Title: 2.0tfsi Engine replaced, new engine seized

Hi all,

Replaced the engine in my 2.0tfsi leon cupra R as the old one exploded a whole in the block.

New Engine was tested on doner car and ran fine no warning lights at all when I plugged it in.. Had it running a little over 10 mins. , Stripped it off the doner car myself, left the engine sat for 4 days and swapped the engine over to the my car.

Oddly this engine now doesn’t want to turn at all in my cupra. Swapped starter motors over too thinking starter may be gonners,, had the starter off too but the engine won’t turn at all at the crankshaft bolt.

Confused as to how the engine could have seized from running perfectly fine in one car then after the transfer not running at all.  Obv can’t check codes as the cars never been started on my car.

Tried to bump start it, but nothing again, feel like the engines seized.
Any ideas anyone ?

Any tests I could do to confirm if engine is indeed seized before stripping it apart ?

Any help would be approximated. Open to try anything

Also just to add, the new engine was complete with the turbo and gearbox, so it was a straight swap. Didn’t touch the engine at all.

Did you split the engine box to fit a clutch or keep it as one lump?
Does it turn over by hand?

The engine was kept as one lump, engine gearbox with all ancillaries, which is the reason was mad confused..  :thinking: :thinking: Clearly we fudged something up with the install. It wasn’t turning by hand at all.

However it’s good news.  :drinking: And laughable. Learnt my lesson

Spent this evening removing the gearbox to inspect that maybe it could be gearbox related.

Wait for it …………


























Mixed up the bolts on the dogbone mount, so the longer bolt was jammed into the flywheel stopping the engine from turning.

Just dreading getting the gearbox in now, such a pain removing.

Turned the engine by hand and free as a daisy.

Lesson learnt …. Don’t mix up your bolts  :doh: :doh: :doh:

Is there a hole in the bell housing there or has the longer bolt punched a hole through?

I have to admit I nearly did a similar thing recently when I changed my cambelt and got one of the old engine mounting bolts mixed up with the front dog bone bolt. Luckily I stopped and checked part way through screwing it in as I thought something wasn't right.

I have to admit I nearly did a similar thing recently when I changed my cambelt and got one of the old engine mounting bolts mixed up with the front dog bone bolt. Luckily I stopped and checked part way through screwing it in as I thought something wasn't right.

Exactly that mate. We punched a hole through with the longer 16m bolt. Think it was the excitement of getting the new engine in haha lost track of bolt locations :grin: :grin:

Got the gearbox put together, and started. And she sounds beautiful again :jumpmove:

Many people have come a cropper on the door skin bolts for the same reason!  However when making that particular c0ck up, you get a lovely dent on the outside as a permanent reminder  :grin:  At least no one will see that little weight saving measure :grin:

I'm amazed the threads didn't rip out long before the bolt rammed its way through the casing  :surprised:

I find the gearbox comes out, goes in a lot easier with the subframe dropped, otherwise the sodding CV flange catches on just about everything.

I nearly did that a few weeks ago to my Audi TT mk1 as it carries a similar dog bone as the old bolt stripped out due to dog mount bush being excessively worn but luckily I realised the bolt would touch the flywheel and jam it. Glad you found the issue  :congrats:.
