Hi Pmoky,

Im fairly sure the centre arm-rest should be a easy fit, and will just be the reverse process of taking it off which is detailed in alot of threads and post.  The whole centre console is a little more involved.

As for the cables for the CD changer you have two choices, first is Kufatec MDI cable
http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1113_MEDIA-IN-MDI-Interface---Harness---VW-Golf-5.html (http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1113_MEDIA-IN-MDI-Interface---Harness---VW-Golf-5.html)

Or you can buy the cable itself, but have to mod it into the main connector yourself, and find an earth point.
http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p517_CD-Changer-Cable---RNS-E--RNS-2--MFD-2--RNS-510--Delta.html (http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p517_CD-Changer-Cable---RNS-E--RNS-2--MFD-2--RNS-510--Delta.html)

I assume the USB device for the changer slot is an MDI interface, and looks like this?
http://www.kufatec.de/shop/popup_image.php/pID/1131/imgID/0 (http://www.kufatec.de/shop/popup_image.php/pID/1131/imgID/0)

If it is then my preference would be this as via another cable you can also have full ipod control with id3 tags displayed, but I believe you will need a RNS or RCD 510 for this to work (but may be wrong on this point.

If you dont fit the rol top cup holder let me know as im on the look out for one at the moment.

Rich

Yeah, unless like me you have gone for decorative rear aircon vents!  :ashamed: I plan to eventually get them plumbed in, but I dont sit in the back of the car, so not too worried  :P and to fit them you will need new pipes Pmoky and remove the entire center tunnel including gear stick.

Part No. for the piping is:
•   CD Changer Air Duct: Part Number 1K0 864 255C (1K0864255C)

I have the 2 dogs in the back of my car, the English Bull likes to push his head between the front seats and lean on the armrest, he has successfully broken both rear vent direction controls... oh well, as said, don't use them anyway!

Good work mate, looks awesome what head-unit are you using the USB with?  Makes a massive difference to the car having the arm-rest in, and alot more comfortable on the long cruises.  :happy2:

As it saves starting a new topic, I'm looking to retrofit an armrest to my GTI.

Anyone point me in the right direction with regards to part numbers etc?

My understanding is that there are a few variations of what can go in the armrest, such as, an empty storage space, ipod connector, usb connector or cd changer?

Cheers
Nick

I'm kicking this back to life as it almost provides what I want but not quite. I recently had an RNS 510 fitted by Darren (Ace operator) and now want to get rid of the CD changer in the armrest and fit an alternative. I know the MDI is the popular choice but I'm not too keen on the re-cabling it involves and would be quite happy with just the USB dock as shown above . The CD changer cabling is already there so that's half the job done. I'm aware of its limitations but I just thought it would be better than fitting the blank bin thing and would possibly give me a covered phone charging and storage box. Prices on e bay are stupidly high at the moment so an alternative might be to get the blank bin and fit a chassis mounted USB terminal with a voltage dropper as required, or get the old Ipod cubby and convert it to USB.  Does anybody have anything to offer ( maybe an old USB box!!) or am I right off the map?
Regards,
John

Does the MDI usb adoptor work with the std RC300 unti?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-SEAT-SKODA-MDI-MEDIA-IPOD-MP3-USB-ARMREST-ADAPTOR-/250786376753?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a64086c31

I have read it a few times that it only works with touch screen?

I currently have an Ipod connection in the arm rest put would like to swop it for a USB

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Scousus, not sure if you could convert the old ipod ones to USB as they were firewire charging which is a different voltage and pin out you would need to track down a converter.  Alternatively if you got one of the cubby hole trims they have a seperate section in the lowere plastic where you can get aircon vent in to cool or heat the box, I reckon that could be easily converted to a cigarette 12v unit with a USB cigarette plug in for charging phones.

Peter,  I believe the MDI is only compatible with the third generation stereos so you would need an RNS510 RNS310 or RCD510 or equivalent to operate the MDI interface.

The one at the start of this thread works with the older units and acts and uses the CD changer cabling and will play the first 99 or so tracks and I dont believe it will give you track names just numbers.  I believe it was an Audi unit but im not 100% on that.

Thanks for that mate, I've pretty much searched it to death now and there's nothing that I can see so I think the blank bin and 12v socket is the way Ill go.
Appreciate your help.

John

I reckon a fairly neat job could be made of that, if you look for an image of it its already a round aperture so you should be able to find a suitbale socket to fit straight in, its just like the one in your glove box.
