Hi, I'm looking at new tyres for my refurbished ED 30 Pescaras... I know the general consensus is Michelin SP4's, but I like the look of the ample rim protection on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5...
He talks about rim protection at 2:00 in...
Looking at them when stacked up, the Goodyears are in the middle and as well as the ample rim protection you can see on the top tyre, the whole stack looks taller.
I was going to go with the existing consensus and get the SP4's, but seeing the extra protection the F1A5s give to the rim I may be swayed. Their performance isn't a mile away from each other is it? I drive like a vicar most of the time anyway ;)
Cheers

If your not pushing the limit you won't see any difference between any top brand tyre. TBH, I think in the dry you'd struggle to see the difference even if you were pushing really hard. I'm sure the Goodyears will be great.
ETA I think the MPS4 is a great tyre, but the cult like support they get on internet forums is a bit much. There are other tyres that are as good, or even better and get reviewed as such

Sounds like you have already made your decision?!?

What about the supersport tyres from Goodyear. Getting good feedback.

I know what you mean...I have seen tire specs showing one tire 1/2" wider tread than another...and are still listed as the same size. I just looked at five different tires and their tread width ranges from 7.8" to 8.4" (15mm difference)...with Goodyear being the widest. I did run 225/40-18 Pirelli PZ all season plus at 7.2 inch tread width, but switching to a 235/40-18 Pirelli PZ4 the tread width is now 8.2 inch.

@colesey (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1819) yeah maybe I just want reassurance :)
@imprezzaworks (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=27821) They look good yeah, but 15% more pricey than the F1A5's, so will probably go with those.
I guess as there was no one shouting "NooooOOOoooO!", then I'll go with the F1A5's
Thanks all!

Just to let you know, on 17” Asy5s, BlackCircles were quoting £289.80 fitted (inc. a £25 discount on buying 4)
