
Oh good. Best brush the dust off it :signLOL:

The un-converted plastic shrouds will only fit on one way round as they have little flanges (assuming you remove one) so that should ensure you have them on the right pegs, also cant you get the signal strength for both aerial in either the radio menu (holding down setup) or the secret menu (long hold setup)
-
As rich has said no need to mess with VCDS.
Press setup for about 10 secs and it changes to the radio service menu. Then select either FM or AM and it will give you all the info you need to know. :happy2:

Forgot about that :signLOL: VCDS has more details though

Managed to strip the console down today to look at the leads. Both are fitted and as someone has said can only be fitted on the correct connector due to the flanges. Still no AM radio though so I'm guessing the lead must be broken somewhere or disconnected at the other end. Does anyone know where the AM lead terminates at the opposite end from the stereo? Thanks
-
Both are FM tuners with AM on one lead from what I remember. One of them goes to the roof, the other to the rear window
Someone will probably elaborate on this though
-
Both my leads are connected according to the head unit.
AM Signal = POOR  No sh*t
-
Is that with the adapter Lee?

Need to know the age pf your car as pre MY06 there was a diversity amplifiere under the driver seat, also do you have a fin for GPS or phone,
-
No, not yet Alex... it's on order... Only bought it yesterday

My car is a 2007. No fin fitted for GPS or phone. My stereo is an RCD 300 rather than the 510 the topic is about but the main point about no AM signal still remains.

Im used to things arriving at TPS 8AMish and fitting them by 9AM lol...gotta love it :signLOL:

Just to revisit this one.
I ordered and fitted this adaptor (£11):
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270730526196#ht_741wt_907
Now, AM works perfectly.

The adaptor is the key :happy2:

This is exactly what I purchased CP.
Didn't make any positive difference so clearly some wires are lose or damaged somewhere else. Tad strange
-
Thats quite odd pete, as my AM reception is fine aswell using that adapter
What aerial have you got - sharkfin or beesting?
-
^ I know dude, agreed.
It's definitely my environment, as such. I ran the wires without the adaptor on the RNS for a good 9 months or so, therefore perhaps it damaged them at some point then?
Beesting btw. It sits too high though, I need to crunch the screw length
-
Hmm maybe try a new Polo aerial - they apparently give much better signal than stock in any case

I upgraded to the RNS 510 (from RCD 500) about 3 months ago. While changing over I noticed that there were no plastic connectors on the 2 aerial wires. I then remembered that the previous owner mentioned he did have the RNS 510 in there so must have removed the plastic connectors.
Therefore the previous owner must have had them connected without the adaptor and I currently have them connected without the adaptor and work fine. So it sounds like your AM cable is damaged or disconnected somewhere along the line.
