All;
I want to get the cruise control for my 07 GTI, however having just phoned VW they are saying they want just over £200 for the stalk (well kit).
Any ideas if its cheaper to get anywhere else etc? Seems a bit OTT on price to be me.
-
That sounds like the fitted price.
The stalk for the dealers is around £50.
Where are you based as there are a few people on here than can help with fitting :happy2:
-
Got mine from local Scoda garage. VW Leeds wouldn't sell the stalk.
Think they got the price wrong or were feeling generous or most likely as it was on the shelf a cancelled order.
Only cost me £30 for cash.
I had it on my desk for a few weeks and lost the wire & instructions that comes with the kit, but still managed to fit and code myself.
(You won't need the wire if post 56 plate from mem)
If you are local happy to help :happy2:
BTW regular price about £60 Inc VAT but ask for a discount.
-
Was out and about with the missus so poped into another dealer got it for £59! Thats more like it...
i'm in S Wales, prob got someone lined up to fit it. Not even got the car yet lol.

Hi guys
Just for a bit of info on cruise fitting.
If the car is either diesel or DSG equipped you dont need to fit the wire but all others you do. M.Y. does not change this.

Wrong.
I have a MY08 Ed30 Manual, Retro fitted CC and it did not need the extra wire.

Not true.
Depends on MY and spec. ALL older golfs need the wire. Dependent upon spec some may need sw controller too. GTI are ok re controller.
-
to quote from a VW master tech of many years who did mine "diesel and DSG cars do not need the extra wire old or new when it comes to mkv GTI's".
stokeballoon, you have one of the last models so the systems tend to change a bit when getting near the end of run where they start testing new systems for up and coming models.

Just shows how dealers keep getting it wrong.
55 plate DSG needed the cable. PIA to fit but well worth it.
Well documented on here and other MK5 forums.
Some dealers are doing the fitted kit for between £99 & £149. Just got to see what offers are out there. £200 is the most expensive I have heard.
Don't worry service at Leeds VW didn't know the mk 5 GTI had axcam belt!!!

Having fitted one or two of these myself over the years :signLOL: I can hand on heart assure you that your informant is incorrect. It's cars before late 05 that require the extra wire to be fitted.
The only way that DSG comes into any relavence is that DSG cars have Highline display which almost certainly assures that you have the correct steering controller

Hi Stu
Glad you spotted the tread. The Guru on these matters.
But...
My DSG doesn't have highline or paddle shift. :(
Sometimes wish I had an MY06. Then you don't get the blue tint bits of aluminium etc.
And the car was a bargain. Mustn't grumble.
-
Where do you get the wire from? Does anyone know the part number and price, as I have an 05 GTI, and currently have the stalk ready to be fitted. is the wire all I will need?
-
It's part of the kit only.
Lost mine with the instructions. Think wife "tidied my desk"
So I put out a begging plea on the forum. Loads of helpful guys and gals.
JPC came up trumps in the end.
-
Hi Stu
I also dont have the highline display. Seems there is nothing set in stone when it comes to this.

I have a 55 plate DSG equipped GTI and I didn't need the wire when I retro-fitted my CC. My car was manufactured in December 2005, so it is pretty much a 2006 spec model if that makes any difference, plus it has the highline display.
Still, I should have checked first as I took off the windscreen cowling, removed the wiper motor (fiddly job) and stood there with that bloody wire in my hand scratching my head for a good half an hour before it finally dawned on me that I didn't need it... Doh!
-
I'd not seen many DSG without highline, I think it may have become standard at some stage.
Easiest way to see if you need it is to look at the plug on the steering controller. Black & White wire, it's the only one in there.
-
Think the wiper motor is the hardest part by a long long way.
Bet there is a knack to it, but I couldn't work it out. Brute force & ignorance.
VrStu - is it ok to assume that retro fitting paddle shift & mfsw will be ok on an early dsg?
Just wondering about the steering wheel controller.

My DSG is a late 08 model, and i only have the mid-line. So i dont think it came part of the standard spec at any time. :happy2:

I think the steering wheel controller will likely be ok if you've fitted CC already.

Went to the dealer today, and they told me they wanted £85 for the kit, plus fitting charge ( said he had to check with the technician to see how long it would take/cost!
I have a 55 plate DSG GT TDI, with mid-line clocks and no MFSW... so does this mean that they would have to fit a new steeringwheel control box?

I went to jkm in the week and they do it for 100 quid fitted IIRC

Sorry but that is incorrect, The rule is you don't need it from late 2005 early 2006

the one you want from me supports cruise as well as the Paddle shift. depending when your car was made will determine if you need the wire too
