Title: Knocking noise when pulling away in 1st
Post by: Havelin150 on March 19, 2021, 01:40:34 pm
Hi all,

After some help/advice in case someone has had the same issue. I have a DSG Edition 30 on 112k now. I've got this really annoying knocking noise when I first start to roll away in 1st, no throttle. It's not as loud when hot but much worse when cold. I did have a transmission mount insert installed, have removed this and still getting the same knocking sound. Here is a link to a clip of it-

Any ideas/help would be massively appreciated as it's driving me nuts.

Thanks

If you can record the noise it could help diagnosis. 👍

It could be anything as requested a vid would be fab but my guess it could be something like track rod ends ,ball joint or drive shaft as those are common faults and new bush could have magnified problem

Gearbox fine, put it through basic settings a couple of weeks back. Although if cold and I sit in drive with my foot on the brake it makes a quiet noise which goes if I click it in neutral. Think that's normal though.

Only reason I ask is mine isn’t dsg but when my gearbox failed 1st gear gave several faults but none were logged as codes within 4 weeks of non starting rough selection and generally rough starting the gearbox failed. New gearbox sorted it and it’s been fine for last 3 yrs and mine was about same mileage as yours when it failed.....might be worth looking at as an auto gearbox check isn’t expensive

Does it also do the same in reverse? Sounds like the mechatronic unit. You can get them refurbished. No idea of cost though (as I haven’t needed to for mine)

Assume this is with it in drive with brakes on? - yes normal, that's the clutch slipping.

I am not really hearing any particular stand out noises in your video - BTW it worked for me in Google before the youtube version.

Subframe creaking / knocking is a common issue on Mk5's where subframe bolts stretch, only reported occuring when pulling away.

Well I have just scanned it and I have a p17100 input speed sensor fault come up in the transmission module so might have to look deeper into that. When rolling in 2nd then I let off the accelerator i do get a small knock aswell which have only noticed recently leading me to think it's a mount etc.

Yes sometimes in reverse too, much worse in 1st going forward though. As mentioned above I am also getting a single knock when I let off when rolling in 2nd from cold.

Yes in drive, worse if I touch the brakes and slow the car to a slow creep.

That's a good shout as it goes, do you think that could also contribute the the small knock I get when letting off in 2nd? I read subframe clunks a bit when at higher speeds, I'm not getting that

I have not experienced this issue myself, I have only read low speed - how would you hear it at higher speeds?

I planned to remove the potential of that problem when I rebuilt my front suspension,
New bolts for the subframe - sourced the recommended full length threaded replacement bolts
Mine is a late 2006 DSG, subframe looked like it had never been off - turned out mine already had full threaded bolts, not the waisted type that stretches - I am thinking the stretchy bolts were on early cars but have no evidence.

**SOLVED**

Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions. After installing the sub frame spacer kit, I was still having the knock. After expecting the worst it turned out to be the heat shield for my induction Kit rattling on the wiring connector behind the headlight. Cable tie to the rescue and all sorted. Silly me 👍

I had a similar thing with the heat shield rattling on a plug only happened when I was in reverse it took me a while to figure it out I thought my engine/gearbox was about to die  :signLOL:
