Evening all
I’ve seen loads of threads on is it worth fitting R8 coils to your mk5 GTI but nothing in which to buy.
So I bought some genuine VAG coils red coils and there not an exact match, are there different versions?
The top rubber seal is different and they are slightly shorter, they are in and the car runs fine but not what I’d call a factory fit,

The black and red coils are exactly the same dimensionally, and electrically. The red colour is just engine dressing for the V8.
If red ones you've fitted are a different length etc to the what you had before, something isn't right. Perhaps the coils you had before weren't genuine?

Hi thanks for the reply, either a drunk electrician or my chosen ignition type.
The old ones certainly fitted better but the car runs fine and is starting slightly better,
I’ll check the old units for part numbers, the reds have vag numbers and came in VW boxes but just don’t feel like a factory fit,

Hmmmm, that doesn't sound right.
I've got OEM red and black coils (bought from VW and Audi dealers respectively, not internet parts) and they poke into the plug holes exactly the same. Same 'clink' sound when engaging onto the spark plugs, same length, same materials, same everything - just a different p/n.....which just denotes the colour of the plastic.
One obvious clue of an OEM coil is a squirt of dielectric grease inside the coil connector. Think it's a pale green colour from memory. The pattern coils I've seen don't have that.

Regarding the OEM coils, we know the brand? NGK?

OEM ones are made by Eldor. The branding and p/n number info is painted onto the connector part of the coil. The top bit should be plain black resin.
I've not heard of Eldor before but after a quick google, they are a legit Italian automotive firm.
