Title: Carbon Vinyl Mad...
Post by: Boothy on March 23, 2010, 06:25:02 pm
Bought my self some 3M DI-NOC vinyl from the same place as Monte. £18 for a 1350x270mm sheet and its top notch stuff. I painted the front badge previously but I got fed up with stone chips so decided to go down the vinyl route instead and I'm glad I did.

Really pleased with the result so I went onto cover the steering wheel inserts.........

The only problem now is I've loads left and I can feel my self wanting to do EVERYTHING!!

Somewhere called Underground Graphics (http://www.undergroundgraphics.com/Sunstrips/Carbon-Fibre-Sunstrips/c-1-256-727/).
For some reason they sell a carbon fibre 'sunstrip' which is currently reduces to £18 but if you buy a normal sheet its as expensive as everywhere else? Anyway have a look at the link and I can vouch for the quality too. Its the shizzle!
Do the rear valance/diffuser Booth then you can show me how  :P  :signLOL:
I had considered that but it means sanding the texture off of it which I can't be bothered with really. The piece I got is just wider than the centre console here the stereo is so I think I'm gonna do that instead.

Love the badge mate  :congrats:  Looks a good job. Are you gonna do the gloss black grill too? IF I decide to stick with the carbon rear diffuser, I will get some more vinyl and do the grill and badge too. I also think the rear badge background would look in vinyl too.

Booth, I presume you split the front badge and then wrapped the VW logo? did you cut the stuff flush or did you wrap it under the badge?..........(if that makes any sense at all)  :ashamed:

Cheers Monte. I'm not sure about the gloss it? I'll have to see if the piece is wide enough to cover it all in one piece. If it does then maybe that or the centre console which it will defo cover.
I split the badge mate and then wrapped it around. I'd hear that if you don't do that the vinyl eventually retracts slightly revealing the chrome so I decided I'd wrap it. It took a nice sharp craft knife, a hair dryer and some patience but eventually I got it looking good. Theres no creases, ripples or anything so really happy with it.
Like I said thought. Once you've done a bit you just wanna do everything :signLOL:

Are you going to do the interior silver bit on the dash and doors they would look nice?

Not sure how to remove them but yeh they'd look pretty good, although they do help break up the dash a little in silver.

Has anyone ever removed the surround  from around the gear lever and the ash tray cover that might be able to tell me how to remove it?

Jay's (JPC) wrapped grill surround looks amazing in my opinion
He's probably the best person to ask for pointers  :happy2:

Hopefully i will put some of my Zymol Royale on, but im still split on that!

I will leave it a while i think and not strip it off for the sake of putting the Royale on.

How easy was it to get the inserts off the steering wheel?  Is there a removal guide or instructions anywhere on the forum?  thanks.

Oh my god that grill looks the SHIZZLE!!!!!! I'llbe measuring up 2moro! The bits on the steering wheel come of a piece of piss, just pull from the bottom. Gently but firm, like I treat a woman (did i mention i'm pissed)  :happy2:

Looks really good, fancy having a go too.
Does the trim just clip off?

I have some real CF but it is a bit thik to mould/shape.

The steering wheel inserts are great too. Mine are looking a bit tired.

I am definitely gonna do my grill now. Did you do it yourself?  Also, how did you stick the magnets to the numberplate and behind the grill, and do they mark the carbon fibre at all?

Once again, looks just great on a black car.

Fancied the rear bumper but it means sanding it all down and the  I just can't be bothered with the hassle really. Might buy some badges , cover them and then flog them.

The bit around the gear lever clips off pretty easy if you get something under the trim nearest the handbrake. Once thats off there are 2 x screws to remove and the ashtray bit just slides out then.  I found this prior to doing it:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2016.0.html

Bare in mind though that if the vinyl is quite thick it will probably stop the ashtray from opening correctly. I had to really stretch it when I did mine as it was causing the tray to stick slightly. Other than that you'll have to cut it flush rather than wrapping it down the sides. All in all its pretty simple though. Just have the hair dryer and scalpel ready!

I think all of these mods look really good, some can look cheap/tacky but these all look great, I want to do the metal inserts on my door cards as the drivers one on mine is really badly scratched and tiny dents that the previous owner somehow inflicted on them, could anyone tell me how to remove these metal strips?

Thanks

Tom
