So having trawled around on here searching for an answer, I'm lost.
Basically I'm led to believe my mk5 gti has heated mirrors but they don't work.
I've checked and they have terminals to the glass but no matter what possistion I put the door switch onto, there is no voltage going to the wires on the glass.
I've looked around and apparently there's a J99 relay that controls them?
When I've looked under my dash, there's no relay J99 at all?

has the rotary switch for the mirrors been changed in the past?
the one o'clock position usually is the position for enabling the heated mirrors (on a car with folding mirror and heated mirror option).
also what year is your car as, iirc, the early 05 and 06 models had both mirrors heated but on later models it only offered heated driver side mirror.
a vcds scan could be helpful here...

Yeah I fitted this

I've tried turning it to the "1pm" setting, 0 setting and all the rest. Then used a multi meter at the pin connectors on the door mirror and nothing. It's a 2005 plate axx engine and it's weird how it's got the wires to the mirrors but no power going to them.
The weirdest part is the relay photo that shows nothing there even tho this diagram says there should be one?

Does it need the HRW on for them to operate?

No

So am I supposed to have that relay in? Can someone check to see if they have a relay fitted with heated mirror?. It's just behind the pull down storage under the light switch.

I don't appear to have 2 or 3 and I have heated mirrors, that said my rear screen hasn't worked for a while, hmmm.
-
Check for a break in the wires in the driver door rubber boot at the hinge.

Seems odd how the diagram states a heated mirror relay and I don't have a relay.

I emailed a vw dealer today and he reckons this
Do you have the heated rear screen switched on, the mirrors only work when the screen is switched on?.

So your saying the heated mirrors only work when you press the headed rear screen button? So what's the point of the dial on the mirror switch with a heat icon on?
-
Yes it works off its own element switch icon on the wing mirror selection knob - no you don't need to use the heated screen button.
It must be cold enough for the mirrors to work, below 10°C
Heated mirror control is worked by the door module and I would suspect wiring failure in the door loom if the fuse tests out as OK
-
Just seems odd that if your wing mirrors are iced over and your rear window is fine, you have to press the heated rear screen in order to activate the heating on the mirrors. Thanks for the video, gonna turn the dial to heat, press the rear window heater button then probe the wires on the door mirror to check current.
-
On the two mk5’s that iv had you didn’t have to have the rear window heater on for the heated mirrors to work.
-
Yeah made no difference at all. Still don't work. Can someone check if there should be a heated mirror relay in there car as the above pics show there should be one and mine doesn't have one?
-
Just spoke to a vw head technician. Turns out there should be a 449 relay in the tip slot and it's been removed for some reason. Nothing to do with turning the door dial to heat and put rear screen button on too to get them to work.
Gonna test the wires with a multi meter before putting a relay in. Must have been removed for a reason and the technician warned me to check the wires first incase of a short to ground
