Title: Black Pirelli DSG
Post by: Twistedandy on July 21, 2021, 09:45:47 pm
Had this a couple of weeks now, really like the balance of the car.

Added the wind deflectors.
Changed the internal and some external lighting to white LED
Added a DAB dongle but will need to change the shark fin for one that supports DAB
Had countless issues with the Bluetooth mic, volume is really low and badly distorted.
Added an iPhone charging cable behind drivers side vent and slapped on a phone cradle
Need to sort out a scuffed DSG base plate, I think it’s quite normal to have a scuffed one 😀

Looks like I have a thermostat problem, in that it’s always open. It takes too long for the temperature to rise and it will fall at motorway speeds. It will only get to 90C when it’s idling. I’m hoping I can get this repaired under warranty. I’ll advise further once known.

I’d also like to replace the shark fin for one that includes DAB as I am unhappy with the drop out rate after using an amplified signal splitter on the FM/AM fin.

I have also booked in locally to wrap the front lip and to have the brake calipers repainted. I managed to kerb an alloy at the weekend, gave myself an arse-kicking….

Tonight’s job, as it’s resembling a monsoon outside is to replace the front windscreen wipers, I managed to get Bosch aero for half the price our local Halfords wanted, from Amazon.

I launched the car a couple of times this weekend - it’s a lot of fun and I was trying to get some experience to reduce the initial wheel spin. Any tips appreciated.

Don't use launch control. Just feed in the throttle progressively. Upgrade the front control arm rear bushes with anti-lift bushes and fit a dogbone insert bush to reduce engine movement.

Thank you, I’ll take a look at those bushes…

Freshened up the front as the red beading was badly faded and went for sunshine yellow. Included the bottom lip and I think it looks fresh. Will get to the brake calipers for painting before the weather breaks - I hope.

Working on a reverse camera addition at the moment. Taking the inner trim off was done carefully, I’m hoping it’ll go back on just as easily.

I’ve mounted a small camera just above the rear licence plate and run the cable through a hole I drilled in the bumper behind the licence plate. The wires then run through a hole into the boot and I’m currently running a 12v live from the rear 12v socket for the relay. I’ve yet to find the live feed to the reverse light but have the trim off so shouldn’t take me too long. Planning to complete the wiring at the back end before running the RCA cable to the head unit..

Got the reverse camera all installed now, makes a huge difference in my opinion as I’m used to having one to ensure safety when reversing. My driving is bad enough going forward never mind about the reverse gear.

Title: Dud shark fin - removal advice please.
Post by: Twistedandy on December 29, 2021, 08:03:20 pm
Thank you, looking to improve the DAB reception next. My thoughts were to replace the roof mounted shark fin. I felt through the head lining beneath the shark fin and couldn’t feel a nut/wires/fixings - I am now presuming that the shark fin is a dud, for show only - why would someone do that and more to the point - how did they stick it on and is the paintwork likely to be damaged under the gasket…?

The rear screen has vertical copper lines so I’m presuming the FM radio antenna is in the hatchback. I have fitted a splitter at the head unit for DAB but it’s no good as there’s too many drop-outs to even have a usable radio.

Anyone come across a dud shark fin? How did you manage to remove it ? Advice appreciated

I cant say for 100% certainty but ive viewed many a video of people removing their c pillar trim and slightly peeling back their headlining to reveal the fixings underneath/inside the car, i think they found this as the easiest method (and least disruptive/chance for damage to the headlining).

Screen is an Xtrons android head unit.
Title: DAB Antenna
Post by: Twistedandy on January 01, 2022, 01:41:28 pm
Used some time off to remove the old shark fin, it was screwed in…..but there was nothing attached to it, not a sausage…..the FM was running off the VW aerial in the hatch back. Took the shark fin off leaving a square hole. Used a hole cutter to make a new round 20mm hole for an eightwood antenna. DAB comes through well now with no drop-outs so entirely useable now.

That DAB aerial looks like the ebay special I fitted to mine - except mine didn't have a name! - I have to say it has really good DAB reception, only drops out in very rural valleys.

Amazon rather than EBAY, eigthwood brand, very good and can get spares if someone takes to antenna…as happened to my daughters Golf GT 140….bloody students…😀
