Title: Falken FK452 or Michelin Pilot Sport PS3?
Post by: rotor on March 28, 2010, 04:01:23 pm
Hi guys,

I'm thinking of replacing all four tyres, and have more or less boiled it down to either the Falken FK452 or the Michelin Pilot Sport (PS2 or PS3). Now, I know these have very different prices, and therein lies the rub. Fully fitted prices for four tyres:

Falken FK452 - £304
Michelin Pilot Sport PS3 - £558

So the thing is... is it really worth spending an extra £254 for the Michelins? I know they have excellent reviews, but the Falkens aren't that far behind!

Suggestions, ideas, recommendations?

I have recent purchased a set of the PS3's and they are miles ahead of the falken's I have on my other wheels.

On all fronts (handling in the dry & wet, wear rate, noise, etc) the PS3's are just better IMHO  :happy2:

Costco might have a 25% off deal on Michelins, either now or very soon.

Not currently as I brought mine there less than two weeks ago, but given the normal frequency of these offers it won't be long until the next one  :happy2:

If only I had a Costco membership... (I don't understand why it's not available to the general public -- in the States it is). Having said that, is it 20% off their normal low prices? Because I drove past a Kwik-Fit today and saw a sign for 25% off all Michelins, went in to ask, and it was 25 off some ridiculous high price, so even with the "discount" it was still dearer than their own online prices. Annoying.

At the 3 branches i've tried, all would give the 20% off the PSCups, problem is none of them are allowed to sell them anymore...

Just pop into your nearest one and ask at the membership desk, most professional trades qualify as do anyone with their own company etc, i qualify as my employer (united technologies) is on the list of approved employers, so just ask as you may well qualify, £29 for a years membership  :happy2:

Best memberships benefit by far is the hotdogs in the cafe...

Or, ask a mate who is a member to go along with you and use their card. Worked fine for me.

Obviously on the understanding you feed him/her as many hotdogs as they can humanly snaffle. Which may or may not be worth while in the long run, last time I saw that many sausages pass someone's lips, I was watching that Annabel Chong video...

Hi, just posted as a newbie in the general area, picking up GTI wednesday.  Currently has the Bridgestone on the rear, but Scudo Stunners on the front.  Guy chipping it in to the dealer, obviously bought cheapest tyres possible!  They look awful and on the test drive vibrate like hell.

I just ordered 2 x Michelin Pilot Sport 3 225/45 R17 W (94) for the front from Blackcircles, used discount code BCMHMAR56 and got 3% discount.  Paid £229, with mobile fitter coming to my house Thursday.

Thought price was ok and don;t have to sit at the garage for an hour.  Hope this helps someone.

I thought £229 was way too cheap, but then realised you ordered 17" tyres -- big difference with the 18" ones!

It turns out that it is trivial to get a membership if you have a limited company (which I do). I will be driving to my nearest Costco this evening. =)

Happy indeed. At £448 it's a no-brainer! Hopefully I'll get a Costco membership tonight.

Just rang the Leeds store, price per tyre is £139.11.

They will only give you 20% off if you buy 4 tyres and you MUST produce the 20% discount voucher.

Then 4 tyres will work out at £445.15 fully fitted.

Good deal

Costco have been doing the 20% deal on the tyres for years now and if you are a member you receive a mail shot with upcoming offers, the tyre deals are usually on 2-3 times a year and the next one is scheduled for after easter, i've never had to produce any vouchers when the offer is live, just turn up and hand over the cash (costco do not accept credit cards) and your done  :happy2:

I had Vred Sessantas (225/40/18) fitted on Thursday, all in for £380, including tracking.

So far, they seem very nice, and I'm comparing to the Goodyear F1 Assymmetrics on my BMW. Praise indeed :happy2:

The ZE912's are only speed rated W though. I thought the correct fitment is a Y rated? thats why I chose the FK 452's over them as they are rated correctly.

Speed Rating Mile/Hour

Theres no way im ever going reach 168mph let alone 186 lol

Good point, but I was told by my supplier that the ZE912's are more suitable for big luxurious saloons and the like, rather than the hot hatches and other performance cars the FK's are aimed at.  Sidewalls are supposed to be stiffer on the FK's as well for improved feedback.

I cant fault the others so far and done a few miles on them now and the grip is decent too, they are extra load tyres too so should have stiffened sidewalls
