Hi guys im just about to buy my first mk5 gti and want to upgrade the speakers as the guy im buying it from said they're no good! so i was wondering if anyone could tell me what size speakers i will need? thanks

I’ve just done a quick search and it seems to be a real pita on a Mk 5 to get replacement speakers unless you want to spend hundreds on higher quality stuff.
May be better to just stick to oem ones, the head unit is the weak link in these cars.

let me know how you get on as I think I have a blown speaker/corroded wire it crackles (passenger side) so will need to get that sorted.

My passenger one has crackled for years  Not just mine then!
There are loads of speaker options available for the MK5. I think the main area of faff is VW rivet the plastic speaker basket to the door, which just usually need drilling out with a 5 or 6mm drill. No drama really. Rivet gun kits are cheap as from Halfords, or you can go full ghetto and silicon the replacement basket to the door or use self tappers
As mentioned above, the head unit itself is the weak link. The amplifiers are very weak sauce and distort easily. That can be solved to some extent by having the fader on full front, therefore the amplifier has less work to do. Rear speakers sound sh1t anyway. No one sits with their back to a concert, so shove all the amplification to the front only and see if that helps :happy2:

My passenger side is crackling as well .. ive seen these which i might consider as a replacement

Pointless unless you have an upgraded HU and standards are fine.
If you do upgrade you will need to amp your speakers of they’ll sound cack

You can get some tiny little class D amps now, which can sit under a front seat. Gone are the days of needing massive breeze block sized amps in the boot with industrial sized cabling running front to back
If you want a kick arse system for the front doors, how about a 3 way setup with 8" woofers.....niiiiiiiiice :happy2:

i remember fitting my pioneer 8” woofers but they needed amping and I just couldn’t be bothered so ripped them out after all the headache of fitting rear 6.5” pioneers too
